Bungie 'Encouraged', 'Excited' By Halo Wars
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:00 PM on July 31, 2008

Bungie seems excited about the Ensemble-developed Halo Wars. The game is planted firmly in the RTS genre, so, for example, it's not necessary to have players moved in and out of cover. Gushes Bungie AI maven Damian Isla:
We've done a lot of talking with Ensemble guys, and we're all really excited about Halo Wars, because from everything we've seen so far it's a very cool, faithful adaptation... Everything we've seen has been very, very encouraging — we're very excited about it. And of course, [Halo Wars is] also getting right the basics, the general roles — even fictionally. What role do grunts play in the Covenant fighting forces, what role do the Elites play, what role do Warthogs play, what role do Spartans play... All this kind of thing. I think they really nailed that. It's encouraging.
Great news, this.

@MentalNote: I say this with no sarcasm/cynicism: might as well get starcraft.
Unless you're really a big fan of Halo and have to play as one of their character.
This game will probably sell well, but won't be as big as Halo. RTS have a steep learning curve.

I'm not a big RTS fan or even a Halo fan(I've played all three)but I'm interested in this.

The RTS scene has been a tad dry for me, I'm looking forward to playing Halo Wars, if only it would work with a USB mouse and keyboard.

Halo Wars interests me as a Halo:CE fanboy, in ways that Halo Halo 2 and 3 did not.

If it gets a good reception, I'll probably purchase this game for PC when it gets released on that platform.

it is good that Bungie have high praise for this, hopefully the game is well received by Halo fans that arent RTS fans.

@Geomanis: Hmm, an interesting thought. I've always firmly believed that RTS games belong on the PC, but it'd be great to see an RTS that works well on console. If it does work well on that platform then hopefully others will then follow in its footsteps.
That said I think FPS on the console is alot easier to do than RTS. The joypad lends itself quite well to any game controlling a single character imo... but I've never liked selecting RTS-units and such with a joypad. I'm not even sure why, it just feels wrong.

Looks good, from that perspective its getting everything right. Controls is what makes or breaks this. They don't have to be perfect, they just have to work....easier said than done with a console RTS game.

Unless of course, you don't actually like Starcraft :P. Personally I've always preffered Ensemble's work to Blizzard's so I'm looking forward to what they're doing here :3

its an interesting concept, but, the RTS/FPS are only good on PC is killing my impressions of this. Halo made me rethink about console FPS, maybe this will redefine console RTS?

It's going to have to be pretty good. Endwar is very promising with it's speech-control system, I can see that being the number one RTS game on consoles instead.

Also, no, this is not coming to PC. I can't see them taking the effort to completely revamp the control system for PC when they know it won't sell well when the competition is so much better anyway.

@IronsUK: I was in the EndWar Beta (psssttt NDA) and I can guarantee they wont even comes close to #1 RTS game if they don't fix their font problem. On a SD 90%+ of the text on screen was illegible. Their developers like to use size 2 fonts. But the voice control system was real easy. It first feels weird but then you get used to it and you eventually learn all of the commands so you are no longer required to read like a robot. "Calling... all units... attack... hostile... 7."

It's cool that they're trying something new here and have built a control system from the ground up but i'm still not convinced it'll work. I mean sure it'll probably be useable but i don't expect this to be anything more than average when compared to the likes of Supreme Commander, Dawn of War II, Starcraft II, Company of Heroes etc.
I don't get why they don't just give in and let people use a keyboard and mouse. That's the main reason that i still cling to PC gaming, and i'm sure the consoles could attract a bunch of PC gamers if they opened up the control options. No doubt console fanboys would whine like hell but they wouldn't stop gaming and if all games had control filters like UT3 on PS3 there'd be no reason to complain.

@Burguois of Arabia: Point taken. It's hard not to be skeptical of a console RTS though. People always accuse console games of being 'dumbed down' and in this case they've admitted to doing just that, and given the fact that they want to reach as wide an audience as possible with this title... i'm going to keep my pessimist hat on for this one. Yes, they could prove me wrong and release an RTS that'll rival Starcraft (and chess?) but i highly doubt it. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

@CoreWolf: Simple is not antithetical to strategic. Take Chess, for example. It only has six different unit types so the amount of depth must be incredibly lacking, right?

@notoriousEIC: Ok, i don't, but i've followed the interviews and info they've released so far and they've mentioned having to remove a bunch of stuff and simplify things to fit the interface, so i'm not expecting this to have as much depth as other strategy titles.

Just out of curiousity, how do you know the competition is so much better when this game isn't even out yet? Given that it's being developed by Ensemble, a respected maker of PC RTS games, it should turn out fairly well. Regardless, I suspect a PC version will eventually be available.

@mustang:\
I remember the same was said about FPS games, hell I was one of the main people who said it and now look at how great they play on consoles. It just takes the right developer to get a good standardized control scheme I believe. With that said Im still getting the PC version :3

I agree that this won't be as deep as a PC RTS, but "dumbed down" doesn't necessarily mean "bad." I think it looks pretty slick, based on the hands-on videos I saw around E3.
If nothing else, a Halo-branded one might get some new players into the genre who then might goon their PC and get into one of the "true" RTS's. If you are a fan of the genre, expanding the potential market can only be a good thing.

I think this will do just fine as an console RTS. LOTR and C&C3 were good, the controls were a lil slow to repsond at times but i still fully enjoyed them. UaW i only played the demo and although it looked quite good it jsut didnt grab me like the other 2.
This will hoepfully be better than the others, not because its halo > LOTR/C&C because it isnt, but because I think the halo universe would make a damn fine RTS

Bungie is no doubt encouraged that Ensemble is following their M.O. of taking a PC genre and dumbing it down to the point of absurdity for Xbots.
Ensemble flat out admitted to this in their 1Up interview, saying Xbox fans have short attention spans and need everything sexed up.

I don't really see how you could launch attacks and defend your base at the same time - most RTS's give you a mini-map that allows you to jump around places.
Selecting units also usually sucks on console RTS's - you end up sending all the units you selected just because you can't be bothered to start dragging out single units.
By all means, I HOPE this makes a good title, but judging by my past experiences - RTS belong on PCs, not consoles.

I definitely understand being skeptical of a console RTS. Personally, I'm being optimistic because I badly want a good one for the 360. Given Ensemble's pedigree and the way the Halo Universe lends itself to this sort of game, I think there's a pretty good shot it will deliver.
