Up To Fable 6 Planned (Molyneux Also Keen To Make Sports Game)
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:00 PM on July 29, 2008
Lionshead head Peter Molyneux is best know for Populous and Black & White. And while he and his team are hard at work on the upcoming Fable 2, Molyneux divulges that the studio has more Fable games planned — Fable 3, Fable 4 and Fable 5, actually. What's more, Molyneux confesses his desire to work on a sports game of all things:
One day I really should do a sports game, just because it really seems such a genre which is just locked in stone. We know how we do sports games. That is a real challenge to me. Same with things like driving games. What I want is for a game I do next is a really big challenge.
Oh man, Peter Molyneux hyping a sports game. Can you imagine?

I'm all for sequels to Fable continuing for as long as possible. I hope Fable keeps coming out a la Zelda. There's no reason they can't keep improving on that series and extending its story into the future, past, whatever.

Just think, by the time we get to Fable 6, Molyneux might just about be able to deliver all the features he promised in Fable 1! Oh joyous days!
@ 'The Whaleman' - he doesn't need us to hype his games, he does a wonderful job of that all by himself every time he opens his mouth.

Fable 6... the player has a dog, the dog has fleas, the fleas have jobs, and the player really forms an emotional connection with each and every one of them.
Oh yea, you can kick the evil fleas down wells.

Let's give the man one more chance. After all, Fable 2 is the first Lionhead game after they were bought out by Microsoft Game Studios. I worked there (at MSG) when that went down, and the general consensus was that they'd be given as much time and money as they needed under that arrangement. The original Fable was published by MSG and devleoped by a then third-party Lionhead and by all accounts was rushed to market. Hopefully they learned their lesson and will let him follow his crazy ass visions to some sort of gaming nirvana. Or it could suck.
"So Soccer Hero is really amazing. You can level up your feet for increased kicking power by practicing with your dog and each individual blade of grass on the field grows seperately, so you can actually watch the grass grow if you want. It's going to revolutionize grass growing technology as we know it."

@AlbenoEpiX: 5 additional? Since they have Fable 2 finished, would that not mean 4 additional?
@The Whaleman: I'm with you. He has some great ideas, and I find that as long as he delivers on half his promises, his games tend to be a lot of fun.

I still don't understand all the Molyneux hate... But then I've never hyped up any of his games to unreal proportions before they were released either... instead I've found his games incredibly enjoying and some of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.
And while he might have talked about features that had to be cut in the final game, it seems like a lot of you build up an image of the perfect game every time and then somehow get something else than you were expecting. I personally doubt there is a perfect game, and as long as I'm entertained, I'm happy... and Lionhead's games have given me some of the greatest entertainment ever... I guess I'm easily pleased or something.

Games Molyneux promised me and has failed to deliver:
Black and White series, to a possible five iterations.
Dungeon Keeper 3.
Another Populous game.
You'll have to forgive me if I've got my cynicism set high

Hey Peter,
You're off your rocker. There's already an over-promised, over-hyped sports game. Madden, but could you add a context sensitive one button mode to the game?
I'm just teasing. Don't make a sports game.

So they've effectively confirmed 5 additional sequels? Getting a bit ahead of themselves aren't they?
I'd also question the sensibility of announcing something like this, as it potentially kills a lot of the buzz inherent with revealing a franchise sequel. People will see Fable 4 and they will be all "meh, we knew that was coming..." as opposed to "OMFG ARE U SERIUZ!? GIMMIE GIMMIE!"

We'll see if Fable 2 is any good before I make a declaration about wanting another one. Honestly I thought the first one was mediocre at best. I was a harbinger of death with four hours. Beef myself up -> slow time -> hit guy 4 times -> game over.

@The Whaleman: It's not hate, it's disappointment. It's getting your hopes up only to have them dashed against the jagged rocky coast of despair. Fans fault? Sure. Molyneux's fault? That too.
Molyneux and Lionhead are great developers. Fable was fun, Black & White was fantastic, and I have no doubt anything he does will be no less than totally enjoyable.
But the guy just needs to keep the lid on what he's doing instead of telling fans what to expect, and never coming close to meeting those expectations.
Peter, just do your thing, keep your mouth shut, and we'll all praise you for the genius you are in the end. Trust me.

Also in the news, Peter Molyneux shares his plans for new rules of physics. Stay tuned as he one-ups God and discusses the way different rules of gravity and relativity will affect lifeforms, and the deep interactions possible with "smell-based" technology. Also in the next game: create new colors that do not yet exist.

@Shiryu: Ahh those were the days... Back wen bullfrog was in its prime, and games like theme hospital, and my favourite PC game of all time, dungeon keeper were all the hype.
Show some love! Rather than wasting time developing a gaming franchise tht will eventually run its course with what can be done before its turned into an MMO, how about a sequel to Popopulous (Think thts how its spelt, cant b arsed checking), or expanding on the Dungeon Keeper III teaser, and releasing something that can compete on the PC gaming market and do aswell as i expect Blizzards franchises to do.

I apologize for my pants effort to be funny, but in all seriousness hope some sort of backwards compatibility with Fable 2 is implemented.
Something like your new character in 3 is the great great grandson/daughter of your character from 2, and your ancestors actions have had long lasting effects in your world
Then Fable 3 could be something really really special...

Molyneux's a guy in the industry that unquestionably loves his job, and is always very clearly, genuinely excited about this work. I wish there were more of him.
Further, I think its silly to take "plans" as "promises". I can get the dissappointment when you don't see things that were talked about in a game. But I think, somewhere down the road, you've just got to accept a game for what it is, and sidestep the hype.
Its not easy, but i think we all end up happier gamers for it :)

@torgojones: They got a lil further than that, I think Strangers Wrath was the 3rd in the quintology. They also did 2 Abe games, which wasnt initially intended (they were going to do 5 games, each about a different character I beleive).
Didnt the company go down the pan though? Tis not so much a broken promise in that case... molyneux just talks too much... an idea pops into his head and he blurts it out the next time theres a microphone stuck in front of his face, regardless of how feasable the idea is and how likely it is to happen. =P

@joej626:
I was just thinking that! Where's Black & White 3-5!? ...but saying that with how much he dumbed down the creature AI in B&W 2 I'm not sure if I want 3, 4 n 5... If he didnt deliver there then I doubt he will with Fable.
To be honest I completely forgot Populous was one of his games. I loved populous: the begining, but didnt expect a sequel.
As for Dungeon Keeper 3, I still cry my self to sleep at night over the end of that series! We even had a frikken teaser trailer at the end of DK2! And since EA own bullfrog and the DK IP, I seriously doubt there'll ever be a true sequel, the best we can hope for a spiritual successor but even that seems unlikely.
Mr Molyneux... you broke my heart...
