Star Trek Online Officially Announced, First Screenshots
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:00 PM on July 28, 2008
That job listing was correct. City of Heroes developer Cryptic Studios is working on a Star Trek MMO, and its got the screenshots to prove it. Dubbed Star Trek Online, the game will be based on the Star Trek franchise. Says Cryptic chief creative officer Jack Emmert:
Star Trek was never about a single character, ship or even planet; Star Trek was always about an entire universe. And MMORPGs are uniquely suited to create such a thing and allow players to explore every inch.
First gameplay footage as well as more details about the game will be unveiled at the annual Star Trek convention in Las Vegas on Sunday, August 10th. Those unable to attend can check out the live webcast at the game's homepage.

Thank you Cryptic for having the balls to announce a project. This will finally pressure Bioware into revealing their KOTOR MMO and I can finally dance in the beautiful glow of knowing I told you so.

@dv8godd:
From what I recall of Perpetual's development, the MMO is slated to take place 20 years after the events of Nemesis.
I just hope Cardassians are a playable race.

@freakout: I TOTALLY agree!
It's all well and good to say "Star Trek was never about a single character, ship or even planet.." but, acutally, it WAS always about a single ship! jeezus.
That's why the shows were always named things like Enterprise, Voyager, Deep Space Nine...
The thing that made always made Star Trek great was getting to know the tight-knit group of people sequestered away on their SHIP. How they got to know each other, relied on each other, slept with an android, put on plays together, pretended to enjoy trombone recitals and had a good laugh or profound moment at the end of each episode.
PS> Why is it neccessary for all Sci-Fi games to feature gigantic mushrooms?

@Koztah: When the project was first annouced i remember them talking about implementing something like this, where a ship being successful was dependant on different people filling different roles (e.g shilds, weapons engines etc) but i haven't heard anything about it from the new developers.
Infact if i remember correctly, they said they were going to make the game more "casual" instead of the above method

I might play this. I really miss the Trek universe. I have no idea how it plays, or if it will even feel like Star Trek - but if it does, I will probably there.
Hoping for a new Trek series one of these days - and that it manages to not be terrible like Enterprise and actually FEEL like the Star Trek Universe.

@freakout:
I don't think I'd want every Tom, Dick and Harry running around with their own ship as though it were a WoW mount.
The only interesting way I see of having player-controlled ships would be if they were guild/faction based - kind of like Age of Conan guild cities or City of Heroes headquarters.
The size of the ship would depend on the size of the Guild (or "Crew", which would be more appropriate) - then the type of ship would be worked at by the guild members who would each fill a crew position depending on their character type.
So, if you make an engineering type you'd be in engineering, if you had a science type you'd be a science officer, medical to sickbay - and each ship would have different requirements of number of personnel and skill level for each station.

Hmm wonder if it'll play like phantasy star online. Away mission could work in that manner.. but what kind of loot an be expected?.. Federation is almost all uniform and the occasional dress down. I can see Klingon's having cool stuff. And I can't recall allot of variety in the weaponry.
But... the potential of excessive heavy breathing over voice chat means I won't be playing.

I agree with Jack Emmert, if they do it right this has more portential to work out nicely than a MMO based on a comic universe or one based on Star Wars. In those things the story is always based around a core cast of very important persons (the super heros/villains/the jedi/the leaders of the dark side) so its difficult to do a mmo cause everyone wants to be or work with one of those few important and known guys which yeah, can´t work out. In Star Trek they have so many different crews on different ships/stations/worlds know to the masses that i imagine one could way easier position the player in one of the many sub plot areas and still make him feel important.
Hope they don´t screw it up.

@DigiMish: You mean "Baywatch in Space"? Yeah... that was... um...
To it's credit, it seemed to be something of a "reboot" in itself. But it just didn't have the right realism in the right places. Two steps forward, two steps backward.
It didn't change that it was campy, just changed the "ways" in which it was campy.
I still watched them all and enjoyed them for what they were... but... could have been lots better.
@shaunomacx: I liked them all, for what they were.
Of course, so much entertainment is only appreciable in it's own particular "time and place". Some things, like Shakespeare's video, just don't age all that well. :)

The grinding is probably pretty rough... at least in the beginning you're always going to be that unnamed crew member guy who gets killed after beaming down to the planet. It's not until you get enough levels to have your name in the credits that you have a chance of not getting killed.

