Will We See The Ghostbusters Game In 2009?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 1:00 PM on July 31, 2008
So Activision doesn't want to publish Ghostbuster: The Videogame (silly, Activision). We've heard that the game isn't cancelled, but what exactly does that mean? Is it even coming out or will it just languish? According to Variety, Sony Pictures, who owns the rights to Ghostbuters and who licenced the IP to Vivendi last year, is working Vivendi "to evaluate various options surrounding the release of the 'Ghostbusters' video game". What's more, Sony adds:
This has presented [Sony Pictures Consumer Products] with an opportunity to reevaluate the game release marketing strategy to potentially coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original film in '09.
So if the game's not out until 2009, who's going to publish? One thing that is for sure is another year in develop should only help not hurt this game.
Ghostbusters game delayed to 2009, but who's publishing it? [The Cut Scene]

Can u see whats going to happen, this will end up being a sony exclusive!!
i dont own a ps3 (yet), im pro x360, but been a gamer for many years, and this is just something sony needs all to themselves, to help push system sales.

@Ashkihyena: Granted, I could see why Sony would want to wait till next year for the 25th anniversary. I'm sure them releasing Blue-Ray would help the sales of the game as well.
Even though, if they released it beforehand, it'd still sell.

After which they throw out and rebuild a lot of new assets.
At which point enough time passes while building new assets that they may as well upgrade their engine again.

Maybe this means that one night in the near future, Michael Emerson will appear in a black trenchcoat outside of Rick Moranis' house telling him that "You ALL have to go back. This is the way it has to be, Rick. It's the only way."

As for the reason activision didn't want any part of this, word is that a single person involved with the movie has a 50%-of-the-profits clause in the ghostbuster game contract.
That's just not good business sense.

Well being Sony's IP I'd say they should publish it if all else fails, even though the 360 and Wii versions are so far into development. Imagine, a Sony game going to another console...
But someone will pick up this game, with nearly every console getting a version, and being a big title, it's guarenteed to sell.

I don't buy that for a second. 50% of all profits to 1 man???? No way. Bill Murray (if it's him which is most likely) is not worth that. No single person is. The only person I see getting that much profit from an IP is George Lucas and I doubt even he gets that much from Star Wars games.

From what I saw of the game during the demo at Comic-Con, the game definitely could use more polish. It's currently difficult in areas to figure out what to do next, namely when it comes to using the ghost gps device and trapping ghosts.
The other thing though, is that the game feels extremely like it's on rails. You're not able to travel through a building freely and pick up clues to eventually find where the ghosts are and then the big boss ghost. You're on a very much set path on the straight and narrow.

You have to wonder if Sony will step in to finish the game. Seeing as it is being made for the PS3, PS2 and a PSP version I could see Sony paying to finish the game. But at the same time it is sad news if you do not own one of those systems. Also does this mean there will be a 25 aniversery version of Ghostbusters on DVD.

@MisterMcThursday: Nope, Murray's doing voice work just like the other three guys are, so he's pretty much involved, but I don't think that he'd be getting no 50% of the game's profits, that'd be just ludcrious, and I don't think the game would've even gotten off the ground.
Well, from what I've seen so far, the game looks pretty damn good, I mean, here you have the two orginial writers doing a 480 page script, all 4 guys (plus Annie Potts and William Atherton) doing voice work, graphics that look quite impressive, the score, and of course, the theme song, I don't think it could go wrong.

I thought Murray wasnt involved with the game. I dont think (although I certainly dont know) that Murray gets future royalties off of the movie since it was early in his career. He wasnt really a star before the movie came out imo I doubt he could command that type of contract negotiation.
Ash I think you have a point. The name alone could sell a few 100K copies most likely. But a messed up game by an unproven publisher could look bad for Activision since they have been so big-time lately.

Thought they would've released this with the new Real Ghostbusters complete DVD set that Time Life is coming out with in a couple months. The only fear I have is oversaturation of the brand name at one time.
This was the only game I was actually looking forward to getting before the end of the year. And more development time can also mean the game ends up being less like an epic and more like "Hancock".

What a cluster fuck this is turning out to be. If the game was actually any good (and we're talking a tarted-up over-the-shoulder 3rd person shooter here so there's plenty of existing work to emulate) it would sell like hot cakes. The amount of interest it's generated on Kotaku alone is a good indication of the level of interest. I would be seriously surprised if it did not sell well (again, caveat is that the game is actually fun to play).
How could NOT releasing it be a good decision?

I don't know why this is so hard for Sony Pictures to find a publisher for a video game. One of the largest game publishers in the biz is a part of the same freakin company! I suppose that if it must go multiplatform then you have a different story. If this game is good and no one else wants it, SCE should step in and make it an exclususive rather than just letting it die.
crashlanding
