Age Of Conan Buddy Codes Are Go
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:20 AM on July 25, 2008
Just received an email this morning from Funcom to let me know that the 7-day Age of Conan buddy codes that shipped with the collector's edition of the game are now ready to be passed out among your friends in a suitably lordly fashion. Unlike most MMORPGs, where friend codes tend to be active from launch, Funcom wanted to give players sufficient time to get acclimated to the game before flooding the servers with people that didn't care enough to buy it. It might seem to the outsider that the company was waiting until the game was in a more presentable state, but that's just crazy talk.
Funcom suggests you allow your friend to use your game DVDs, as that not only allows you to spend quality time together, but also helps them avoid the $US 2.99 charge they'll incur from downloading the trial client (though they do get an extra 3 days to make up for the cost).

Just a heads up from someone who's played since launch: don't. It's a damn mess and the new PvP patch actually punishes (yes I mean penalize) you for PvPing other players and if you dare kill a player who is more then 3 levels below you, you will lose items to whoever kills you next. I've canceled and I don't know many that aren't canceling.

AoC...
It was a good game, but it just wasn't addicting enough. I kept finding myself saying "Ah, I don't wanna play it right now. I'll play tomorrow".
Plus, months afterwards, and their patches still consis of minor tweaks and fixes.
Gaudager might be a charismatic guy, but he sure is one hell of a liar.
"Oh, we have all these great changes coming up within the next few patches! And PvP system is coming by the end of June!"
A month later:
"Oh, we have all this great stuff coming in! I know we said it was coming earlier, but hang in there! PvP is coming in by the end of August!"
I feel kinda bad for the devs. From what I've heard and seen, they are really into the game, and want AoC to succeed, but they seem to be lead by people who don't know how to run an MMO worth a damn.
I mean, it's almost August, and no content has been added. Patches have consisted solely of class tweaks and minor bug fixes, almost ignoring major issues completely (well, aside from Gaudager telling us they're working on it).
Not to mention all changes have nothing to do with what the community remotely wants. Like giving a major buff to elite monsters (so they are hard to solo even if you are 20+ levels higher than them) and removing XP rewards from gray quests, when there are barely enough quests to level to 80 as it is (this was reversed very quickly after the forums went up in flames).
And, the "massive" PvP sieges are still not working, even this far along. And yet, Gaudager is running his mouth about sieges with hundreds on each side.
They're even adding a half-assed PvP consequence system. It used to be a brilliant, unique idea to deal with griefers (involving a public jail) and they're coming up with a crappy fugitive system now (the blue name- red name system found in other MMOs).
I'm really disappointed, I tried supporting Funcom in it's release, but it's obvious they have crappy leadership.

Been waiting for this for quite some time now. My friend and I were disappointed these things weren't working from the get-go... Now I just have to figure out if he plays the damn thing anymore.

I was screwed by Funcom years ago with Anarchy Online.
The game was literally unplayable. So, they said that players wouldn't be charged until it was fixed. A week later, they said "Hey! All fixed!. We'll charge now!" It was not fixed. It was still impossible to play.
I tried canceling, but they kept charging me for months, necessitating credit card disputes, etc.
Never again.

Would've been nice if they were available for use at release. As it is, my account's been cancelled for a month now. I don't think I'm going to be inviting any friends.

$3? Well I suppose if they could get people to pay extra to play a week early, people will swallow downloading a demo. Pretty sleazy though.
As for the disks, AoC has been patched more for bug fixes since launch then most games will patch in a year. Hopefully they bundled all their fixes into a new update for the release version.

Aren't the demo disks of WoW $2.99? And you get a physical disk that you can hand out, reuse and quickly install.

@Thrillkiller: I'm curious what qualms you have with the game and if you only tried PVP. I know a lot of people love PVP, but there are too many adolescent men there for my tastes. My PVE server seems great.

I think the real reason they suggest that is because the game is 27GB! It took 2 hours just to install and unpack from the DL discs, then another 1.5 hours to update at 600kb/s. However the buddy codes are included in all versions of the game, you just have to go to your account to get the code. Except that they have not been implemented until now. About time.

