Aliens Game Being Written By Battlestar Galactica Team
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on July 23, 2008
How many more reasons do you need to get all excited over Gearbox's upcoming Aliens shooter? It's being done by Gearbox, for starters. Syd Mead's had a hand in designing the gear. And now we hear that Battlestar Galactica's writers are behind the story? The good news just keeps on rolling. Seems Bradley Thompson and David Weddle - the show's lead writers - had plenty of spare time on their hands during the TV writers strike, and kept themselves busy writing a "whole season" of TVs worth of material for the game. Excellent.

@Spenze: @cyhborg: @TheSpiller: True, videogames were not covered by the WGA strike, but still, their boss, Ronald D. Moore, not only participated in the strike, but wrote publicly about how passionate he was about the strike, going so far as to say that he knew he was making a tremendous sacrifice by going on strike, and risking the end of BSG from being produced, but he still felt it was worth the risk.
So, yeah, games not covered by WGA. But I would not be surprised if some writers out there would respond with something like: "We put our jobs and our livelihoods on the line. Where were you during all of that?!"

Lemme guess. By the end of the game, EVERYONE is an alien.
We need a Yakuza member that will save us all!

You had me worried for a second there.. that the people behind that absolutely terrible Battlestar game on Live were making the Aliens game. Crisis averted. I hope the writers do a good job, I've always felt games in the Aliens franchise lack a certain cinematic flare.

My god. I've never before seen such a confluence of talent on a video game. And only very rarely in movies!
What's it using for a graphical engine, the HOLY TRINITY? Will the lighting bloom be supplied by ACTUAL FUCKING ANGELS?

OK, we always knew that the Alien FPS would be at the very least, decent. But what about the Aliens RPG?

"You had me at Gearbox..."
Actually, they did, I've been hungering for a new Aliens game ever since AvP by Rebellion and to me AvP2 by Monolith, while very dear to many gamers for some reason, was a huge disappointment in my eyes. Lithtech just wasn't up to snuff compared to the amazing ray-tracing engine of the original.
But Gearbox, Aliens and BSG all thrown into one... this has "must buy" written all over it in big fat red letters and unclosed html blink tags.

I'm shocked they admit to writing this during the strike. I'm sure that's not going to make them any friends among their peers.

Thompson and Weddle are cool, but they're kinda like the "B" team... they worked with Ronald D. Moore on Deep Space Nine as well. They wrote some of the most rubbish episodes of the series... still, their work has definitely improved since they started on BSG. Here's hoping they can keep it tight!

I'm not very interested, but I would like to see what Syd Mead came up with and how it will look and be implemented into the game. Very sci-fi, no doubt.

BSG writers? Original artists? Craig Mullins!? Hell yeah! If only it wasn't being developed under Sega I'd say there's no way this could disappoint.

Bummer, BG acts like its the most important show on TV, with goofy wrestling terms like "Final Five" or "Fatal Four Way", one of those two. When I saw the mock up of the Last Supper painting with the BG characters, I almost threw up.

@BtownDesignGuy: Most script writers had to find some way to survive during the strike, and video-game and comics got quite some of them interested. Take into account that the strike was quite long and their low wages was the reason why they protested.

Cool. They certainly do a serious plotline. Craig Mullins? Woah, neat. H.R. Giger? Oh, they didn't mention him. So another slight mod of the old fashioned aliens then?
Trying to think of Giger alternatives, I've failed, but realized that Chris Cunningham would make a great creative director for an Aliens movie or game...
For those who don't know Cunningham, this is his video "Rubber Johnny" with sound by Aphex Twin (NSFW for seconds)

AvP2 has been a favorite game that my friends and I still play from time to time. I can't wait to pick up this title
@BtownDesignGuy:@Spenze:@cyhborg:@TheSpiller: The whole point of the writers strike was to raise wages for movies and tvshows, not games. If the writers would get a job writing a book, newspaper article, video game, or anything else that does not deal with the video industry, than thats fine. It would have no impact to their cause because in the end the companies would still need someone to write their movie and the fact that Joe Blow is writing this great Video Game story does not make them think about not giving in, it actually helps because now they have to worry if their writers are going to flock to other mediums like Comics or Games.

For the love of all things Gaming, they had better have an 8 person on-line Story Mode Co-Op for this game to get the authentic Colonial Marines feel for it. Put me on point with the heavy machine gun please.... ;)
