Blizzard Worldwide Invitiational Wrap-Up
Posted by Brian Crecente at 5:00 AM on July 2, 2008
Last month I had to choose between flying out to Paris to check out Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational and, it turns out, Diablo III or going on vacation. I sided with my sanity and decided to take a short leave from the site.
I've been spending my day or so back from vacation reading through all of the coverage that came out of the City of Lights. There's been quite a bit to read. If you missed out over the weekend here's the full run down.

@i_9: I fully expect announcements at Blizzcon.
That darn purple penguin is insidious.
I for one am still short of breath from the D3 announcement. I guess I'm a sucker for Blizzard's RPGs.

@Brian Crecente: Thanks, those page breaks were nuts.
Kinda disappointed we have no clue wtf was up with the purple penguin though...

@i_9: Yep, found out what you mean there when i did blizzcon 07. Looking back the money i spent on plane and hotel and on stuff there could have been better spent elsewhere, especially now cause it seems my beta key from then is going to be for wotlk...
which may not be bad cause i'll just sell it then.

Hehe, just got back from the Invitational myself late last night, or morning, whatever you prefer. I was personally surprised that there wasn't more WotLK information poured out, not that the complete alpha isn't already fucking leaked all over the internet. But with beta within days or rather, soonish - I suppose it doesn't matter, no more NDA = everything out.
Yet, despite the game being not nearly finished enough to launch into beta (nice wording, I know), I'm not that all surprised; there is still so much left to see and discover about WotLK that I just can't help but be damn excited for it to go into retail.
Though, I too would've probably taken the vacation over the Invitation, were I in your shoes. Every expo. or "convention" is always made to seem more glamorous on these websites and other media outlets than they really are. Found myself bored nearly the entire show. :\

@DaveKap:
Don't think so.
Nice wrap-up, Mr. Crecente, but is anyone seeing the load of extra line breaks in between story links?

@peacefulpony: Have you seen the internet reaction to the announcement? The game will be huge. I had friends calling me up who are not the type to dwell on Kotaku saying "dude, they are making a Diablo 3!". Id be willing to bet damn near everyone who has a PC or Mac capable of running it and any interest in games whatsoever will pick it up.
@Project Thanatos: Yup, you are right sir. My bad.

Diablo had its day. Seriously, the gaming landscape has changed. DIII might do well on the PSP but I doubt it will rekindle the success of its predecessors.

@Cantih: On the WoW side of things. Few new class abilities learned about. For example Shaman get raid wide totems, a hex spell. Hunters pet's get talents.
But beyond that, nothing we didn't already know and really disappointing. Looks like they are saving everything for Blizcon. Diablo 3 was the only interesting thing of Bliz's WWI.

I know everyone is "OMG Diablo III", but was there any Starcraft II or WoW news, at all?

I combined my vacation with the WWI :)
Strolled through Paris for 3 days before the event started and I don't regret it one bit. For me the event was awesome but not something to spend an entire day. Just a few hours on both days.

@MisterIrons: The worldstone was created to hide Sanctuary from Heaven/Hell. Later it was modified to stunt the growth of Nephalem (Angel/Demon hybrid) until they became Humans.
