Apple iPhone Games Officially Live
Posted by Brian Crecente at 3:00 AM on July 12, 2008
Yesterday those willing to get fancy with forced firmware updates and such were able to sneak into the iPhone's App Store and buy games for the device early. Today, firmware 2.0 and access to those 30 or so games are official.
If you're looking to buy a game for your iPhone than make sure to check out our Ultimate Guide to iPhone Gaming which includes quick impressions of 20 or so of the games as well as screenshots, videos and details for most of the games currently available and a bunch yet to come.
Our most recent update to the guide includes impressions of Tetris, EA's Sudoku and Crash Bandicoot Nitro Racing. Personally, I've played around with 15 different iPhone games and my favourites so far include Super Monkey Ball, Bomberman Touch and Trism... oh Trism. Oh, I also really like Zen Pinball.

@AxelHunter: There's some kind of problem preventing Touch users from getting the new firmware right now, unless you go find a copy of the firmware online and install it manually. If you want to do that, you're on your own (but I wouldn't blame you - $10 for a firmware update is BS, especially when they can't even release it properly).
@SpikyBry: Yes, the games work on either system just fine.

I updated yesterday when TUAW posted the link to the 2.0 firmware. Haven't had any problems, everything works awesomely.
On another note has anyone been able to download this game:
[phobos.apple.com] (iTunes linke)
It's listed under the free software but iTunes tells me it's not there whenever I try to download. The screenshots look really cool, which is why I'm kind of sad it's not working. Heh. I've been all over Super Monkey Ball and Trism. Fun stuff.

It really wasn't that hard to download the update yesterday. I'm loving all my apps and games. Aqua Forest, mondo Solitaire, Monkey Ball, Ms. PAC MAN, Pinball, Tile Sudoku, BattleAtSea, Trism, and Tap Tap Revenge. I'll probably get crash too :).

@technical_ta: The Kotaku icon is a web link, I think. I just updated my iTouch. Weird think though, YouTube is refusing to recognize that I've synced to my iTunes already. Odd. Anyway, what did you think of CroMag Rally, Brian? I have some fond memories of that game, and I am contemplating buying it.

There isn't a Kotaku app is there? If so, I need it.

@Tubatic: No Classic iPod games on the iPhone or iPod touch.
@ThisCharmingMan: Open kotaku.com on Safari, tap "+", then Add to Home.
@JocktheMotie: The bricks are from a. people who unlocked (and got relocked/hosed by the firmware update) or b. those who downloaded the firmware BEFORE it was available (the one in the link that circulated/went over torrents is NOT the one that got out this morning).
I agree with everyone that 10$/8€ for the Touch is UTTER MADNESS.

Amazing how Apple releases a phone and nearly everyone bricks their old ones and can't activate new ones, yet nothing is heard about it. However if MS releases a software update and you can't print for some reason you'd think they started another Holocaust.
I'm no fan of MS or Apple, but the Apple homerism is getting ridiculous.

Yea, I can't even activate it yet. I'll wait till the server calms down later tonight, no point of getting into hoop-la about it.
As long as it doesn't brick, I am all game.

@l0ne: No they are not. My sister is your average idiot iPhone user. She downloaded the update, went to connect to the iTunes store to complete the update, and the phone couldn't connect because Apple's servers are jammed. Now her phone, and many others', are bricks until the update can be completed.

You know, I don't understand why people spend so much on the iPhone. I own the ETEN M600+ Pocket PC phone with Windows Mobile 5.0, fairly old, however, I can play Wolfenstein 3D on it, I can play Doom on it, I can play some Brain Age rip off on it, I can watch Youtube videos and download youtube videos on it, I can use any messenger on it, I use Skype on it, I can do anything on it just about. So what makes iphone so special? The "i"?

well i unfortunately won't be able to check these out until someone cracks them for the hacked iphone. I'll just have to take comfort in the fact that i have an NES emulator on my shit and have been playing the hell out of Battletoads.
not to mention that i can use it on the T-Mobile network
Holla!

@darthmatt: Everytime you see an iPhone you should look down at your dog in shame and point to the phone and say "You see! You see what I gave up for you? Now go get me a beer and this time dont drink half of it before you give it to me"

Kotaku, you know you can take screenshots with the 2.0 firmware? Just press the top button and home button for a sec. See one here, crisp and clear: [twitpic.com]
Also, I was lucky enough to get the leaked firmware and install it yesterday. The games are good, the graphics great, and the resolution better than the PSP!
It looks like they pulled the Aurora game from the store, by the way.

@Viper: I'm getting the error too, its because the servers crashed, and be grateful--sounds like some of the people who did update got bricked!

Not so fast. So many people went on iTunes to download the new 2.0 software update that the servers crashed and left many with bricked iPhone units as early as 8:00AM this morning.
The talk is that the global, widespread bricking and the servers crashing has already caused Apple's stock to fall.
Apparently the new update temporarilly erases all data from your iPhone and then reinstalls it once the update is complete, but the problem is the severs crashed just at the wrong time, leaving many without their music, contacts, anything.
I've been trying access the update to download but like many in forums I'm getting messages saying there was a problem connecting to the store.
Also, I've read that AT&T stores can't activate the 3G iphones because the servers have been shut down, leaving many with unusable phones.
This is a news story Kotaku, look into it!

Finally got the update around 7 last night. Took about 45 minutes to get it all running though.
I have to say: I'm really impressed by what is available for launch of the update. It sounds crazy to actually consider it a "launch", but it really felt that way... like I just got a whole new machine even though it was just a firmware update.
I do have to pick up the 3G, but in the meantime, there's some really sweet stuff on here. Can't wait to see what comes next!
