Bungie Working On a Halo Game, Says Microsoft
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:40 PM on July 16, 2008
I know. Shocking, isn't it? Speaking with MTV, Microsoft's Don Mattrick has revealed, perhaps accidentally, that Bungie are working on a Halo game for Microsoft. And it's not the Peter Jackson one. It's something else. Rather than insert the same tired, old theories about a Halo game sans Master Chief, or a Forerunner game, or any other well-worn rumour, I'm just going to point out that Bungie are a big developer, and that before you all go wondering what this means with regards to today's "other" Bungie news, it may be worth bearing in mind they're more than capable of working on more than one game at a time.

@Pornosaur:
I guess it's too much to ask to expect something new these days. This generation is all about rehashing what's popular instead of pushing boundaries or trying new concepts.
Maybe we'll be lucky and this'll all blow over and end up being that they're just helping Peter Jackson with Halo Chronicles, but I doubt it.

I think that they would probably be contractually obliged to work on Halo games considering that Microsoft actually agreed to let them go. I don't think they'd have let them go without some concessions.
And imagine how annoying it would be if they were told they couldn't announce something and some executive goes and leaks something.

@Archaotic: Well in a way "offically" they haven't annouced anything. They were going to and were denied. I have to admit I didn't follow the events leading up to this that closely. Were their indications that this was something else "Halo" related? Besides the Marathon games what else has Bungie devolped? Would be people be happy with another fps? Both Halo and Marathon were sci-fi games, so I guess it would be intersting to know if they were moving in a totally different direction.

Master Chief is an iconic gaming character now but, with all these Halo's coming out I think they're going to bury the franchise. Including this and the Peter Jackson one, there will be seven Halo games. Give it a rest already.

I don't know, how fractured is the Bungie/MS relationship at this point where both parties don't even seem to be communicating at a pre-planned big event like E3? I must preface by saying that I find the Halo games to be way over-rated. They seem like a solid dev though and maybe it was just the fact that MS basically trounced the other 2 hardware developers on the first two days of E3 and wants to save announcing anything else Halo related for another time.

Why is it so shocking that they are working on another halo or that another one could be made? Halo 3 made it crystal clear that there was going to be another eventually. Also, I'm betting that this IS the game that was being hinted at and that it will be revealed tommorow as planned.

@mentalboy11: They do have a few things, it's just that they either don't show very well or they seem stuck in development hell.
Like the vehicle system in Banjo for example is pretty innovative, but people tend to mostly rip on it.
In the movies, while looking pretty horrible personally, is pretty creative in all honesty, as are the live game shows, but once again, they just don't show very well.
The only other two that really strikes me as having a lot of innovation potential are Alan Wake and Halo Chronicles, but sadly neither of those seem to be in sight.
You can't entirely blame them though, if people tend to clamor for sequels over everything else Microsoft is probably going to listen in the end.
But yeah you're right that overall they could be doing a lot more to get more inventive games from a first party perspective.

ive noticed a microsoft trend lately.
Does microsoft EVER do anything new and innovating?
if they do, please point them out because almost their entire press conference was shouting "YES, we are bring games from other consoles, and either stealing them and renaming them, or taking them by force!"
they took a lot of stuff from nintendo especially, and some casual games from the ps2, which they could have at least made them look different. lips looks just like singstar, and their in the movies looks like it came from one of the first gen eye toy games. come on microsoft, i mean, i enjoyed fallout3, fable 2, gears of war 2, and resident evil 5, but there was nothing new.
notice all the games above are sequels too?
I just wanted to share my opinion.
but i do like the netflix stuff.

@munkeypants: I dunno why, but reading your post reminded me of this theory I had...
If this is the same No-Chiefy-Protagonist game that we discussed yesterday or whenever, I think it could be a rescue mission of sorts: The Distress Signal sent out by Cortana gets picked up, a ship is sent out to recover the back end of the Dawn, and they find themselves on an alien planet trying to recover their greatest war hero. That could make for a fun (and innovative, if Bungie gets the chance) tactical fps. Thoughts?

Now is a good time for them to do another if they're going to.
They've got an engine and all the assets from Halo 3 to work with, so if they're wanting to continue to the story, they could get it done quick and still have excellent graphics by current standards.

@mentalboy11: Well, I semi-agree; they aren't taking huge risks, and therefore won't ever achieve or lose very much at all, they'll just hold their ground. At the same time, however, they ARE innovating in minor ways, expanding on what has already become a success. Take Lips, for example; sure, it's out there to compete with Singstar, but, it A) adds some sort of motion control that might be fun, not sure though and B) bringing what seems to be a more American selection of songs. It's not complete originality, but they ARE being smart.
I thought that the movie game thing looked pretty fun, and might be a lot deeper than it originally appeared; just realize it's geared toward stealing some of the Wii's thunder.

Posted 8:57 PM 16/7/08
@mentalboy11: Meh. MS isn't the only company to steal ideas. I'd say the only things truly innovative this gen have been XBL (be able to download trailers, demos, shows, movies, music, and whatnots) and the Wiimote. And personally I don't really care for the Wiimote that much. It seems like the only games on the Wii are shovelware and Nintendo franchises that we've been playing for 20 years now.
@Vanguarde: Obviously they won't be forced to make Halo games till the end of time.. MS doesn't own them anymore. This game might have been part of the split agreement, or maybe Bungie just wanted to make another game in the Halo universe (shocking I know!).
Although personally I was hoping for something new. But I don't really see that plumber guy having anything to do with Halo. So my guess is they're making 2 games at once.