Is there a proper PvP system in place yet?
What exactly has been added since launch?
Ill try it again if theres an actual PvP system in place like advertised.

2.99 to d/l the client.... I'd try Google first, you might have some luck. Anyways, not worth the download time or effort. If you want the AoC experence, try chewing on some tinfoil while rubbing your head with a cheese grater. Its basically the same.

So many of my friends bugged me about my friends code when I got the game at launch, I have at least 5 who are waiting.
It said the collector's edition codes work, do the standard ones not? I think I only got one code anyways.

$3 for a download is a slap in the face. I know the client is large, but whose fault is that? Not the buddy code recipient's.
When are new MMOs going to realize that in order to attract people from WoW, you have to go the extra mile to give extra value? Charging basically the same as WoW and charging to download a trial are not extra value.

I have a code for people. First email to vgerik1234@gmail.com receives my code when I get home from work. You will need the installs though. It is a 3$ download but you get 3 extra more days. So... let the spam commence!

$3 is ridiculous for that download. They should double the amount of playable time if you're going to have to pay ANYTHING for it. At this point, someone should create an iso of the install disk and put it online somewhere to avoid this foolery.

Just dropping by to say that almost no mmorpg goes retail completed, so just bashing conan about this every time there's a story about it is a bit over the top.

If i got a north american CD key, would that automatically assign me to NA servers and not be censored?
Also, would I be making a big mistake if I did buy the game. It seems like theres a lot of bashing in this game but given that it was a highly hyped mmorpg before release I want to see what the fuss is all about. Ah well, maybe till they give free trials.

Wait wait wait... 27GB??? o_O WTF? It looks like badly animated ass on a GOOD machine (I played it at a friend's house), anyone who isn't lily-white looks like a brown or grey colored blob from a distance on a Geforce 8800 for chrissakes! EVERYTHING looks dirty and yet at the same time everything has this weird bloom effect. I'm a good chunk of that is all the voice overs for the early questgivers. I tell you, the ONLY thing that didn't make me want to retch was the combat system (which was kinda a neat idea, with a marginal execution at BEST).
I also made the horrible mistake of playing a Bear Shaman, who are utterly useless and I clawed my way (with my gimped weapon/armor/spell availability) to level 20 and OMFG what a waste of an afternoon... People 5 levels lower than me were ROFFLING mobs at my level that were beating the tar out of me. And I'm not exactly an MMO newb.
Poorly organized, poorly executed, awful collision detection (nothing better than getting stuck on invisible floor boards), hilariously poor mob AI (I kept marveling that you could pull ONE mob and the two mobs next to him wouldn't come, but one several yards away sitting at a fire would jump up to join him...), wonky balance (Yahtzee's skewering seems SO spot on from my experience).
Simply put: the game is utter rubbish, even my boob-centric straight friends were all *YAWN* over it. It's a cute diversion away from a far superior MMO (WoW) but in the end it's just crap.

For that download price, they might as well go for a FF XI/Guild Wars route and charge that much for a little demo DVD that's in retail.

@LoganForge: The best part of the game now is the first 20 levels. It kind of just keeps going downhill from there in terms of polish and content.
My advice would be a wait a couple months until they add in some more content and polish things. Otherwise if you get the game just play it for the first free month and then wait until they add more stuff in.

@Furiursa: It ain't that bad. And it's getting better by the minute. Only thing I'm having problems with at the moment is the weak itemization and the lack of quests 55-60. But aside from that i think it's getting pretty good, looking forward to the pvp-patch coming in a couple weeks too. And saying that it's ugly is just ignorant and petty.

The devs fucked up yet again. The "buddy codes" that were given out were called "guest codes". The paper you get says to go online and then click the "receive guest code" button. That does not actually exist. There is a buddy code button, but people have been experiencing problems with that too. Basically Funcom fucked up yet again, i unsubscribed cause they keep evading the issues that need fixing, and the new pvp system means you are kosed by any npc when you kill a player (even out of defense).
