ANOTHER Tales Game Coming, This Time For The Wii
At a press conference held yesterday in Japan, Namco Bandai's Makoto Yoshizumi has apparently announced the development of another Tales game. This time for the Wii. And no, he's not talking about Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, he's talking about another one. With Dawn of the New World, Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Hearts and Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 all on their way, this makes the currently unnamed title the fifth Tales game currently in developmenti. Leave no stone unturned, Namco Bandai!

The Tales PS3 was actually the recently announced PSP game. As far as anyone knows, there is no PS3 Tales game in development. I know this will probably come to US, but I want the DS games to come here too, they are incredible.

Heh heh, and don't forget Swords of Legendia for Wii, which is apparently still in production but also technically not a Tales game (I'm thinking like Dragon Quest Swords).
To answer a few questions, Tempest came out in Japan but not America. The claimed PS3 game seems to have originated from a Famitsu article on Tales games showing a question mark next to the PS3 and saying that they hoped one would come out (not a confirmation or even a tease).
Also, the Tales series has certain games referred to as "mothership" titles which are the main games. Spin-offs and such are the "escort titles".
Reneg
Cool. I hope it is coming to the US. I'm sure they're not going to stop until they come full cirlce: Tales of Tales, the Chronicles of Stories Untold.
Ryodestined
Tales is freaking awesome!
Mind you, the last one I played was Abyss :( And some of Innocence.. which was totally japanese and didn't make too much sense.
MetaKz
I hope this game will be better, than ToS RoK, but it was declared as a spin off and the monster capture, and usage is well excuted, but the battle system didn't win me over =(. Changing targets was annoying as well.
AznSlackerType
@Squeek: And suddenly it's all clearer. I never even looked into it, I just thought they went back to 2D and made it crappier along the way. Although I didn't play it until after Abyss, and I really enjoyed Abyss (about as much as Symphonia).
It's sad when people shrug off Tales games. I saw reused themes in Abyss, and that didn't stop me from enjoying it. Too many people seem to shrug off games that aren't unique enough.
formina
Tales characters rather flat? Lmao. Don't think so. I enjoy Tales more than FF, thus why I'm more of a Tales fan than a FF fan.
Really happy to hear about this. ToS2 really isn't their "Main" Wii game, not that ToS2 is bad because I'm really enjoying the game right now.
And there are different Tales teams so it isn't like the same group developing all these games.
SakuChan
@Justice7541: Tales (and SMT) has better character development than FF?! You really think so? Maybe if you mean character customization, but as far as developing someone within the story, I've always found the Tales characters to be rather flat.
Herc
@Green-clad Gamer Dude: Wait, wrong window. Thought I was in the new Tales DS post. Nevertheless, I can't wait for whatever this title may be.
Green-clad Gamer Dude
Looks cool. Def looking forward to it.
Green-clad Gamer Dude
@formina: Legendia wasn't made by Namco Tales Studio. It just had the name.
That's why everyone hated it.
Also, this is GREAT news. I was seriously freaking out about what to do regarding Vesperia, but I can live without buying a 360 if Wii is going to get another Tales game on top of a sequel to one of the best games ever made using the battle ending from one of the other best games ever made.
Squeek
@AquaPatty: Oh. Well. My dreams are crushed.
@Kia: But...I want it so bad...
Narsil
Why hasn't Kotaku done the PS3 Tales of Game. It was annouced in a Japanese Magazine like last week.
Sailorcancer
@DaiMacculate: I still haven't beaten Abyss. Fun game, I just haven't been motivated to beat it yet.
Amazon_Chris
Oh my gee, can I play 2 Tales titles in the same time period on the SAME system?
I'll try.

