Exclusive Lego Universe Video Offers First Game Glimpse
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 2:20 AM on July 30, 2008
Lego Universe developer NetDevil has given us an exclusive peek into Lego Universe, the massive multiplayer online game where you can use bricks to collaboratively "build in real time", having adventures through maps that span across all Lego themes: from Space to City to Pirates to Ninjas to Underwater, everything will be in there. After creating the game tools, the game is now in the world design stage, where advanced Lego users are helping NetDevil to create the actual worlds.
This video was recorded in NetDevil's second Lego Universe Project event. According to Scott Brown, NetDevil's president, in the first LUP event they asked these Lego users to give them an idea of what the game should be like, which of course resulted in them building hundreds of actual Lego models of monsters, places, and all kinds of devices, machinery, and vehicles.
After that session, NetDevil started to program the software tools and the models needed to design Lego Universe terrains and structures. Now, in the second LUP event, they have trained those Lego people on the tools themselves, which they are using to create the virtual worlds. Apparently, NetDevil is very impressed by how fast these people--who in their day jobs are mostly engineers--got into the tools after just a three-hour class. Hopefuly that means things are progressing fast and we will see this game--which seems to have great potential--sooner than later.

You're going to see giant LEGO cocks. Entire forests of them. And then a great many accounts will be banned. It's the sad truth that we all must face.

@Raziel66: Accidentally hit enter. SanjiX, it's Lego. Would you not sell your soul to play with Lego's online? This could be awesome! (Can't watch the video at work so that statement is subject to change depending on the suckiness of said video).

Jesus? What're you Gizmodo folk doing here? :-P
Anyway, it looks pretty neat. I'm a bit worried that it might end up being too much if it took some of these guys a three-and-a-half hour long class to just begin using all the features and other who've trained on it "for over a year". Still, with something this expansive, it looks to have some solid potential.

@cinderx: That's pretty much what he said right in the video. He even name-checks Indiana Jones. I suspect you'll see Batman and Harry Potter and other similar licenses, as well.

The video does seem a little cut off. Looks really cool but who will actually play it? :/
I wonder if they'll have themes from all the licensed sets Lego has put out over the years like Star Wars, Batman, Indiana Jones and um... Bob the Builder.

I know what you're getting at, and I agree 100%. I remember building with the old city legos. Oh man was that shit fun, but lego's taken a turn for the worse since then.
Just because I don't like the actual toy doesn't mean I can't like the game though, this looks awesome.

This makes me want Lego blocks with RFID chips built into them and some sort of scanner that can scan to find out what type and color of brick it's looking at from the data embedded in the chip, and based off of the signal strengths, directions, and angles of each RFID chip, figure out what I built in reality and put it into the game. And by "I" I mean people who are actually good at making Lego models.

I'm just hoping the game will be fun. Seriously, I'm 25 and I still can spend hours upon hours building with Lego. My fiance' doesn't see the attraction, but I think they are a great way to pass the time. Here's hoping that this game will be a greater than any other MMO ever, because Lego f'ing rocks and I need a new time sink!

While it is true that the Exo-Force line is basically Lego's take on Anime with giant robots, your comment really makes no sense whatsoever.
Hell, I'm 17 and I buy Lego sets. They have got to be the best purchases I've ever made. I can do whatever I want with them if I don't like what's already built. Throw that into game form and I'd die a happy man.

hmm... what about their licenced lego stuff like star wars, batman etc. Sure would suck if they left the star wars part out, due to the fact that no even liked lego games nor did they sell good (except lego racers) until lego star wars the video game. Hope they dont forget that.

I can't wait for this one. I don't play MMOs because most of them are a little too much "plus five ogre axe paladin orc" type BS, but THIS, I think I could get into. First thing I'm gonna to is build the black seas barracuda, then me and captain redbeard are gonna go trash some of those do-gooder town people! Oh yeah! Pirate system rocks!

I like this idea! As long as I can create my own YF-23 out of Lego like the one sitting on my desk, then I'm all for it! Hopefully they'll have all the parts that I need to build one.... >.> Also would be nice if I could make a makeshift Mechwarrior again also.
I also wonder if we can play the "Lego ramming" game like when I played with them as a kid. XD Made cars with battering rams on them and pushed them at full speed, then see which vehicle gets destroyed after several rams. ;P
