Afro Samurai Hands-On Impressions
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:20 AM on July 26, 2008
Namco Bandai treated Comic-Con attendees to a playable — but all too brief — demo of Afro Samurai, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title based on the manga of the same name. The demo, which feels like an early, tutorial-style level, helps get the player up to speed on the fighting mechanics in a tight, enclosed portion of a Japanese village.
After a brief voiceover from character Ninja Ninja, voiced with super salty language by Samuel L. Jackson, Afro Samurai is set loose on a steady stream of sword wielding bad guys.
The attack system is rather straightforward, using the X and Y buttons for light hits and heavy hits respectively. Afro jumps with A and kicks with B. Blocking is performed with the right trigger, but it's the left trigger that makes the combat more interesting.
This puts Afro into in-focus mode, turning the game world black and white and slowing down the action. Instead of tapping the X and Y buttons to form strings of combos — we saw some quick combos pop up during loading screens — you'll hold down the X or Y button then release when you feel a rumble to perform a deadly horizontal or vertical slash. You'll see a gleaming white line streak across your target's body as you charge your slash. Connect, and you'll slice your target in half.
You'll get a rather grisly, yet comical view of your opponent's insides. There's no shortage of blood or gore, but it's implemented well.
At one point, we entered "Over Focus" mode, in which Afro sprinted from foe to foe, performing one-hit kills with far less effort. That particular sequence felt pre-scripted, as some two dozen bad guys descended from the rooftops just prior to our Over Focus attack.
Our demo ended soon after this batch was laid to waste. The end of the demo introduced us to Brother Six of The Empty Seven, giving Sam Jackson as Ninja Ninja another opportunity to drop some F-bombs.
Afro Samurai does action rather well, at least in the small taste we had. What it doesn't do as well is offer a perfect camera. We lost track of evil swordsmen and ninja, clicking the right analogue stick to recenter, more than a few times. It may have been due to the tight surroundings, but could have a big impact on how swordplay works out in the end.
The game's graphics are just stunning, capturing the look of the manga accurately, giving it a softer, pencil-sketch look that impresses on many levels. It may be worth the price of admission to see it in action, because it looks simply fantastic. The eye candy, which extends to the glorious killing of many enemies, will be a big draw for those unfamiliar with the property.

But is it so good it slapped the taste out of your mouth?
Never really got into the anime. Probably because it aired on Spike TV.

This really should've been a Wii title (Also should've been a mini-game compilation).
Waggle yes please!

OK, and this comparison has been made before, but doesn't this game look like it is just Namco's answer/rip-off of Ninja Gaiden? Not that that's a bad thing, just not very original if you ask me.
Then again, it is a two button "brawler" so how original could it get? Hopefully more so than I suspect.

I doubt I'll buy it (apprehension for licensed stuff) but I'm glad to hear its coming together well. Maybe they should take some looks at other TPB to get that camera down packed.

@ApertureScienceIntern: Yeah you should give it another shot. Just don't expect Citizen Kane, instead enjoy the amazing fight sequences.

I loved the Afro Samurai series, but I'm going to wait on this one.

Afro Samurai (The series) is visually really impressive. It's a really beautiful series. To be honest though the overall story hasn't really drawn me in too much. I know it's goal is arguably mostly to show an afro'ed Samurai kicking ass but for me personally what's going on around the action does still matter a bit, even if it's simple. It's still a pretty fun series though, it has fun character designs.
The game's visual style looks sort of interesting, though I hope the combat doesn't become too repetitive.

I hope they fix the camera, as it looks like it could be one of those rare good anime based games, I'm a sucker for samurai anime and games.

Afro Samurai is possibly the lamest IP out there. Wu Tang nerds will love it. The camera looks horrible, the fighting bland, the anime graphics have been done better elsewhere(valkerye chronicles,Ninja Storm). The only way that it could be worse would be to have a hero voiced by Samuel Jackson and a soundtrack by the RZA...oh wait...

@Michael McWhertor: Interesante. Hopefully all these Over Focus moments won't seem as scripted as you described and really use the music well. Too bad it was so loud, crazy comic book aficionados.

@Cpt-Jobert: The RZA tracks started playing when Afro went into Over Focus. Honestly, though, it was loud in the hall and I couldn't begin to tell you whether the music was original or not. I can ask!

@ApertureScienceIntern: Nah, you're not alone. Watched it a bit as well. It was pretty much just blood and gore, imo. All flash, no substance.

so this thing is set to play similar to god of war or ninja gaiden? i sure hope so. those kinds of brawlers are so satisfying when done right :) lets hope they address the camera so it's quality is closer to god of war than ninja gaiden...

@ApertureScienceIntern:
I'm not a huge manga, or anime fan either... But it stands out from most of the stuff I have seen... I'd say give it another shot. As for the game, I'll wait to pass judgement until I play a demo.

Oh ok, so Ninja Gaiden II catches flak for having a crappy camera, despite mapping the recentering butter to a trigger? We'll see how Afro Samurai does when everybody's clicking the stick like mad to reset the camera. Clicking them sticks has got to be one of the most unergonomic if not downright offensive button placements ever.

How did the music play into the combat? Are they original tunes for the game by the RZA or just his stuff from show?

Hmm....although Namco Bandai haven't really had much of a success with Anime/Manga themed games, this still looks good, i'll keep my eye on it.

@ApertureScienceIntern: Truth be told I'd never even seen the show prior to hearing about the game...and to date I've still only watched a single episode. I was just completely taken in by the visuals of the game as well as the prospect of some genuinely high production values spread across music, VO, and story.
And like Wild Homes, I'm a sucker for samurai games.

Namco Bandai has had many an anime/manga based game come through their doors, nearly all of which are rather passable... But I'm really, really rooting for this one to do well and perhaps even turn the cycle around so that we are to expect better developed titles in the future.

The camera problems are definitely worrisome, but this sounds pretty wonderful. I'm very, very keen to see more of this. I've got a weak spot for the samurai genre. Except for the Kengo games. Those were just bad.

I've been on pins and needles for this game ever since Play first covered it several months ago. Here's hoping Namco delivers a quality product across both platforms.

You said it- the art style is probably gonna get me to put money down on this game. If the game is technically ok then I'll enjoy it even if it's a bit shallow. The setting looks interesting, and it'll be new to me as I know NOTHING about Afro Samurai!

Peering into the future I see myself putting away the two buck chuck and breaking out the 40's me and the boys will be clanking steal and debowling our enemies at break neck speeds all colored in glorious detail. How can anyone not get excited at the prospect of Samuel L Jackson himself going head to head with Ron Pearlmen. Two of the greatest voices in the business! MUTHA #$*%#er this $%*$ 's gonna be real!