Tales of Awesome

Well, I guess it's cool since I have a Wii, but I have to ask...will they actually make their way to the states?
Saint Anima
As a general rule, Tales games tend to have better character development, more intriguing dungeons, better humor, and generally manages to keep its focus as a traditional jRPG without overextending themselves, better than Final Fantasy or whatever the "big" jRPG franchise is these days.
The only other series that I can think of that manages to do the same is the SMT series.
So yeah, the more Tales games on the U.S. market, the happier I'll be, since I already have a PS3 and Wii and am getting a 360 for Vesperia.
Justice7541
Please, stop. The Wii only needs one Tales game right now. Symphonia 2 is plenty enough for it and I would much rather see a tales game for the PS3.
Granted, the only reason I haven't yet sold my wii is because of the the Symphonia sequel, but I'd rather see another PS2 tales than a second wii tales. I just don't have fun playing the wii for some reason.
Who knows, maybe they'll be be good and I'll be happy to play them, but come on; where's the PS3 love? Either way, more Tales games are fine with me.
Grocerspride
@Narsil: It amazes me people still get their hopes up for handheld Tales. Get over it, hon, it's not gonna happen.
Kia
@DukeOfPwn: It is? Really? Given the fact no major current gen console has had an RPG release since Lost Odyssey...Well, y'know. Whatevs.
Oh, and just ignore the fact Tales is about as un-FF as a JRPG gets. But then, we couldn't expect a troll to actually know what he was talking about! That's just crazy! =D
Kia
I haven't been keeping up lately, but are we even getting these games? Namco seems to not like localizing many Tales games (including the very very good Innocence). It's really a shame.
Grahf
@Narsil:
No, it's not.
TotT came out in 2006 in JAPAN, but there's no way it's ever going to reach here because it was an absolute failure, losing its "mothership" title from the horrible sales and even worse customer reception.
AquaPatty
YES. This has made my day.
And yes, the Symphonia games take place approximately four thousand years before Phantasia.
TempestOblivion
@Mikolai: The Symphonia games are the same universe as Phantasia if I recall correctly.
And on that note: Namco needs to translate Phantasia and put it on the VC. Like right now.
Silent Predator
360, DS, PSP, Wii, and now ANOTHER Wii. Tales is really taking over! :D
I wish they'd make a PS3 Tales game, too :/ I still don't have a use for my PS3 beyond MGS4/MGO/old-PS2-games-I-never-finished.
Solertia
Either the Tales studio can reproduce like rabbits, or they have multiple personalities. Or clones! I don't get it...
hikaizer
@marmidukestank:
Each of the "Tale" games has their own respective storyline, except that it may be based on the same world as a previous installment. (Not sure if they all are, though...)
So possibly, any Tales game would be part of the main series. The only one that's ever had a sequel that I can think of is Symphonia which, like X-2, is more of a branch off the first one.
I'm already looking forward to Tales of Symphonia 2 (loved the first Symphonia), but another Tales game is welcomed as well. ^_^
I just hope that they keep up with the quality and feel that it has so far.
Mikolai
Yes, a new Tales game for the Wii. I can't wait for ToS: 2. I swear this better come to the US. I'm sick of Namco screwing out the North American gamers with their lack of translating the Tales games.
FISSURE
Can I ask? (because it's late and I couldn't be bothered perusing gigantic Wikipedia articles): Does the Tales franchise have a MAIN series?
By that I mean, in the context of Final Fantasy, there have been an assload of games but only 12 (or 13 if you count X-2 which you probably shouldn't) main games. Same with the various Nintendo franchises.
Is Tales as hard to catagorise as Final Fantasy or Mario? Or do they just make them with no regard to the separation of main games to spin-offs?
marmidukestank
How does the tales team make so many games at the same time? They must have cloned themselves about 5 times over. Normally I might say this way a bad thing, but it seems like none of these are cheaply made...
Valshier
Oh, don't forget Tales of the Tempest for DS. That's coming out too. See?
[ds.ign.com]
There were a couple videos released back in...2006. Maybe Namco should focus less on coming up with new titles and get the ones they have out the door? News is great, but I want to play this stuff. And they don't get it all out the door soon, you just know something's gonna get canned and if it's Tempest I am gonna be pissed.
Narsil
@DukeOfPwn: Yeah, exactly. Which is why I'm excited for a Tales game, since it's different.
@phinehas: Just finished that yesterday! :-)
mjn328
Woo. Hopefully there'll be more good companies that will support the Wii. I love the games that use the motion controls well, and they are few
Shin-san
Vesperia and the new Symphonia are definitely on my to buy list this year, along with 2 or 3 other games between now and years end. I'm just wondering if I'll have the time and money for all of them... Budget is already tight as is, argh!
MantisDragon
@DukeOfPwn: Tales games aren't anything like Final Fantasy. I like their battle system a lot better, actually.
JonDarkwood
I think my heart just fluttered a bit.
EmeraldDragon
Slowly but surely, Wii is silently becoming the focus of many developers...
Kenology
Tales of Symphonia was one of my favorite games that I picked up for the Gamecube. I've got no problem with them having multiple games in development to pick up in the future. Hell, they just announced the one for the DS when there's already one out for the DS that hasn't been localized for the US yet.
crescentfresh
@fusilero: the article was speculating without any evidence that something may come out in the presser. I'm sure bash is holding it off for another article (or to prevent another flame war) but they showed the tales roadmap which left absolutely no mention of the ps3. Not to say it won't happen, but as far as the press event goes you can pretty much officially think of that rumor as dead until the next set of rumors.
muu
Seeing stuff like this is why I do not understand the type of people who cringe at the thought of another Halo game ever being made again.
That Boy Baked
@formina: Whoa! Welcome to the RG, bro.
Anyway, I've never played a Tales game in my life, but I'm definitely willing to try. I LOVE the flood of JRPGs being announced everywhere.
phinehas
@DukeOfPwn: Good thing this isn't one of those.
More Tales games - WooHoo!
Silent Predator
Every day I wish a little more that my Wii hadn't been stolen.
TomSkylark
@DaiMacculate: There was also an article in Famitsu about a PS3 tales:
fusilero
Sony is getting shafted this time... no tales "exclusively" for it and PSP gets radiant mythology which is a rehash basically. i rather play a new tales game.
shaselai
Cool, my brother will be pleased.
PumpkinPieman
@Amazon_Chris: IIRC, its not announced yet for PS3, but there have been rumors that there IS yet another one in development for it, or that the exclusivity of Vesperia is timed, etc. Stuff posted on a Namco site and quickly pulled, that sort of thing.
DaiMacculate
Lol oh man, Tales is the new "Game with Bloom Lighting effects"
pewpewlazer
Hey, as long as it isn't 2D, I'm fine. Tales of Symphonia and the Abyss were great games, and Legendia kind of made me cry. So uh, hooray for 3D Tales.
formina
Keeping track of Tales of games is getting comparable to world war 2 fps games.
Guild_Navigator
As if the market wasn't already flooded with FF-esque JRPGs...
DukeOfPwn
Which one is the PS3/PSP getting?
Amazon_Chris
Honestly, despite how beaten this horse is Tales games even now are pretty consistantly quality. Tales of the World can safely be ignored and Namco isn't gonna bring over Tales of Hearts, as they neglected to bring over the last 20 DS Tales games, so that leaves Vesperia, Symphonia 2 and the unannounced one, and I'd be willing to bet at least 2 of those are good, if you like Tales style RPGs.
Nobuyuki
also, this tales game will be a "mothership" title.