@shaunomacx: And here I was just thinking... "I hope it's not the campy OLD trek... i hope it reboots like the upcoming movie, pisses off all the fans, and drops a lot of the twisted core material... no red shirts, please"
After so many decades, I'm just completely burnt out on what Star Trek "was". I still like it... but I just can't see paying attention to new material that heads down the same path.
Of course, I've only seen every episode, own all the movies and half the series' on DVD... but I'm not a "true" fan because I don't have a collection of bat'leth or speak Klingon fluently. :)
But a universe "reboot" of sorts, like those of BSG, Doctor Who, James Bond, and the upcoming movie... I could do that.
I'm not against the old material... just a feeling that new material is more interesting and engaging when re-envisioned with a more modern angle on how we perceive the world, rather than looking at the world through 20-30 year-old glasses.
But that's probably just me.

Me, I want an Intrepid or Defiant-class ship. Small, fast, manouverable. I want to take it out, exploring strange new worlds and turning rival alien tin cans into scrap. I want to be able to command "ALL POWER TO WEAPONS!"

Hmm, I don't like the idea of any MMO conventions, especially some of the more tedious ones getting in the way of the gameplay, such as go here mine 10 of these or kill 5 of those. If I can have intriguing missions like get my physical resemblance changed from a human to look like a Cardassian so I can infiltrate the military as a spy, that involved sneaking in via a prototype ship that can evade detection and meeting up with an informer deep inside Cardassian space, then getting briefed and fooling all the people there for a while before getting my cover blown, and finally hijacking a ship and escaping by the skin of my pants, then hunting down and killing the informer that betrayed me - count me in! (takes a deep breath!). But it sounds like that's gonna be more of an Oblivion style sandbox single player game.
Or failing that, let me be Q.

@everybest: Plus that bowling balls found in space are actually eggs. Poor Horta was only protecting its eggs. :(
@Lightbunny: I'm not so worried about the "timeline" being the "reboot"... so much as the approach to and style of storytelling. It could take place at any time in the universe timeline... I just would like to see them hit a kill switch on the tired formulaic style rut that the series ran into, if that makes sense.
Like how the original BSG was made for kids... but the new one assumes that we've all grown up a bit and can talk about big people things now.
I hate sci fi that panders to me like I was 9 years old... or when it's idea of "growing up" is simply to have more "'splodey things".
I want more "maturity" from the universe and less "20 minutes of babble about fake technology", basically.

@rainofwalrus: Aw. (makes disappointed face) Then again, the only games that've ever really come close to getting Trek-style space battles right was Star Trek: Legacy, but it was too watered-down and arcade-y.
God it was beautiful though. The ship models were fantastic. And it let me live out all those childhood fantasies of "What if Kirk's Enterprise and Picard's Enterprise were to fight?" (Although my fantasies went on a bit longer than the 30 seconds or so it takes the Ent-E to turn the Ent-A into atoms...)
@Koztah: I'd be happy for them to make you work for it - work really hard, even - but excising the ship element from the game completely is definitely not tthe answer for a Star Trek game, methinks.
Love the idea of letting other players take the various roles, though... ideally, you could also command a ship with AI players, but they wouldn't be half as clever and you wouldn't get as many bonuses. I suppose high-level players could be the captains, and you have to serve x amount of time as a crew member before you get to sit in the big chair.
@trigger2: Damn straight! Having your own ship would give you a deeper connection to the game, I reckon. After all, bonding with your ship is a big thing in Trek. It's vitally important, so that you feel really down when you have to initiate self-destruct in order to take the bad guys down with you. ;)

How are they going to make doing things with your humanoid avatar fit the MMO game style and still be true to the background material? It won't make sense shooting something 20 times with a Kill-setting phaser, nor will it make sense for Federation personnel to be running around killing things in the first place. And what about gear? Most MMO's are built around keeping you attached to the game by making you grind endlessly for the gear necessary to successful progression, and the Fed fleet is a military organization that issues all the equipment you need. I'd like to see a move away from item grinding, and Star Trek is an innovative setting to attempt that in, but given the scent of cash-in that the upcoming movie gives this project, I can't say I'm convinced that innovation is something they'd be aiming for. EVE online has done a great job making a successful ship-based MMO so I'm not too concerned about the space aspect, but the last game to try and integrate space combat with a personalized avatar to go planetside, Star Wars online, bombed horribly.
Then there's the question of scale. The galaxy is huge, and the distances between Romulus, Earth, Cronus and Vulcan, vast. They obviously aren't going to make it take weeks to get from one world to the next, nor will they make planets of any realistic size. I'd love to be able to interact in a fully realized Trekverse, but there's so much that can be messed up here that I'm more worried than excited :/
