Capcom Keeps RE5 Nice And Gruesome
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 3:20 PM on July 24, 2008
With the ratings spotlight seeming to sharpen on gory games these days, will we see any sanitation in beloved horror titles, say, Resident Evil 5?
Not to worry, Capcom told MCV:
"We're never going to create a gore-free Resident Evil title to try and get a lower rating as it's a game about the horror experience and gore is part of that," said Rhys Cash, Capcom UK's research and planning manager.
"We're primarily about making great games and if it's appropriate to the title we won't shy away from making a 15+ or 18+ title.
What if Sega president Simon Jeffery's wagging tongue is actually a prophecy foretelling the advent of RE5 to the family-friendly Wii?
"As we've shown with Resident Evil 4 Wii and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles there's still a market for more mature titles even on these formats."
Cash also said Capcom sees no need to "shy away" from adult content, but that he feels the wariness about shock value indicates not a prudishness on the part of the industry, but rather a desire for more complex content instead of gore for its own sake.

I don't know about you but all these pushing xfiles adds are getting on my nerves. Don't worry, australia doesn't have much of a problem with over the top violence, just drugs or anything that has to do with loooooooove. Still a rather large 'sexy land superstore' is not too far from my home, and oh my the things you can buy there, would turn michael atkinson white and have him crying for the lord to cover his eyes!! That's legal and makes perfect sense? right?

@elevenoverzero: Only in Japan, but so did the GC version. Laws there about thsi stuff are VERY strict.
I wanna see Dead Rising on the Wii first, running with the (Updated?) RE4 engine. Im sure they cant shoe horn RE5 into the engine adn tell the same story with limitations on the thecnical side. Yu knwo what? Id rather buy RE5 on the Wii then buy a new 360/PS3. Why? I cant afford them. Simple math, eh?

Eww MK on the Genesis is SO dated now the graphics and sound are awful I can't play it any more, unless i'm just after a cheap laugh
I'll stick to the Arcade versions on the PS2 special editions, thankyou!
*high hopes for MK vs DC*

@Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc: I don't know their proper name but I know when you go into the sewers or like.. the underground, there's those invisible bugs. They grab you and spew acid at your face. It's hard to get killed by, but I wanted to see what it would looked like.
To my dismay.. It was one of the most gruesome things I've seen in a video game. Leon's face half melted and his eye somewhat sticking out... Oh god.
@Chances: Really? On my VHS tape of Raiders it says 14A (Canadian rating system, I guess)

change gore to sweat in which Nintendo did in the past and I chose Sega Genesis with mortal kombat blood.

Even if they port it to the Wii with lower quality graphics I'll still be buying it, ESPECIALLY if they give it the same control scheme that RE4 for the Wii had. That was brilliant. It'd also be really nice if they worked in the Motionplus. 1:1 would certainly make for even more solid gameplay for sure. Headshots are the FUTUUUUUUREE!!!
I'm praying right now that they got the head explosions right. Ever since I played RE2 for Playstation(the first 3D game I ever played) that has been a staple of Resident Evil games that I just couldn't go without. the satisfying, gore filled, splattery awesomeness of the head explosion. If I don't see some seriously gruesome head explosions in RE5 I will be very disappointed.
I think RE5 will do well even if they do get an AO rating. I know I'm going to be buying it for all systems it comes out on.

Naw, Capcom will be too busy fighting accusations of so called racism in the game than to worry about the gore content. :D

@elevenoverzero: Nope. Far as I recall, if you get in too close to Chainsaw-bagface-guy, and you get chainsawed, turtleneck sweaters will never fit right again.

Yeah Cash, you guys in the U.K might be cool with keeping the game uncut to preserve how it was originally intended to be shown (because the BBFC is real open-minded), but get slapped with an AO rating by the ESRB here in the states for excessive gore/violence, and we'll see how quick Capcom are going to be about not cutting corners to get a lower rating. An Adults Only rating for a home console game equates to death here.

@Pattypie: PG and PG-13 movies have always had their fair share of gross stuff. What was Indiana Jones rated back in the day? It had face melting, and it was PG.
Anyway, keeping Resident Evil gross is deeply, deeply important. I remember playing on my friend's PS1 a long-ass time ago and being thoroughly unimpressed with everything until he told me to select the magnum.
Exploding zombie heads? You just made a customer.

If something like Mad World can be slated for release on the Wii surely RE5, which would almost certainly sell more, can be as well.

@Pattypie: Which acid bugs? The things that ate your head? I remember those guys with the wolverine claws, where their hits weren't instant kills, but if they did kill you they had a custom kill animation where they impaled you.

Meh, Now that I have one of the 2 other systems as well I can play this game without fear of it not showing up on my console.

Of course there is still a market on the Wii for more mature games, not everyone who has a Wii intends to play games aimed at the kids or the family unit.
I know the majority of Wii owners do play casual games but at least someone realises, out there in the crowd of Wii owners is someone looking for a proper game, a small fact Nintendo have seemed to forget.

"it's a game about the horror experience and gore is part of that"
PART. Cut back on the action a little bit there Capcom. Make me live in fear of zombies again.
@Cogito:
Yeah, it's weird how that works. I never hear video game developers say they're shooting for a T rated game so that they can appeal to a wider audience. I don't know why though.

" a desire for more complex content instead of gore for its own sake."
Excellent. Gore used correctly is horror inducing. Gore over used for sheer shock value, is first nausiating, then distacting, then it becomes numbing.

PG-13 movies are gory and bad enough, anyone see Dark Knight? THAT was PG-13, hard to believe.
Good, part of the shock and horror of RE4 was the gruesome deaths. Like everytime Leon got his head chopped off with a chainsaw I turned off the Gamecube because I did not want to see it. And when those acid bugs kill you.. Ugh.. So.. gross.

That's some good logic right there. Now, if only we could convince Hollywood to make R-rated movies, and not dumb them down to PG-13 to appeal to a "wider audience."

I honestly don't know which version of this game I would buy, Wii or 360. I played RE4 on the Gamecube for quite a while, but I beat it on the Wii. Does anybody sometimes feel like it was more fun on the Gamecube, when you had to wrestle with the controls until you could pull off that shot to the knee or face? On the Wii, well, it was almost like hunting deer with AK-47's. Lots to think about...

I would love for there to be an adult rated game that is meant to be played by adults and adults only. It's completely up to the discretion of the consumer whether to play the game or not. That would cut out that ESRB mess. I would buy this or any other adult themed game online. Even if just to bypass the hoopla surrounding where an 18 and over game could be sold.
For some inexplicable reason some adults find adult content offensive...yet no one asks or forces them to participate. No one makes you smoke cigarettes, or eat foods that will kill you; games are the same way. If you can't take it then don't deal with it, but don't keep me from doing something because you can't.
I can't dunk a basketball, but you don't see me out there trying to get people to change the sport.

@Shiryu:
Resident evil 5 uses that engine on it's native platforms.
Watch the gameplay videos and notice the bullet reaction and death animations. Hell, even the running animations are directly ripped from resident evil 4.
This "updated" engine is really just resident evil 4+sharper textures+lots and lots of bloom.
I have a feeling this is capcom's "staple" engine nowadays.
