Animal Boxing Lets You Punch A Cat Right In The Face
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:40 AM on July 9, 2008
As a cat owner, there are many times throughout the day that I really feel like kicking my pets across the room to see what sort of an imprint they leave on the opposite wall, but sticky with blood counteracts fluffy and huggable, making the action counter-productive. Luckily for me there's Animal Boxing for the Nintendo DS, a new game from Spanish developer Gammick Entertainment, slated for a 4th quarter 2008 release. The game has your own personalised fighter going up against up to 50 different animal characters. Cats, foxes, penguins, and rhinos are all available for you to take your frustration out, using a gameplay mechanic that has you turning around your DS so your opponents' torsos and heads are displayed on the touchscreen...or just keep it turned the right way and battle animals that are standing on their heads. Your choice. PETA is going to adore this one.

Is it any wonder that animal cruelty is up a third this year in the UK with pathetic products like this about? Very very sad...

PS: Anybody who says its wrong to even consider punching/kicking a pet has never actually owned one.
Everybody who's owned a pet (myself included) knows for a fact that part of the frustration of pet ownership is when they do something that ticks you off so much...but then you can't yell at them because they're so durn kewt.
They know it too, which only increases the frustration.

Cats are deplorable creatures. They expect to be fed and do nothing. Oh, except crap in my garden and fight all night making that god-awful din. I take great pleasure in spraying them with my high-pressurised jet hose and if nailing one between the eyes with a sucker punch via a videogame is an extention of that, bring it on.
That said, I'll be highly traumatised should they hurt a poor innocent bunny :(

Seriously guys, calm down, its not that big a deal. I love my cat, but I also often tell her about the violent things I plan to do to her, to which her response is to continue purring on my lap. Its funny, perhaps silly/stupid, but offensive? Thats going a bit far.
Yes, I got her shaved. No, I didn't do it just to be a dick. BUT it is pretty funny :P
This game looks fun, we'll see how it actually plays though.

It's never OK to kick a cat. They didn't ask to live with you, and you've got responsibilities to them. I'm sure Fahey knows that. He was just making a joke-- we all think about things we'd never actually do, especially as unbidden things just pop into your mind every now and then. That's actually a hallmark of maturity-- to differentiate between actions and thoughts. Had Fahey said, kicking cats is awesome, you'd have a point, but he's certainly not trying to incite a cat-kicking cultural revolution or anything. Maybe lighten up a bit?

Wow, already some whining comments over internet sarcasm. Nobody wants to actually harm your precious animals, calm down. I have 5 bunnies that I've wanted to throw before, but I could never hurt my bun-buns. Doesn't mean that they don't frustrate you into a fantasizing state of mind involving them and violence. It was a joke, get the PETA out of your ass and move on.

@number9:
There are a good deal of jokes regarding violence everywhere on Kotaku without condoning actual violence. Nobody can hold a red flag simply because this involves an animal instead of a human, regardless of your personal experiences.
If that's not the case, then there is much more wrong here than a cat-kicking joke.

I agree with prodld50, I find nothing funny about Fehey's comments, joke or otherwise.
I adopted a cat from the shelter that it looked like someone had decided to kick repeatedly - it had a broken tail (which had to be amputated), a broken hip, and bruised organs.
There's nothing funny about animal abuse.

@number9: I know it was a joke, and I doubt that anyone on Kotaku who's thought of harming their pets has actually done so, and I was going to give this thread a pass, but I did want to thank for adopting that mistreated cat.
I once had a dog that had been so abused by his previous owner that whenever I put my hand out to pet him, he would cringe and shy away. After a few years of kind treatment, he got over it, and became an excellent pet.
So yeah, actual animal cruelty is no joke. I'm not going to get this game myself, but I wouldn't say anyone who does necessarily supports abusing animals.

So yeah, totally understand the occasional wish to kick cat for something which they haven't actually done with malicious intent. There's a big gap between thinking and doing, though, and there's no-one here that's commented on the wrong side of that line. So! DISCUSSION OVER <3

Even after the guy said that the tape didn't stick to the cat, that it was harmless, that the cat didn't suffer.
