Resident Evil And Devil May Cry Comics On The Way
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:20 AM on July 30, 2008
As I've said before, DC's WildStorm imprint is slowly becoming THE video game comic book label of choice. They've got World of Warcraft (an excellent series btw), Gears of War, the recently announced Mirror's Edge, and now they're adding two of Capcom's hottest properties to the list. That's right, Resident Evil and Devil May Cry are the latest video game properties to get the WildStorm treatment, though the company has already delved into the Resident Evil mythos in the past.
"We're ecstatic that Resident Evil is returning to WildStorm, where we have already established deep roots into the mythos of this world," said Hank Kanalz, Vice President/General Manager for WildStorm. "We can't wait to continue, and bring a freshness and excitement to the property to match the amazing things they are doing with the game."
Details on creative teams, launch months, and storylines are still forthcoming. This needs to stop. As a recovering weekly comic book addict, combining comics and video games makes it far too easy for me to justify those weekly comic shop visits. Have mercy!
DC COMICS AND CAPCOM® ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR RESIDENT EVIL®, AND DEVIL MAY CRY® COMIC BOOK SERIES
SAN MATEO, Calif. -- Jul 25, 2008 — DC Comics, the largest English-language publisher of comic books in the world, and Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced plans to join forces to create a comic book series based on Capcom's popular gaming properties Resident Evil® and Devil May Cry®.
"Capcom is thrilled to be partnering with DC," said Germaine Gioia, Senior Vice President of Licensing for Capcom Entertainment, Inc. "Comics are a critical component in Capcom's merchandising strategy for our most cherished franchises, as they target the same discerning, loyal fans that care most about these established brands. DC's undisputed development and distribution strength within the comic industry make them an ideal partner to further expand two of our most successful and sophisticated gaming properties."
Details on the new series, including creative team and launch month, will be announced at a later date. Both titles will be published by DC Comics' WildStorm imprint.
The Resident Evil series of video games has sold over 34 million units since the original game was released in 1996, as well as spawned a multi-million dollar trilogy of films from Sony Pictures. Resident Evil® 5 will revolutionize the Resident Evil series, just as Resident Evil® 4 did. To coincide with the Resident Evil comic book is the latest installment in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil 5, which unveils a world where the biohazard threat has not ended: Just when it seemed the menace of Resident Evil was destroyed, a new terror appears in Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil's returning hero, Chris Redfield, has followed the path of the evil around the globe, and after joining a new organisation, heads to Africa, where the latest threat is transforming people and animals into mindless, bloodthirsty creatures. Joined by a new partner, Sheva Alomar, the duo must work together to unravel the truth behind the evil menace.
The latest in the Devil May Cry series, Devil May Cry® 4 is already a bonafide hit in the console world, having shipped over 2 million units worldwide since its release in North America in February. Devil May Cry 4 immerses gamers in a gothic supernatural world, where a new protagonist clashes with a familiar hero. As the new leading man, Nero, players will unleash incredible attacks and non-stop combos using a unique new gameplay mechanic: the powerful "Devil Bringer" on his right arm.
"Dante, Nero and the world of DEVIL MAY CRY is a perfect fit for the sensibilities of our studio," Kanalz said. "We have such terrific inspiration from the anime and games and we intend on meeting the exceptionally high standard of quality that has been set for this."

Thanks for the tips @drivebyinsult. I just wish there was some way, like with a magazine or any other buyable product, I could say "look, I know I want to buy this, let me either give you the money up front or have you send me a reminder before it is released. I do not want to know about the two hundred other titles you carry; I just want to get the Resident Evil comic books, that's it."
I'm definitely not interested in trade or resale value; I just find it very painful to buy compared to other products!

whooo! hopefully unlike the last DMC comic, this one will come out in a timely fashion (though in the other ones defense, painting every panel did lead to an amazing looking book)

No Fahey! Don't recover from comic book addiction! Give in fully! Especially with Marvel's "War of the Kings" on its way! C'mon Vulcan Summers vs. Black Bolt. 'Nuff said. Plus it'll include Nova, Havok, and greatest of all Rocket Raccoon! You can't say no to that...

