Dead Rising 2 Set in Vegas ?
Posted by Brian Crecente at 8:02 AM on July 10, 2008
You may remember that back in February McWhertor wrote up a rumour that Dead Rising 2 would be developed by a Western developer. Specifically, McWhertor wrote that development duties for the game have been handed over to Vancouver-area third-party Blue Castle Games.
Well, like a zombie, a good rumour is hard to kill. We've just gotten tipped off from yet another source that yes the folks behind The Bigs for 2K Sports are in fact the team working on the Dear Rising sequel. (Is that a copy of Dead Rising on their art director's desk?) Moreover, we're told that this new Dead Rising game will leave the wilds of Colourado (dammit) and venture into Las Vegas.
That's right, what's killed in Vegas doesn't stay dead in Vegas.
In their Games section, Blue Castle Games taunts visitors with redacted details about what they are working on:
We're continuing to deliver outstanding, action-oriented games with the up coming XXXX, as well as two sports related titles, XXXX XXXX and XXXX.
Our teams are having a blast working on the new games. XXXX in particular is getting a ton of buzz internally. We think it must be the XXXXXXXX aspect of XXXX XXXX that gets everyone so excited. Plus, we can't wait to see how people react to the XXXX in XXXXX .
Man, I sure hope those last set of Xs spell out Zombie Hookers in Dead Rising 2!

I borrowed dead rising from a friend after hearing nothing but good things from all over the place.
It started out pretty cool, I liked the whole photography thing and who doesnt like killing zombies. But things went downhill after I realized the hard way that it didn't feature auto-save. From there it was just a frustrating slog through clunky controls, weapons that broke after 5 hits and the worst escort quests I have ever experienced.
Maybe a new developer will deal with some of the issues I had with the first game but I'm not exactly looking forward to a sequel.

yea, if you can interact with the enviroment so much, it could be used as makeshift cover. i beat teh game, found out i actually hadn't, and when i learned the game wanted me to scavenger hunt, i never played it again. if they make a new one they need
a better map
more polished combat(specifically bosses)
maybe some kind of cover system
bosses that aren't ridiculously cheap and glitchy
a new save system
bigger text
better or no escort missions
the best thing about dead rising was fighting zombies, the problem was everything else sucked. i don't know how i would feel about western devs making it, then again most great zombie franchises came from the west.

Dead Rising just blew my mind
fantastic game
but as someone said earlier, a certain level of its charm was due to its incredibly bizarre quirkiness - which may well be lost in translation so to speak if a western developer jumps on board
zombies, crossdressing, erotic photography, otis, evil cults, mad clowns... just thinking about it makes me want to play it again

It would be so awesome if a hometown team was making DR2. The very concept of the original is what sold me on the Xbox 360 in the first place.
I think a western developer is exactly what the sequel needs. Less convoluted controls and more open-ended gameplay (plus co-op) would be a zombie-gasm.

@Woylez: So Capcom should be forgiven for a busted game because I don't own an HD tv? I am not the only one. I think that flaw was completely unforgivable. Sorry, but I don't have a few hundred bucks lying around to throw at an HD tv. Bills, they are a bitch.
I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the game, because from what I could tell the story was a real snoozer. Killing zombies was still fun, but seriously, did noone play this on a standard def tv before they sent it out the door?

@feartheraven: Add to that co-op of some sort (online, obviously), or just multiplayer in general. Wouldn't it be awesome to compete against seven other people to see who can kill the most zombies in a time limit? Or do a throwback to the original "Dawn of the Dead" and have two teams battling it out for some territory while also facing zombies. That would be . . . awesome.

One of the best games to ever come out on the 360 so far. Only real complaint was the tiny text if you didn't have an HDTV. Everything else was fine. Yes, whiners who bitch about the save system, that was fine too. Every single area in the game has a save point(except the courtyard), and considering it was survival horror, you have to work towards those parts of the mall to save. Just like Silent HIll, Resident Evil, etc. That's the "survival horror" portion of the game, you survive to reach the save points.

We wanted to focus more on the zombie slaying for this game. So we took a western style and took out the clothes options, the extra weapons you could find after replaying... Mega Man, gone. That annoying "laser sword", yeah, we cut that. Now the zombies drop weapons and health packs. We wanted to get the halo fans, so now it is in First Person. We cut out the story elements and based the whole thing in an end of the world setting, beyond the first game, we added a GTA style quest system. Some HOT COFFEE elements. None of that goofy B movie camp that fans liked either, this Dead Rising is going to be all zombie killing.
Oh, and Frank is now Gordon Freeman.

@Jeff Paine: I completely agree. Part of that charm came from the fact that it was a game set in a stereotypical American setting from a Japanese perspective. Even if it was inspired by INSERT ZOMBIE MOVIE HERE, it had a unique eastern touch that will be lost by a western development team.
Mind you, I'm not saying it'll be bad or the game will suck or that it won't have its own charm. It just won't be the same charm, really.
What if Resident Evil 1 was made by the original Alone in the Dark crew? I don't think we'd see any more Jill sandwiches, and that's just sad.

Fix the save system, I returned it after I had to go to work and tried to reload and the game had started all over.

It's a small world guys.
I actually bought an HDTV to play Dead Rising. By the time I got it I had beaten the game. In my dreams I beat Otis to death.

Unless they stick a move in this game where you can shove a spike covered baseball bat up a zombie's rectum, you can count me out....especially if the zombie was Orlando Bloom

Screw the dead rising copy - he's reading the Vagabond manga right under that! I like this guy.

I got bored of that game quickly and also it was annoying to have to go to save points instead of just saving whenever I want. I hate when games do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
