10 bucks says they use whatever engine they are using for the new Dragon Quest IV on the DS. It would only make sense from the art perspective and from what I have seen, DQIV looks a lot better then the FF remakes, so that would make me very ok with this. Although I still also would rather have a next gen remake, but it could be a direct port and I would buy it again.

The only game I could ever see that happen with is maybe Final Fantasy 7, but that's probably due to years of dealing with delusional fanboys online. Look at how long Final Fantasy XIII, Grand Turismo, and Metal Gear were in development for. Years of labor and millions of dollars for a remake just doesn't make any sense.

Why release the game for nine bucks (price of Super Mario RPG in Japan) when you can release it for the DS and charge $35 or $40? I'm pretty sure their fan base is rabid enough to pay for both, but apparently Square doesn't feel the same.

@Krondonian: I've been wondering that myself. I never had an SNES or PS1, so I haven't played the game before.

The same goes for a lot of the Final Fantasy titles. I've heard from more than a few people that the remakes are the "wrong" way to play the game, but I can't afford eBay prices for a SNES and working copies of all of the Square RPGs, and still haven't managed to come across them at a garage sale or thrift store. So far, that's been enough to keep me from giving these games a shot.

@TheCleaningGuy: Have ANY of Square's games been "direct ports with extras?"

The game almost definitely be remade, and there's a chance it might be botched in the process (as the FFIV GBA port apparently was).

@Diddy_Mao: If the internet reaction to just about any mention of Chrono Trigger or sales of the PS1 games weren't reason enough to make a new game in the series, I doubt this would be. It's probably just going to be another one-off remake.

@Krondonian: no real characterization, but plot involved time travel and between level/monster design, the music, the (then) new ability to replay the game with your stats to see another of its multiple endings - the game was just a lot of fun is the thing.
You could avoid fights, but they were quick if you didnt, and combos made em fun...again, most fun i had with a J-RPG this side of Earthbound in its day.

Yeah, I still own the original cars for FF6 and CT. Manuals too, although they're looking a tad ratty by now because of how many times I've played those games to hell and back. I think I've beaten Chrono Trigger around 20 or 30 times on the same save.

I've played plenty of games on my DS, trust me. I just don't like touch control because it hurts me, and I really don't like playing games aimed towards a younger audience. Tactics Advance 2 makes my brain hurt because the gameplay is SO hardcore, but the plot is so damn candy-store juvenile...why couldn't they have just written a real story like the original game? Is it that hard to try to appeal to 20-year-olds?

I'm not a fan of touch controls at all. I have carpal tunnel syndrome, and that stuff hurts my arm like crazy.

The only games I enjoy on the DS are the games that don't use the stylus at all. Like Jump Superstars, Phoenix Wright, New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, etc. I don't play things with mandatory stylus control because they cause me actual physical pain.

And frankly, I just don't like the visuals in the FF remakes for the DS. If CT follows that trend, it'll be just as ugly. I don't see how that's an unfair belief to have, especially considering what a work of art the original game was.

oh, wanted to add - i dont count the PSX remake. yes, the animation was a great add, loved it, but couldnt make it through the game, cause that loading time between fights just kills me.
i know it sounds like nitpicking, but when you're so used to the cart loading through the RAM or whatever and not having to wait, the game plays seamlessly and the wait becomes unbearable. it just reeks of bad porting to me, there was no excuse for it back then, and it just feels worse loading it up on my ps3 now.

I have a copy of Chrono Trigger sitting less than three feet from me, believe me, I love the game just as much as anyone here. I'm not griping about the remake, though, because if it turns out to be something I'm not into, I can just stop reading news about it and not buy it. Problem solved - my memories of the game don't end up 'botched' (I doubt they would be even if I bought the remake) and I'd still 'respect' one of gaming's classics.

Don't get me wrong, I love the thing (I own both a PSP and a DS), but games are what define the system, and if you don't consider the DS a 'real system', it's hard for me to think you're defining the systems by anything other than their visuals. The remakes aren't "for" anyone - unless it's going to be a title sold via download, you can't design a game to appeal solely to those two groups. Ignoring all other factors, those two groups mean that Square would be trying to appeal to either the crowd of 20 and up older gamers, and anyone who's 13 years old or younger (nine, if we're going to include the PS1 remake).

You've just cut out the lucrative teenage boy market. Beyond that, the new Star Wars movies (I'm looking at you, Jar-Jar) have taught me that it can be exceedingly difficult to appeal to kids and adults at the same time, even if logic says you should be able to.

Chrono Trigger is one of the few 2D RPGs I've played and actually finished. (I didn't grow up playing them...)
I think having RPGs on the DS is a really neat thing because you can take them anywhere, which is especially good if you spend a lot of time away form your home console like me.

@Archaotic:If a artstyle which was and is much a part of SE..and RPG's as a whole turns you off that much, then by god, don't play it. There are many of us who's manhood is not threatened by such things who will be glad to take your copy and whatever promo goodness that comes with it when the preorders open.

If your the reason SE's shifted over in style from FF7 on, then I blame you for the reason there's not a FF9 remake yet or why most of SE'S 16 bit powerhouses still haven't been looked at in years.

I hope they do a quality job. The PS2 port was terrible, and the GBA FF ports did not sound nearly as good as the SNES. I traded in FF6 a week after buying it because of it's outright inferiority to the original. I may like the DS FFIV remake ok, but I still think nice 2D trumps PS1 era 3D.

I'm going to buy the FFIV remake--it's still one of my favorite games, and if they make an FFVI remake, ditto for that--but I would prefer more of the new characters/gameplay than remakes, regardless, unless it's something that wasn't previously available.

I know they added a little to it, but couldn't they have left it sprite-based or at least not used chibis? It just feels so damn pandering, and it's pandering to the wrong people. Final Fantasy fans aren't kids anymore.

It's why six people team up after all even when they don't like each other, even when one of them stabs the other in the back two-three times, yet is there for the final march towards the end of the game.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 1 and 2 are just insanely childish games, man. You've played them, I assume, so I'm not gonna spell it out in excessive detail, but the tone and feel of those games is just very...kid-ish. @Dave Silva: Don't worry about the music. The DS has superior sound compared to both the SNES and the N64 I believe, but most certainly more than the SNES. The GBA had superior graphics to the SNES but inferior sound. So don't worry about the music quality.

One of the biggest things that annoyed/depressed me about Cross was all the effort that the three had put into in Trigger went completely and utterly to waste (Granted those were time ghosts and likely not the real spirts of Chrono/Marle/Lucca, etc) and things were even worse off then before.

We'll see. Myself I'd just like a bonus dungeon to grind in because once you unlocked New Game+, even fighting Larvos head on head though all 13 of his forms was a joke.

If they can at least show just how Magus's sister ended up becoming bonded to a Lavos spawn and give a chance to avoid that (zomg Chrono Cross spoilzers) i'd be happy. Even if it's just a dump of the PSone disk with little add ons, i'd be happy really, because the PSone remake is still largely the biggest half ass effort i've seen other then "Mega Man Anniversary Collection."
