Day of Defeat: Source Gets Steam Achievements, New Map
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:30 AM on July 3, 2008
If there's one company that knows how to extend the life out of a game, it's Valve. Case in point? The new Day of Defeat: Source update that just hit. Yeah, remember that game? The Palermo Update, as it's called, brings a slew of goodies that Team Fortress 2 players have been enjoying for a while now, including 51 new Steam Achievements, more detailed player stats and Steam Community features. Even more bonus? The new "Palermo" map and a new, post-kill freeze cam.
Personally, my favourite thing about the new update is that it reminds me that Day of Defeat: Source exists. It's like getting a free game! Again. More details at the official update page.

Is this game slower paced than Red Orchestra?
Red Orchestra is tooooo... slowly paced. I need something thats a mix of TF2 and CS.

I haven't touched DOD:S in a while. I received it & HL2DM with my purchase of CS:S. I better go look for some purdyyy weapon skins [until my Internet connection starts to improve and I can play some multiplayer games again T_T]

Well, the achievements anyway. :P

I haven't played Day of Defeat for about a year. I started with the first and was kind of done with it. Now with achievements...well they got me back into TF2 as well.
To be honest I like Valve achievements better than XBL achievements. I don't get points, but they're a lot more fun. I think of them as mini-missions, and what Valve has produced feel like it. Getting a million kills in Gears feels like a thankless job.

Its been in public beta for a little over a month now
They also tightened the Cone of fire for pretty much every gun, making them less random and pretty much removing my only complaint

A pretty warning for you guys:
At least 23 servers are online, and if you're trying to play in Palermo, you wind up in a full server.

I think that developer's should focus more on updating existing content instead of just pushing new pieces to their next iteration. Given Valve's development time, I guess it isn't as feasible to have new maps promised for DoD:S II - Dawn of Victory, but even companies that do tend to focus more on pushing the product to shelves need to take heed.
Look at what Criterion is doing for the Burnout series. A scheduled and relatively meaty set of updates for Paradise City is making the game continually hop back into my 360 just to get a few rotations.

@wild homes is weathering cephalopod trouble!: I agree, There lies-in the difference between the companies. Mr. Lombardi was smart enough to pounce on the community mods and saw the potential of Steam and its cafe/personal accounts.
Repetition till the mass of consumer is oblivious to the small changes. Big profit and a happy Valve/Steam/Users ecosystem.

@PsycheE: Sure, that's one way to look at it, and you're certainly right-- but other companies have turned their backs on the audience in more distinct ways than that, and continue to. So while it's certainly logical that Valve act as they did, it's also not an uncommon enough thing that they could've made the opposite choice.

In other news, Palermo is fun to say.

@wild homes is weathering cephalopod trouble!:
They have no choice. The community MODs for all their games kept Valve's boat afloat till Steam found its place.
It would be the biggest douchery if Valve ignored its community after it netted them millions upon millions. Counter-Strike definitely kept the Valve name going well after HL1 fanfare died off.

Way to go, Valve. I hope other publishers would put more focus on keeping a healthy relationship with the community-- it's certainly served these guys very, very well. Sometimes you have to weigh the costs of doing something-- and Valve will never recoup these costs in a monetary way-- against the benefits of having a fanbase that would do anything for you and your games.

Love this game. I played some of the Beta of this new update and it's pretty slick. Some people moan about it being too TF2-ish, but really if it wasn't moved to the latest version of Source we wouldnt see any support for it at all.

Haven't played the source version but been wanting to, now's a good reason.
Recently got back into Counter-Strike (source) again and really enjoying it. It's odd that I've played many of the more recent multiplayer games like Battlefield XXX, UTK7, Quake Wars, COD4... but none of these have the addictiveness, stealthy-ness (knife kill) or the so pissed off feeling when you got head-shot 3x of Counter-Strike
Been playing on 64.69.38.35:27015 (west coast) as zzt711, great server!

I love DoD. The original, note this one, but thats because it fairs poorly on my machine and it does not have as much content as the original (wich I still go play when I find a populated server from time to time).
Ill have to fire up STEAM when I get home to check out Palermo.

the weapons seemed improved in the beta (although that's not saying much considering how bad they were) but i hate everything they added from TF2. the sounds, the freeze-cam, the particle effects, they all seem completely out of place in a ww2 game; it's like the veterans walking up to the menin gate for the last post only to start playing yakkety sax on their bugles.
and palermo is one of the worst (non-orange) customs i've played for dod:s, even though the original, dod_railroad for pre-source, was one of the best. then again i'd also rank 3.1b as the best ww2 game i've ever played and dod:s as by far the worst game full stop.

DoD:S, for whatever reason, has never been able to capture that magic of the original DoD. Maybe it's because war games have outgrown CS-style multiplayer... I don't know. Still, I spent years playing the original DoD, and I just can't get into DoD:S. I hopped in last night to see if maybe I needed to give it another chance. Sadly, no.
