Blitz: The League II Screens
Posted by Brian Crecente at 2:00 AM on July 9, 2008
As we heard late last year, Midway is bringing Blitz back. Blitz: The League II will include a new story mode written by ESPN Playmakers writer Peter Egan and will feature player-controlled touchdown celebrations, an enhanced on-field Clash Mode, online multiplayer, precision-aim tackles and late hits. Lawrence Taylor will return as the game's cover athlete.
"Professional football has long sought to gloss over the often brutal realities that surround the game and its players", said Mona Hamilton, vice president of marketing, Midway Home Entertainment. "Blitz: The League II embraces the most compelling storylines behind America's favourite sport and allows fans to experience them in a bold, interactive way".
The game is set to hit the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 this spring.
CHICAGO, IL - July 8, 2008 - Midway Games Inc. (NYSE: MWY), a leading interactive entertainment software publisher and developer, announced today the development of Blitz: The League® II. Back for another season of heart-pumping, bone-crushing, no-holds-barred football action, Blitz: The League II strips the rules and regulations from traditional football to enhance the fun by bringing the pain. Complete with an all-new story mode penned by former ESPN "Playmakers" writer, Peter Egan, and the return of football legend, Lawrence Taylor, Blitz: The League II builds on the success of the previous release with new features and enhanced gameplay. Blitz: The League II is scheduled for release this fall for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system.
"Professional football has long sought to gloss over the often brutal realities that surround the game and its players," said Mona Hamilton, vice president of marketing, Midway Home Entertainment. "Blitz: The League II embraces the most compelling storylines behind America's favourite sport and allows fans to experience them in a bold, interactive way."

post-apocalyptic football? pff. real future players would doff such unnecessaries as padding and helmets. ..hrm, maybe there's a market for post-apocalyptic rugby?
aside: it's weird to say i thought briefly of getting this just to keep gaming jobs in chicago. sigh. i could play it on my bro-in-law's PS3! once! yeah...

@rKarhu: I was thinking of the same thing!
Even though I really could care less about football I have to say this looks pretty nice. I just wish they could put a little bit of more detail on the grass than just putting a texture on a plane.

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only FOOTBALL!!!
They couldn't get the Blood Bowl license so they kept the stadium design and just copypasted in players from the prequel.

@JesseLacey: How sad there probably won't be another APF for quite awhile if at all, sales just weren't up to snuff.

I used to enjoy playing NFL Blitz. It was always a fun game to play with friends. However, now that I've grown up, I tend to prefer the more developed gameplay of Madden.

those look like some nice pics from a nice prerendered video. They show them and then wonder why expectations are never met. This game will probably look a lil better than NFL Tour.

I miss when Blitz had the NFL license. This new game is more aggravating than enjoyable. I don't want to break limbs, or shoot up painkillers, or play through the ESPN series Playmakers. It's funny that in America we would ever support this kind of game. I don't think we'd clamor for a baseball game where you shoot up steroids in the dugout, or have a drug-test peeing minigame, or sleep with two hundred woman every season. I don't think we'd play a Tour de France title where a pimply doctor injects synthetic testosterone into your thigh-- though I bet Floyd Landis would be willing to be on the cover of that game, I understand he needs the money.
I thought the point of sports games was to elevate sport, and the things that surround it-- the intricacies of management, athletes getting big contracts, the exhilaration of the fans. The old Blitz games were fun because tackling people BIG is cooler than tackling people normally. But this-- where this franchise has gone, is where it continues to go-- is just asinine.

@Maxyboy13: Yea, I left a profound comment as well. Or a rant.
I was always a fan of Blitz. Maden was great through college, but sometimes arcadey sports is a breath of fresh air. Going through summer cleaning and found even more old magazines; did you guys know NBA Jam actually had a run on PS2?. I wanted to run a small blog with scans from PC/Videogame magazines from 1990-, but I would be breaking every single copyright law in existence. Some of the rumor mills regarding Nintendo "Dolphin" and the rest are just lol.

So have football games now *upgraded* to the shit, piss, dark green, brown, and gray color spectrum like every other next gen game?

@wild homes gets retconned!: I agree. When they added :the league to blitz it pretty much ruined the game for me. I wanted to like it but they had to overcomplicate everything. Ahh I miss blitz 02 and mlb slugfest. It didnt matter what teams you had as long as you were good at the cheap shots.

Posted 4:44 AM 9/7/08
@dannyzuko: Agreed. This new thing, it's not Blitz. It's just depressing. The game was supposed to be football, just with bigger hits. Now it's something else entirely-- too focused on things outside of playing actual football. They might as well call it Michael Strahan's Messy Divorce 09.

Fuck EA and madden so I'm in for nfl blitz. I've always liked that blitz was fun, and you can knocked people after the play ends. I hope it's grown a little but still fun to play. I guess it won't be NFL but who cares...if it's fun and it's football then I'm in.

Did anyone play the original Blitz back in the mid/early 80s on the Vectrex system? I had it and had no clue about how to play football...plus the computer cheats like crazy (its players can run faster than yours, for example)

Obviously nobody complaining about "OMG BROWN" has ever watched football in the rain. Depending on stadium and natural lighting, you can and will get a brown hue over the field. Sometimes brownish/gray. Quick example from google: [images.townnews.com]
Seriously, the absolute worst 'complaint' is when idiots with no sense start grabbing their crotches, linking to that stupid furry comic and screaming about BROWN!!!!! Sometimes there's a case for it, but 90% of the time its from a bunch of quasi-meme repeating idiots.

As long as the announcer says things like:

... then it's a day one buy for me. ^_^

wow. maybe I missed (or rather, am late to the party for) the injoke about all the brown, but I actually said to myself upon seeing the pics, "hey, wow, uh, that's brown." And then proceeded to try to figure when "Next-Gen" became synonymous with "brown."
How much more brown could it be? The answer is 'none'... None more brown.
(It's news to me because I have a Wii - now with 58% less brown! - and am just now on the verge of even looking at the other systems because they've finally put out some games I might be able to stand.)

Upon first glance at the pictures, I thought they were depicting a much earlier version of professional football. You know, circa Sammy Baugh and flimsy leather helmets and whatnot.
And I realized that would be an awesome game. Who wouldn't want to play with the Chicago Cardinals or the Cleveland Rams or the Boston Braves? It could look all old-timey and have a crackly radio announcer voice and everything. Sweeeeeet.
