Dark Sector Devs Helping With Bioshock PS3
Posted by Brian Crecente at 1:40 AM on July 4, 2008
Digital Extremes, the team behind such mediocre titles as Dark Sector, Pariah and Extreme Pinball, have signed on to help optimise Bioshock for the Playstation 3. To be fair, DE did also produce the fair to middling Unreal Tournament 2003, and they do have a way with death frisbees.
The game is still behind developed by 2K Marin, 2K Boston and 2K Australia, so it's unclear how much impact the inclusion of a fourth cook in the kitchen will actually have on the game.
"When 2K approached us to assist with development on BioShock for the PLAYSTATION 3 system, it was a no-brainer", said James Schmalz, CEO and founder of Digital Extremes. "You really can't ask for a more exciting, technically impressive world to work in than Rapture, and the incredible knowledge and talent between the 2K studios and our team at Digital Extremes is unprecedented. The collaboration on this project will make the PLAYSTATION 3 system sing with Big Daddy goodness and Little Sister 'thank you's'".
Just so they don't top their chorus off with Hayden Tenno emo sucktitude, it'll be fine.
2K Games Announces Partnership with Digital Extremes
Premier Development Studio Tapped to Optimise BioShock® for the PLAYSTATION®3 System
New York, NY - July 3, 2008 - 2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), announced today that it has signed an agreement with Digital Extremes to assist in the development of BioShock® for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. Shipping to retailers in October 2008 with new features and content, the PLAYSTATION 3 system version of BioShock is being developed by 2K Marin, 2K Boston, 2K Australia and Digital Extremes.
"By partnering with Digital Extremes, 2K Games is delivering a fully optimised experience that takes advantage of the PLAYSTATION 3 system hardware," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "Bringing Digital Extremes on board allows us to continue to deliver the best experience possible to our fans."
Headquartered in London, Ontario, Digital Extremes brings more than 15 years of experience as one of the gaming industry's premier developers. Digital Extremes pioneered technological and graphical design within the video gaming industry as the co-creators of Epic Games' Unreal® franchise. Using the experience it gained from working on the recently released Dark Sector®, Digital Extremes is partnering with the 2K studios to help optimise BioShock's performance on the PLAYSTATION 3 system.
"When 2K approached us to assist with development on BioShock for the PLAYSTATION 3 system, it was a no-brainer," said James Schmalz, CEO and founder of Digital Extremes. "You really can't ask for a more exciting, technically impressive world to work in than Rapture, and the incredible knowledge and talent between the 2K studios and our team at Digital Extremes is unprecedented. The collaboration on this project will make the PLAYSTATION 3 system sing with Big Daddy goodness and Little Sister 'thank you's'."
BioShock is a narrative-driven action experience that allows players to do the impossible as they journey through an amazing, immersive and terrifying world. Caught between powerful forces and hunted down by genetically mutated citizens, the player will come to grips with the mysterious and fascinating world of Rapture, a distinct Art Deco underwater utopia gone mad. BioShock not only challenges players' capacity to adapt and survive, but brings to question their values and commitment to the inhabitants of Rapture. With smart and adaptive AI, no encounter ever plays out the same, while numerous customisation options provide gamers with an experience that adapts to their playing style.
BioShock for the PLAYSTATION 3 system will be available in October 2008 and is not yet rated by the ESRB. For additional details, visit www.bioshockgame.com.

@AndrewG009: I loved the trailer that featured the taiko drum score and the very elegant stylish armored characters.
I played the demo and bit of the full game and decided just like Pariah the graphics are good, but somewhere they just miss on making something a compelling story/game.
The graphics were very good.
I think they are technically competent, and I think since they have experience in this area they are a perfectly decent choice for assisting the port. I doubt they will have creative input.

@Fangeh: You are correct - if it looks the same side by side to the human eye, it's fine with me. Unfortunately, Dark Sector did not, it produced a more blurry and unsharpened image on the PS3. Quite similar to GTA IV to be honest. As far as I'm concerned, this blur filter is applied in post-processing to hide the jaggies that the lower resolution and lack of AA make apparent. It's not a good option if you didn't guess it by now.
Besides, I think this is as on-topic as can be; it's about Dark Sector, BioShock, respective developers, games and the PS3. :)

@Candlejack: It's hard to say how much more work it takes to get the PS3 version of a game looking on-par with a 360 game; can't do anything other than speculate really. I always remember the CoD4 devs saying they were putting their best programmers on the PS3 version. It's a question of how many resources a developer wants to use for one version of the game over the other. If they can get both games to the point where you really have to compare the two side by side or have a preexisting hard-on for antialiasing to tell the difference, then I personally won't point to programmer laziness.
Last comment from me on this as it's not on topic

I thought it was a good game, good enough to buy it again or buy the sequel, I only traded it in for MGS4. I think they should be a good help with Bioshock since it isn't being made for the 360 at the same time, they should be able to exploit the PS3's abilities better working with 2K

@Fangeh: Why not? I think I can blame both Rockstar and these devs to be honest. Sorry if I'm stepping on somebodies toes by saying that, but Heavenly Sword was a really early title and pulled of 1280x720 with 4xAA easily and had more shit going on at times than Dark Sector (especially) and GTA.
I'm not saying GTA IV didn't look great on both systems, I'm just saying that developers aren't putting in the extra effort for PS3 games when they go multi platform. There are ways to work around the inability of the RSX to render FSAA and HDR at the same time which MGS, Heavenly Sword etcetera have proven.

Wow, between Epic and this group, it would seem that Epic has done a little bit better for themselves. I wasn't a fan of Dark Sector at all, mainly because I'm super tired of anti-heroes. But it's not like they'll be doing anything drastic to Bioshock anyways, so Andrew Ryan won't get mopier or anything like that.

Seriously, why couldn't they have approached a first party developer that know what they're doing, i.e. Insomniac and/or Naughty Dog.
Insomniac already have their hilariously named "Nocturnal Iniative" to make their resources available to other developers.
Love or hate Drake's Fortune, it was a spectacular feat considering it was Naughty Dog's first foray into the PS3 hardware. I think they definitely have the knowhow to help Bioshock live up to, and possibly surpass, the 360 experience.

Yet, from what I just read they have "2K Marin, 2K Boston, 2K Australia and Digital Extremes" working on it. @everyone else: UT3 PS3 was fine- as good as every other version. Any of it's failings were due to the original material. So they ported UT3 just fine and made their own good, but not groundbreaking, game. I haven't played Pariah. So, that's a pretty decent track record. If anything, you have to admit, they have proven that they can handle the PS3 hardware.

It may not have been the greatest game, but it had some technical and design achievements that I wouldn't call mediocre at all.

Yeah, Bioshock wasn't mediocre at all: It featured rehashed FPS combat with new fangled 'special abilities' and lots of 'Press A to get cash from the drawer'.
However could the developers of a third-person combat system rivaling that of Gears of War and RE4, combined with a superior and more integrated version of Heavenly Sword's aftertouch controls and an expertly implemented learning and upgrade curve?
Oh yeah! They could help them craft a game onto that story of theirs!
Having 'one of those days' or what Crecente? Maybe I'm missing the sly journo humour, but I'd hate to see someone such as yourself hop on the hate bandwagon for a game that did nothing but deliver on all of its promises. And with all of its promises being to combine three AAA titles into one new game, that's a tall order. And they delivered.
And what was wrong with UT 2003 back in 2003? Were you busy playing another arena shooter? I know a lot of developers who would have loved to have worked on a UT title.
