Dead Space: The Cartoon: The Trailer
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:20 PM on July 24, 2008
No no no, this isn't the animated comic. That was something else. This is the proper Dead Space cartoon, which is being released straight to DVD. It's a prequel, explaining how everything went down before you end up on the ship where everything's trying to eat you. I must say, for a one-shot, feature-length marketing stunt, it's looking pretty good!

For a moment I thought it was a mock-trailer - similar to the Street Fighter IV short. Which made me really dig the cheesy voicing and over dramatics. Realizing it's an actual feature, I'm not sure how it's going to turn out.
The animation is great - it's always refreshing to see American animation that doesn't cater to children, like Heavy Metal or the Venture Bros.
I'll probably give it a look, likely not a buy.
@TRT-X: I think you hit a major point here. System Shock 2 which followed a similar concept as Dead Space - lone survivor on a ship infested with crew-member-become-monster types - had an incredible feeling of tension as you unraveled what had happened. It worked because your character had no memory of the events. However, looks like EA is taking a different approach and going for more of the visceral scare in their game - so having their backstory animation probably won't damage the game plotting too extensively.

Does anyone else wonder whether all the "backstory" this cartoon is meant to give us has already been given to us just by watching this trailer?
Or by reading the relevant pages of TV Tropse?
Either one really.

Hahaha, my friend .. just leave a light on, and you'll be alright!
This actually doesn't look too bad, kind of an extension of the online comic videos. I'll probably Netflix it, but we'll see.

Wow, Blu-Ray too... I'd buy that for a dollah!
I might download the DVD, maybe I'll buy blu-ray if EA can keep the price below $20. I mean it >is< a marketing thing, no reason to sell the movie for full price.
Wonder who did the animation?

@shini: Agreed. While the prequel movie has my attention (*shuffles off to Netflix*), this background should have been integrated into the game.
After all, this isn't like "Gotham Knight" where you had six mini stories interlocking to tell a different Batman tale than "Dark Knight," this Dead Space prequel is the reason you are playing the game.
I call foul, but I'm probably sucker enough to rent this thing.

Looks pretty good. I might pick it up for the story.

I hate when the background story is not in the game itself. This belongs on the game disc, not some unrelated DVD. First indication that Dead Space's (the game, duh) story will suck (if not nonexistent).

You know, part of the fun of Bioshock was figuring out what happened as you went. It helped add to the sense of unease...and ESPECIALLY added to the immersion. You really were Jack trying to figure out what the heck was going on.
And considering the other steps this game is going through to ensure immersion (no HUD, in-game menus)...you'd think that'd be something they'd want to play off of.

if this helps boost game sales, i wonder if it will become a standard thing for games. if it did it would actually be pretty sweet specially for a couple of games that have a huge plot and cant manage to squeeze everything in. either that or just to show the plot outline of the game. i think instead of releasing comics for halo 3 bungie should have gone with an anime or cg movie that would have been freaking awesome... a man can dream.

It looks like a pretty badly animated afternoon kids show but with tons of gore. But the story sounds cool and I think I heard Mark Hamill doing a voice, so I might check it out. I doubt I'll be able to finish the game though, I'm a wuss when it comes to horror games.

Looks pretty epic i think this is the type of game ive been waitting for meaning the little heard of untill closer to release and then i start hearing nothing but good things about it, the kind of game that tapes you on the shoulder and then proceds to kick your ass because of its shere awsomeness and it was totaly uncalledfor/unexpected

the trouble with this (and other western produced) animation is that the characters stick out too much from the backgrounds. Not to mention the character designs are too similar to other kid-oriented cartoons by film roman.

would be sweet if they made it an unlockable in the standard edition of the game. like you could find a secret chamber and that would unlock it for you (ala prince of persia/dracula x chronicles). i know it won't happen, why would EA cannibalize their own sales for the dvd and the inevitable SE (which i at least hope will have this as an addition, maybe unlockalbe in there?) I just like having an excuse to explore the whole world of my games

I'm all for more adult cartoons. (And by adult, I mean appealing to adults or adult oriented, not just it has boobies.) However, this really doesn't look very good. The voice acting was terrible, the story was completely cliche and in the end, all it is is a giant commercial for a videogame. I will say it looked reasonably pretty, but it was written horribly, so that doesn't make up for it.
More power to you if you liked it, but I didn't. I have not watched or read a single Dead Space article/video before this, and just going by this, I never want to play the game, much less see the movie/cartoon/whatever.

Meh. I'm excited about Dead Space and all, but spending $30 on a 90-minute commercial seems a little excessive. Plus, the animation seems pretty inconsistent from the trailer, as some of it looks decent, but a lot of it is pretty crappy.
Ultimately, it seems like something that'd be a neat bonus for the inevitable Special Edition of the game, but it's nothing I'd actually buy separately.

Wow, that's pretty grim and bloody. Trouble with animation is that it's quite hard to do dark, gloomy and unsettling - this seems to just take the horror and throw it in your face instead.
Not sure if it'll work.

I think i'm more interested in the game now that I was before. Previously, it seemed too "Hellraiser in Space" for my taste, but a video prequel might get me interested.
Either way, I'm keen on this idea of movies/plot-driven video used as an introduction to the games, rather than the other way around.
If they actually pull of an even "passable" story... it might be good news for the often flailing collaborations between the video and videogames mediums.
Reminds me of something Oddworld's Lorne Lanning was talking about a while back: creating IPs specifically designed to capitalize on the strengths of both mediums, rather than "porting" it to another as an afterthought.
Worth a rent, anyway.

Maaaaan. I really don't want to play Dead Space 'cause I HATE scary games but they make it sound so drat interesting.

I am certainly interested, but just from the trailer it looks to have all the budget, effort and direction of a Saturday morning cartoon. Animation can be just as atmospheric and well crafted as any film, if the team can pull it off. This reeks of cheap tie in. Although, this is just the trailer, so, I'll wait to see more of it.

The movie looks better than the game for mine - I will watch it and decide from there whether or not to play Dead Space.
Single-player FPS' aren't doing it at the moment for mine; it would be greatly appreciated if this turned it around with some great story telling.
