Burnout Paradise Getting PS3 Trophy Support (Someday)
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 6:40 AM on July 2, 2008
The confirmed list of Trophy-ready PlayStation 3 games may not blow your hair back, but at least one more third-party title is pledging support for the 2.40 firmware feature -- Burnout Paradise. Simon Phipps, designer at Criterion Games, writes on the PlayStation.blog that Trophies are coming, but not in the Codename: Cagney update.
Best part? "Trophies will be retroactive, so, if you've achieved something today, the day the update arrives (not Cagney, we want to emphasise) that will be reflected in your Trophies", Phipps writes in the post's comments. Nice!

@Fox:
Got mine yesterday :D
This is one of the games I want, and now I don't have to bother waiting for it to update its trophies system before I buy and play it.

All I've got to say is that I'm glad I just picked up a PS3 recently.

@bangbangblah: i couldn't agree more. i wouldn't want someone taking a save just to get trophies. i don't want to start seeing trophy whores everywhere. but criterion was prepare so this rules. i don't think i would have the patience to do all the races again...

@hungry_for_worms: I think they're trying to make them unique. Unique for PS3 and 360 means more sales.

@VixDiesel: I agree. Nothing's going to aggrevate me more than seeing other people having trophies for things I've done but was never rewarded for.

i seriously wouldn't want to have to replay games i already got 100% on so this is very nice that they're doing this. Otherwise I think trophies would annoy me more than anything forcing me to replay ALL my games.

shouldnt take devs any extra time to implement it. if they've worked on 360 games(game saves tied to gamertag/profile) then they should be able to implement it in future games pretty easily.

@JacoD: Yeah, it's the only reason they can do it, since it's impossible to download a save with %100 of trophies or anything. I actually hope more developer's take this route, I don't like the idea of downloading someone else's save.

Retroactive seems dumb.Isnt the point of achievements to get more play/replay value out of your games? Well maybe its not the point, but isnt that the only positive to come out of achievements?

burnout so far is the only one retroactive since save files are user specific. can't fricken wait.

Ah, gamesaves are locked to the person. Well.

@Maxilicious: I think BP is the only one right now... only because the gamesaves are locked to person.

I can almost guarantee the Orange Box won't get patched in part to EA's laziness and the jackasses in Valve.

Im kinda glad that game trophies aren't going to be retroactive on most games... besides the cheating element (which would piss me off more than having to replay the same old games) it gives me an excuse to pick up and dust off games that Id otherwise probably not play again for a long time... and hey, I might finally start playing team fortress if they patch orange box to include trophies!
I can picture a few games going retroactive... Resistance fall of man had accomplishments, and they where saved to the system, not the save file, so perhaps they'll be activated, if not, I don't mind doing them again!
think back to the good old days... how many times did you play through metal gear solid? zelda? final fantasy? quake? you didnt need the justification of achievement points to validate your multiple playthroughs.... stop being so commercially minded, people!

Good move on their part. This gives hope for some of us that would rather not go through hell again for other games. As long as GTA4 gets some retroactive trophies then all is forgiven. Otherwise I don't really care about playing some of my games over again.

@TheIrishNinja: Most of the trophies are already there, all they have to do is make a bunch of new good ones. For example:
"Bag Bandit - Grab the crotches of over 50 soldiers in one playthrough"
"Remember me, Snake? - Trigger every flashback"
"OH MY GOD, HOTNESS! I WANNA BANG YOU! - Play through the entire game wearing the mask of one of the BB unit women."
I just thought I'd throw that out there.

Nice. I take it that the Paradise Awards will become Trophies in the update? I already unlocked like eight.

is it true you can just download the saved games of someone else and you get trophies without even playing the games properly? pretty useless 'achievement' system if it works like that.

i was annoyed at the lack of retroactivity but i totally understand why. games that have user specific saves, i hope the dev's patch in retroactive trophies.

I was annoyed at first that games adding trophies wouldn't be retroactive until Sony explained why, which to me made a lot of sense. However I've invested a lot of time in Burnout Paradise and to learn that a) Criterion is planning trophies (likely just a duplicate of already available in-game achievements) and b) they'll be retroactive makes this bit of new quite awesome.

sweeet, I wonder if more games will take this route. They really should...
What stops someone from downloading a saved game file? or is that not possible?

@Amazon_Chris: Such a shame too. Amazing game and the 360 achievements were the most fun I've ever seen a game have. (Riding with my gnome!)
But that game was really just to cash in for them. The glitches coupled with the cold shoulder from both EA and Valve leaves me a very sad boy.

Well the retroactivity grows...i was wondering if burnout would be one of the chosen few a couple weeks back when 2.40 was just a twinkle in the eye of sony.

I hope alot of devs patch 2.40 support into their games. and games coming out in the future, cross platform games for sure, will support it.

@YourAnthony: apparently the trophies will be associated with your PSN name, not with the gamesave, so if you do get a gamesave off the internet then it won't unlock extra trophies. thats what I discerned from the FAQ on the playstation blog anyway...
though it does mean that you have access to your trophies regardless of what machine you are logged into, and you can delete your gamesaves without worry. and yay. no cheating!