I don't think it will be a straight up Halo 4 to be honest. For Bungie to want to break away from MS for freedom and then just make another Halo with the same engine, a few new weapons, a few new enemies, etc. but the same basic gameplay formula that Halo 1-3 shared would be stupid.
It may very well be "in the Halo universe", but I personally doubt it will be Halo 4. The game will most likely play much differently.

But as for this, I was looking forward to whatever Bungie was working on, Halo related or not. And looking over that Variety article it seems to put everything into focus as Halo Wars seems to have been shoved into the back burner and Chronicles has gone through yet another press conference without a scrap of info.
Whatever happened between the two companies isn't healthy and the only people getting hurt are the fans.

This is good news because:
1) As someone else stated, Bungie is entirely more than capable at producing more than one game at a time now
2) The "Master Chief" story is wrapped up for now, meaning not only will the new game have a new story, but this also gives Bungie the opportunity to try a different genre of game, such as the rumored squad-based marine game
I am looking forward to whatever it is though, Bungie makes quality games, with or without the Halo title

@Archaotic: Halo is paying the bills so that Bungie can do other things. The announced project for today is something different. They are working on more than one project at the moment - at least one is NOT Halo-related.
They broke away for two reasons:
1. They wanted the freedom to do things other than Halo (they are.)
2. They wanted more fredom (and presumably profit) from the Halo franchise. (Check.)
They never said they weren't going to do more Halo. People that assumed they would just walk away from the hundreds of millions of dollars associated with another Halo game are just naive. They are a business, after all.

All I wanted is a new IP now that Bungie is somewhat free to do whatever they want, but that won't happen soon, so I take this is gonna degenerate into a situation not unlike recording artists pissed off with their contracts, 3 more "make the publisher happy" games and then a big fuck you, see ya later.

Seriously those who think that there are to many Halo games can shove it. How many fucking final fantasy games are there? or Mario games? Mega man? Sonic? and don't get me started on
As for people who want a chief-less halo. Well, I suppose I could understand it to an extent. but honestly why do you want one so badly? Its like asking for a Mario game where there is no Mario and you play as a koopa.
and honestly I don't see why there is so much hate for sequels. After all "Whats in a name?". to understand what I'm going for here tell me the differences between 2 average JRPG games with completely different names versus the differences from CoD2 to CoD4. or RE1, 2, & 3 versus 4 and the upcoming 5?

@IMarcus:
"I can haz Rainbox Six Halo?!"
But that would be awesome. Look at the AI in Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, Call of Duty, etc. It's virtually non-existant. Their trigger points and monster closets are so friggin transparent that any and all fun and immersion is sucked out of the games.
COD5, for example. 4-player co-op. How is that going to work without completely revamping the spawn patterns and infinately respawning enemies? Not well. I'd imagine my sniper friend dishing out 20 headshots while covering us only to realize that the enemies are spawning to no end because we didn't cross an invisible line. That's turn-this-game-off-now kinds of sloppy and that's what I'd imagine COD5 will be (I'll definately try it).
Bungie has great AI for their enemies and they hide triggers and spawns VERY well.
Rainbow Six? Terrorist Hunt mode. Is it too much to ask that you NOT spawn a terrorist infront of me, Ubi? You come to realize why that cleared room is suddenly filled with terrorist life despite the fact that all enterances were covered when terrorists appear out of the f'n blue.
I just think that if Bungie approaches a squad based game where you control a bunch of marines, helljumpers, whatever, it could be awesome. They know AI. They know spawning. Their weapons are great. Coming across an Elite or Brute as a 5'10" marine would be a totally different experiance than doing it as a half-ton (or whatever they're supposed to weigh) Spartan. Hell, it'd probably be closer to stumbling across a Big Daddy than anything else.
I guess if no one else can do squad-based shooters without half-assing it, why not try one of the most acclaimed devs of recent time behind one of the best selling shooters of recent time and see if maybe someone shows Ubi and the rest of them how to do it right?

I'm actually kind of bored by the news, but I'm not against it. Bungie are certainly talented enough to develop more than one game at a time-- in fact, they confirmed a while ago that they had multiple teams running, so I doubt it's going to be a huge deal. The Halo fans are going to be grateful for a new in-universe game and the people who just want to see what Bungie are capable of (like me) are going to be excited about Pimps at Sea actually being, you know, a game about pimps. Who happen to be doing pimpish activities while at sea. Oh, discovering that wasn't just a Blue Harvest-esque placeholder title would be so awesome.

My dream for this game would be the Chief and Cortana, stranded alone on the (Forerunner?) planet as seen at the end of H3. A third-person adventure game, with elements beyond straight shooting and vehicle-use. Puzzles, survival, exploration, all that stuff. The Halo series has turned into a large-scale marine buddy-fest. Bring it back down to Master Chief, by himself. A revived focus on the story and atmosphere so fans (and naysayers) can see the richness of the Halo universe would also be a must.

WOW, Luke... That's some poor grammar you've got going on.
Watch out for the past tense and present tense usage.

@Archaotic: they never said they were tired of halo, they just said now they have options to do what they wanted.
if this is what they wanted...
and don't forget about ol' plunger boy or whatever.
he surely doesn't look like he belongs amongst the ranks of the ODST.

@lionkitten: Amen to Online-Only-Super-Halo. They could even keep that as the name and it would sell 8 million copies.
