Twisted Metal Arcade Game Was Once Planned
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 7:40 AM on July 30, 2008
Buried within the latest blog update from God of War and Twisted Metal producer David Jaffe is mention that at one point, someone, somewhere thought a Twisted Metal arcade game was a good idea and that there were hazy plans for Midway and Sony to collaborate on such a product. While that obviously never bore fruit — and more than likely never, ever will — to know that vehicular combat could have come to a Midway arcade cabinet is morbidly fascinating.
Jaffe writes that he met with Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon way back in the mid-nineties to discuss such a venture, but that "nothing - clearly - ever came of it".
Of course, this was when arcades were still viable and Twisted Metal was but a fledgling series. They were also the heady days of Cruis'n World and War Gods, two indicators that it was probably best for all involved that Twisted Metal Arcade never saw the light of day.
Still, we'd love to have a peek into the alternate universe where it did. If only for the laughs!

>: @Murderdolls: you always seem to be dis-satisfied with your system. I mean that's understandable since I have friends not satisfied with the systems they own. I have one really not satisfied with thier wii. But instead of complaining like you usually do (which leads me to believe that you may not even have the system), why don't you just sell it.

For those of you don't know (or too young to know), arcades were this magical place you would play video games with other sweaty, smelly, and socially inept people.
I loved it.
Reason being that the best hardware came in arcade machines. So in order to play the latest and greatest, you would have to go to an arcade.
Roughly around the late 90's, arcades mainly because the internet was provding another place for sweaty, smelly, and socially inept players to congrigate and play against each other. That and console/PC technology surpased the the arcades and came out fast enough to beat them.
Arcades used to be everywhere. My mall growing up had two of them. Now? Arcades pander to niche players. The only games you see are rythem games and fighting games imported from Japan.
Thats all you'll ever see. Why would anybody pay 50 cents a game when they can buy the game and play it to their heart's content at home?
As for Twisted Metal? Could of been fun.

@Capp: Not sure if TM would come out for Live though. Did Jaffe ever say anything about a multiplatform TM?
@Murderdolls: you could always sell it. If there's one thing the generation has taught me, is that no one has to suffer from buyer's remorse (regardless of how ridiculous, misinformed, ignorant or retarded the reasoning for said remorse). Just sell it.

Twisted Metal needs to be released for the newer systems for sure. the original games were so much fun to play multiplayer. They need to make it Live and PSN compatible though so we could have like 16 player carnage matches. And bring back some of the classic stages too.
I'd get it.

@excaliburps: it's funny, I have a couple of friends that swear WarGods was a great game that people didn't give a chance.
IMO It sucked so bad it made it on my top 10 worst fighting games ever made.
anyways, I wouldn't mind a new TM. I think it should be a PSN title though. I've grown spoiled running games from the HDD. Besides it would go well with Warhawk

Midway? Odd. SCEI's relations with Namco under Nakamura was VERY tight knit that all arcade hardware that Namco had from 1994 and onward was PS based.
Twisted Metal as it was could've been reworked by Jaffe and released on System 11.

I think if a Twisted Metal was made for the PS3, the online portion would be fun. I loved Twisted Metal on the PSone...

Why aren't arcades alive anymore? There's so much potential! Just look at BlazBlue, SoulCalibur IV, Street Fighter IV, BattleFantasia, KoF XII, Tekken 6, etc.
Perhaps Twisted Metal was the game that would have kept arcades alive in America...
Damn you David Jaffe!!!!!

@Koztah: Ah War Gods! I tried playing that before...Didn't know how to make heads or tails of it! Mind you I was a pretty adequate MK and SF player then.
Wasn't there supposed to be some sort of TM3 for the PS3 announcement? If not, what's Sweet Tooth been doing all these years?

They teased TM for PS3 last year...and nothing at E3 this year. How long we gonna have to wait? Might be the one thing that can make me buy a PS3.

Well, in some ways it could've been fun. Maybe a one on one car combat game, each player in one of their own car thingies like the arcade racing games, and so on.

Twisted Metal Arcade game would be awesome, except... there is not too many arcades around anymore which sucks. Used to have 2 arcades in my city, now we have, 0.

An obvious reason why Arcades are not popular anymore, or as popular would be due to that nearly everyone has or could get access to home consoles, the arcades which we adored as children now reside as smaller versions that connect to the television, though I still miss the arcades, definitely alot of fun times held in them.

Man, I loved going to the arcade as a kid. That truly was the place to see all the great games long before they ever hit a console. Arcades now suck. Rhythm games, a few shooters, and not much else. Always dead and games cost a buck just to play.
I remember every time a new Mortal Kombat would arrive, you could stand in line for an hour to pay your quarter and get your ass handed to you by some Japanese teenager who was on a winning streak of 40-0. I always thought that japan mailed them the moves/fatalities list when the games shipped because you'd see these kids pulling off hidden fatalities and super moves the day it came out. lol
We had an arcade in my town after I made it to highschool called "the buffalo nickel". It cost 2 bucks to get in and every game was a nickel. They had all the classics in 1 area and they were free to play, and all the new games were in the main area and were a nickel, maybe a dime tops with a nickel for continues. Definitely made games like House of the Dead beatable.
I miss those days sometimes. Makes me feel old though.
