Dead Space Is About 15-20 Hours Long
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 7:40 AM on July 17, 2008
Announced back in 2007, Dead Space is 15-20 hour survival horror title from EA's Redwood Shores. "You can only run and gun it to a certain extent", says dev Alex Charlow. Players are Issac, who's equipped with mining tools as he inspects the innards of a space ship that's been overrun by alien creatures that's comprised of the flesh of the ship's dead crew. The goal is *not* simply to blast the aliens, but to strategically dismember them. "These aren't humans, you can't just shoot them in the head", says Charlow. Instead, players need to shoot off, say, different tentacles of the creatures. But be careful as they can play dead! Game drops this October.

I'm still convinced this is going to be less of a horror game and more of a horror-themed shooter. I assume they're borrowing their definition of 'mining tools' from Unreal Tournament. Oh this chaingun? That's used to er... extract ore? The rocket launcher? Oh, totally a mining tool too guys, mines the hell out of things. That laser gun over there is used primarily for digging, I can't imagine what kind of ill-balanced mind would ever consider using it as a weapon. I heard in the next colony over a dude showed up to work with it one day and just started headshotting people. They were eventually able to subdue him with the flak cannons that are used for keeping the mines clear of small rodents.

This game really seems to capture that 80s sci fi horror feel.

"strategically dismember (by) shooting" is still shooting, that means...another fps --...I'm starting to get bored of games (no I'm not, just of fps games =D).

What a bizarre thing to announce.
"Our game is going to be of average shooter length, likely on the longish side".
Mebbee it's just me, but for horror games, I hate to hear announcements about that sort of stuff.
It's mostly because it takes away from the immersion. Its like watching a horror movie. You don't want to know it's two hours long, because then you know exactly how each encounter is going to turn out. You know only the end is truly going to be climatic in any way. So you should be kept on your toes, not knowing when the end is going to come.

Which usually means it's around 8 - 10 hours long. I'll be very happy if it turns out to be a 20 hour game. We don't get enough of those lately. It's usually 6 - 8 hours or over 100 hours. I've always thought 18 - 25 hours was perfect.
I love that the aliens can "play dead." Will lead to plenty of "jump" scares.

Sounds good. I cant believe I'm excited for an EA published game. I kinda vowed I'd never ever, eeeever buy another EA game. Looks like I'm going to disapoint myself, this game just looks to damn scary & fun.

15-20 hours? Great ... just as long as it can hold yo and feel fresh through the whole game, and not feel repetitive with a 10 hours long left goal to completion.

@B: They've already said that pause will be added to the game. It'd be stupid not to include it.
I'm a little worried about that "playing dead". One thing I dislike about Mass Effect (and HL2 for that matter) is that the things you know aren't actually dead could not be killed until you had reached the trigger that would animate them. As long as I can kill them while they're playing dead, the annoyance factor will be minimal.

20 hours is pretty short. One could finish that in 3 days with no hassle at all.

It is actually a requirement that a pause function be included. The game will be able to be paused.
That being said, this is the Blood-Omen team, who are also responsible for From Russia with Love.
It WILL disapoint. It's EA AND it's Redwood Shores.
It's actually using a variation of the Bond and God Father engine.

Well that certainly changes a few things. Whether it proves itself as a game or not, I'm guessing this title just got bumped from must-buy to rent-only for quite a lot of people.

Sounds good to me. I dont have time for these epic, marathon in length games. Which sucks because it limits what RPG's and shit i can play.
But 15-20 hours is fine by me. That atleast 3-5 days of play time considering my work schedule and whatever else is going on in life

@ArmyofJuan: Of course you could always extend that 3-5 days of playing to 6-10 for longer games...
Longer games don't require longer playing sessions.

15-20 hours long. Well, that means it'll take me about a month and a half or so to beat. I like to take my time. Still though, I'm looking forward to this and it'll probably scare the crap out of me. I'm scared easily by video games.
@kusarigama:
You might as well not dignify him with a response after a post like that.

You know, I've been kinda pissy towards this game... but this single line has changed my view towards it.
"The goal is *not* simply to blast the aliens, but to strategically dismember them."
I hope it turns out well, cause NOW I'm looking forward to it :)

@GregoriusH: and don't forget the high explosive toxic goo gun used for floor polishing (NOT FOR USE IN EYES!)... now I'm craving some UT2k4.... need to get around to installing mods for ut3 though...
this game could be good, and if I was only watching the trailers i'd be sold... but the comic book promos... mmm hit the big pause button in my brain. I'll wait for reviews like I did with Alone in the Dark (and did not get)...

@Arttemis: i just mean that with a lot of rpg's it takes around 40-60 hours to get through which require a lot of sit down time with them. And you, or just me maybe, can really play an RPG in short bursts of like 1-3 hours at a time because then you dont really get a good feel for the story.
Plus during most of the year, except for these summer months and from january-march, there are a lot of games coming out week after week that it's hard to keep up with and enjoy them all

Very cool. The more I see about this game the better it looks. 15 - 20 hours (by todays standards) is a pretty long game, considering the bulk of shooters are under 10.
Playing dead - brilliant! A couple of nights ago I thought I smashed a nasty spider, but it was just playing dead. Scared the crap out of me when it started moving again 5 minutes later.