@v12qborony:
I found Udon's Street Fighter series to be really good. Even better was their miniseries Street Fighter Legends: Sakura. Other than that I don't read any other video game related comics b/c I'm usually wary of any cross-medium tie-ins..
@beeporama (brian.j.parker):
Anything Joss Whedon writes is pretty awesome. His run on Astonishing X-Men was really good according to my bro, and now he's got his Buffy series that continues from where show left off.
You can find when each issue of a given series is released from any given publisher's website, or for a complete list for any given week, check out Diamond Comics Distributors' site: [previewsworld.com]
They have new releases listed by publisher. If you want to get first edition printings of any given comic, you really have to get to the comic store the Wednesday when it comes out, esp. if it's a popular title. Otherwise you may as well just wait for the collected trade paper backs... which have no collector's value, but if you just want to read the stories and save some $$, it's a good way to go.
I have some series that I get every week, some that I wait for trades. There is only one I get both: Fables. Thanks you James Jean.

I've recently started getting interested in comic books because of the video game tie-ins, and wanting to pick up some of the Joss Whedon and Chuck related books. I just wish they'd take a clue from our culture, where you're bombarded with information over and over. If I want to find a comic book, it's a tough hunt to even find a release date, and then you suddenly find out it's sold out two days after release and you'll have to wait to buy the Loser Shmuck Second Print Run Cover. Then you find out there are three variant covers and multiple collections planned so if you try to buy from Amazon you have no idea what will actually arrive in your mailbox.
Ugh, can't I just send you some money, and have you send me the comic books when they're ready, or something?

Y'know, the Devil may also not cry?
Without the fun gameplay, most of those franchises have stories that are written so poorly that I've seen pornos with better plots.
Couple that with an a butchering of the English language, post translation, and you get such lovely jewels as "Devil May Cry." WTF were the Japanese writers thinking when they came up with that one?
"Let's plunder character names from an old European book and because we're too lazy to read it, we can make up our shit and sell it back to the Baka Gaijin."
What's next? "Angels Have a Slight Possibility to Laugh?"

they should save some trees and deliver them digitally, making them with that slight animation technique that worked excellent for those metal gear stories - it would be much more interesting, and the young whipper-snappers can watch them on their ipods - its a win-win situation

Sweet stuff Resident Evil as a comic. I wonder what the style of the comic will look like. I hope more of the dark gritty style like some graphic comics. Now RE as that would be cool.

@Xideo: That picture is not for the upcoming series. That's from an adaptation of the first game done by the defunct-then-revived Dreamwave Productions. The art was superb, but not very exciting. Just a retrace through the game that started it all. They also had a lot of troubles with releasing issues in a timely manner. It was more like a Whenever-we-feel-like-it company back then(not sure about now) and they were closed down before the final issue of the DMC series was released, along with the first issues of a Killzone comic(This was before people learned it was far from being a halo killer) and a Megaman comic. Wildstorm should do nicely though. They have the tendency to release some good quality stuff.

I bought the three devil may cry comics that came out from ... *looks at comics* DW comics and had the 4th and final one pre ordered along with the killzone comics they were going to release. Then the company folded and I never got the 4th one. Amazing!

Yeah, it looks like a good move. But a couple issues in and watch them change the artist or writer. For someone way more crap. Or miss deadlines that turn into flatlines.
That's how it usually pans out in the 'superhero' part of the industry. And that's one of the main reasons almost no one is reading comic books anymore.
Another one is 'cause everyone's gaming. And now they are pumping out game-related comics. How's that for irony?

The Resident Evil Comic Magazine was pretty good. Don't bother trying to fit where it belongs in the videogame series. It was good for what it is. Like, reading Umbrella's take of Tales from the Crypt but more Bio-Organic Weapons and T/G-Viruses.
Wildstorm's RE: Fire & Ice is a different story. Didn't like it all.
