Look, A Mirror's Edge Comic Preview
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on July 28, 2008
To whip up a little fervour amongst the faithful with regards to the upcoming comic adaptation of Mirror's Edge, free preview issues were handed out during Comic-Con. They were only seven pages long, but they still give us an idea of what to expect. And what can we expect? A visual style that matches the game fairly well and a sparsity of dialogue. Which could be a blessing or a curse.Guess we'll find out soon enough! More pics below.
Here's the Comic Con exclusive Mirror's Edge mini comic [Siliconera]

Hmmmmm. I was impressed with the first trailer released for this game in a sort of "Oh, nice tech demo" kind of way, but I'd hope there's some game beyond the basic running and jumping. Even here in this context they aren't really showing anything at all beyond the visual style. The more I see of it the harder I'm finding it to buy into the concept.

This looks like it could turn out really really good, or into a huge disappointment. I'm crossing my fingers for the best though.

Is it just me or should this be more a 3rd person game like Crackdown instead of a free running 1st person something.

That's a great little promo, that. Seems like an interesting world to play in - the city comes off as a character within itself. Kinda like Transmetropolitan, except where Transmet was dank and dirty this city is unnaturally clean and shiny.
Give us a damn demo to play already!

I like the whole idea of comic/game tie-ins, and Im really looking forward to the Dead Space comics. I didnt like the art or writing very much in this one, and while its not something I would buy on its own, I would pay the extra cost for a special edition of the game if it included it.

The art looks great. I'm going to actually read whatever little there is on my commute in, but the art looked pretty cool. I think she has an awesome look that translates well into 2D. The environments, too. It still looks like Mirror's Edge, even if you took her out.
@JakeDunn: It's not just you, but it IS just you and a few others who clearly aren't "getting" it.

it appears this comic was written by rhianna pratchett, daughter of terry pratchett, whom some of you may be aware of. bit of a strange project to take on.

The comic was okay, but am I the only one aprehensive about a game structured around jumping puzzles in 1st person?

Forgot to throw in my opinion. Several pages seem to be drawn alright but several don't. Kinda looks like half of the pages were drawn by somebody imitating the original.

lol, actually I guess I do get it, just find it sofar to be gimmicky. We're different because we'll do it 1st person thingey.
The tech demo showed a sorta linear path, as if it's a game with qte without the actual showing of what you need to press for the qte.
I'll just wait for a proper hands-on and not resort to namecalling thank you very much.

Very cool. I think the illustrator worked on the Heroes comics (season 1).
And wow. I didn't know Terry Pratchett's daughter wrote. She's certainly good at it.

@JakeDunn: Well they wanted to do something different. "It should be third person like Assassin's Creed" clearly goes against that.
I could easily say the Gears of War camera is annoying and that the game should be first person, but the action is made with third person in mind and the camera was a big part of the atmosphere in the game.

Page 3 is my favorite, where her perspective is wrong and it looks like she falling sideways, head first. Plus, she's about twice the size of the top floor of that building she just jumped off.

I think they should have gone with an artist that was good at drawing people running.... and buildings. It's strange that they went with neither.

If you quote try actually getting the game right.
I do like the city a bunch but no, my OPINION is that I'm not feeling it. So far, for me, the 1st person angle hasn't brought anything I LIKE to the table.

The only really big thing I see wrong is when the artist shows her running away from the reader (rear view), the arm and leg placement is wrong. It should be right arm forward, right leg back, and vice versa, etc.

I think the cover of it looked fantastic. The actual pages of it didn't seem particularly polished though.
I'm still rather interested in this game though. Am interested to see how they're going to make this work in the first-person.
Though I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind doubting something just because it doesn't look like something else... as that seems like what some of you seem to be doing. Much like how the gameplay in Gears was tailored to being 3rd person, I think Mirror's Edge will be tailored to work in the 1st. I believe it's far from being some "gimmick" they threw in just to be different for the sake of it. And just because a tech demo has shown the player following one path, it doesn't mean that's the only path.

why is she so fugly?
No, I'm not referring to her portrayal in the comic... I mean she's actually fugly on her own!

@JakeDunn: Plenty of other people have said Assassin's Creed on here, going with when I told you you weren't the only one. I wasn't specficially quoting you, but the idea quite a few people have been raising when they raise the point you make.
And that idea suggesting the game should be 3rd person goes against what the developers are specifically setting out to do. Insert Crackdown instead of Assassin's Creed. That doesn't change anything.
It's fine if it hasn't brought anything you like, and I'm not saying you have to like it. You asked if it should be third person. I told you no and why.

It's really bland as far as comics go.
I have friends in highschool who could make a better comic than that by themselves while this thing took three people.
I think I'll just wait for the game.

Why the hell is there so much talking?
I thought the beauty of the trailer, the beauty of the concept as I've seen so far is it's remarkable constraint and quietness. Covering up your beautiful vistas with boring overly wordy thought bubbles is a horrible way to treat comics. Then again, the artwork here was hardly expressive of the speed and vitality of her movements. All in all, not terrible good.

@CiciColino: The amount of shallowness some trolls go for is surprising. If we look for the standards of "Fugly" (fat + ugly) within Faith (see that, she has a name outside of ugly bitch). It is hard to find the faith fat when a picture shows that she is quite fit as is needed in order to preform various parkour moves. As for the ugly, in comparison to others who would be called ugly she would be a modern supermodel. There is a comparison of Faith and a supposed "Fugly" person below. So to put it in terms you should be familiar with "You got pwnd noob"

Despite the fact that I usually do, I actually don't really care about the story in this game. It allows for a nice art style and things, but it doesn't sound particularly interesting or innovative.
I'm most interested in seeing whether they've gotten parkour right. From the trailers it certainly seems that they've done a good job emulating it, and the first person view and lack of HUD do make it seem pretty immersive, but I'd like to reserve proper judgement until a demo out.
