Diablo Fans Petition Against Diablo III
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:40 AM on July 2, 2008
After years of hoping, praying, cajoling, and begging for a follow-up, Blizzard has finally announced Diablo III, and fans all over the world cheered before getting down to business - complaining. A petition has gone up at whiner headquarters PetitionOnline, with over 2,000 fans signing on to complain about the game's art direction. Petitioners feel that the graphics we've seen so far depict a world that is far too bright and cartoony for their liking, citing World of Warcraft as one of the influences ruining their dark and macabre series. Where is the light radius? Why are those shoulder pads so huge? Here's an example of something they are complaining about.
Outside scenarios with vivid colours, beautiful forests with colourful vegetation, shinny and beautiful waterfalls where even rainbows take place.
They hate rainbows! They can't draw gothic fan art with rainbows in it!
*sigh* It just goes to show you that no matter how hard you try there's just no pleasing some people.

I say the game is looking sweet, and your forgetting diablo 2 is like tenyears old and they probably couldn't make it cool.
plus they havn't even shown off every area i saw some photos that had some rather unfriendly forest and town.

Diablo is supposed to feel like hell on earth and not some big gay world of frolicking elves and taurans. I am a Diablo fan and have been for some time and I will be the first to respond that Diablo fans are not fanboy fags. The WoW retards who dress up in ridiculous costumes a parade around like treckies are the fags. Also, anyone who thinks diablo 2 sucks is a fucking moron because it won best game of the year when it came out and despite being a 10 year old game it is still very popular. If you go to battlenet today there are still thousands of people playing it at any given hour of the day.
I have waited for another diablo for many years now and have felt ignored by blizzard because of all the work into WoW. Now that they finally make d3 they try and appeal to the WoW crowed and the diablo crowed. Well let me break it to them that diablo and WoW fans are very different and it is impossible to please us both because when a real diablo fan plays WoW he/she feels like we are playing a game for kids and when a WoW fan plays a real diablo game they either get scared or become depressed. I got an idea WoW stay the fuck out of our game and I wont petition Blizzard to make the next WoW game scarier and more realistic looking. And do not call me emo because you are the grown man dressing up in a wizard costume.

I'm a big fan of the Diablo series. For me, Diablo has always been the only dark and gothic-themed game that looks better than a colorful and WoW-ish ditto.
I don't think this petition is silly at all.
Random people spent some time in photoshop to "Diablofy" the screenshots, and it looks way better now.
Yes, I know what you think. I am too conservative about "a silly game". Fact is that the darkness and contrast is what defines the Diablo universe. The game looks really good so far, but it is not a true Diablo in my book if they just do what they have done so far - A World of Warcraft suited for 5-6 players in the same party...
The graphics is NOT Diablo. This is more like a spin-off.
Diablo goes cartoon.

This is the dumbest thing i've ever heard.
"We want our new shiny game to look crappy and old. Singed, stupid."
Seriously, grow up fanboys. I loved diablo 2 to death but usually the third game in a series is SUPPOSED to look better than the second.

Maybe because what's shown in the demo is the early levels. It was stated that the game takes place 20 years after the second game, so I guess everybody and everything recovered to normal. I think that when the players progress on later levels, the level design will transform to the dark atmosphere that Diablo is all about. Just my guess.

the core fans want the dark mood
I'm guessing Blizz went with a brighter tone in the art style to attract an audience outside that core fan group. It's like Mortal Kombat not being Mortal Kombat without brutal and bloody fatalities - they see Diablo not being Diablo without dark/moody graphics.

It's better darker, I liked the whole light radius thing too (even though I just turned up the gamma so I could see everything half the time). The graphics are definitely lighter and the out doors do look too happy (even diablo 2 had dark outdoor areas like the rogue encampment, the forest in act 3 and arreat summit but all those were quite dark).
I don't think it's too much of a problem really but I sure would prefer it darker and more grim.

I understand the need to avoid drab colors in this generation of gaming, but telling the fans to "die in fire?" "Eat shit and die?"
Here's a hint, kiddos: They don't want Diablo to be *realistic*. They want it to be...*gasp!*...DIABLO! And guess what Diablo is? Hellfire, blood, macabre, and all that depressing mess.
But hey, I know most of you want color in just about every new game just for the sake of combating against other games going for the realism route, so when long-time fans just want their beloved sequel to have some art that echoes the dark mood of the previous games, they have to "eat shit and die", because they're apparently not as forward-thinking as you are.
Go fuck yourselves.

@h_jeremiah: It was for game play reasons. Some items had a larger light radius mods which made parts of the game slightly easier. It was a dungeon crawler after all. Many levels take place in brightly lit areas so it wasn't a hardware deficiency (as well D2's not a 3D game so lighting radius would not improve performance noticeably.)

Just so we are clear... Diablo 2 looked like shit when it came out. I'm sorry, it was NOT a good looking game. At all. It did some cool stuff... but it was a low-res/ low-color palete mess of dated 2-D sprites.

You know back when diablo (was it 1 or 2) came out it was brighter, then one day a patch came out and made it worlds darker. Alot of us got made because we had grown use to it and it became harder to react and see things coming.
One can argue that this made it more challenging but to us it broke the game. Blizzard followed quickly by making the file that was change available in its previous form.
I say if blizzard even takes note of this they should just make an option to switch between the two styles. If not ill take well light over too dark any day. Besides my eyes are getting older every day and its been awhile since i dungeon crawled in a diablo game.

I watched a bit of the gameplay trailers and I must say the game looks fantastic. I don't get where this "cartoony" idea comes from. I guess maybe if you're zoomed in and staring at textures and models for 20 minutes per frame then you'll notice some of that stuff, but then you're not really playing the game at all. I think it's ridiculous that people are blasting blizzard for this. They finally give the fans what they want, and in return piss on Blizz's face. What's wrong with these people? If they don't like how Diablo III looks, then fine, go play Diablo II, there will be many other gratified players to take your place. On that note, I'm seriously sick of colorless games. All these games that use nothing but tan and beige are getting old. Computers and consoles have the capability of displaying millions and billions of colors on the screen all at once, and yet we want to limit that to shades of red purple and black? That just doesn't make any sense to me.

One thing I'm curious about. Was the light radius in D2 due to technical limitations in not being able to display the entire area, or was it due to ambiance.
If it was due to technical limitations, then it makes perfect sense to remove it for D3. IF however it was put in for ambiance reasons, I could see a very small reason to complain about it's lack of inclusion.
Every other detail there is just ridicules though.

Has anybody even really looked at the comparisons? Personally prefer most of the darker ones (although some of the screenshots are just simply too dark, brightness wise). I think it kind of sticks better with the theme that is Diablo... but I wasn't a huge fan of the announcement anyway so meh.
I can't say I'm too impressed with everyone's knee jerk reaction that the people making the comparisons and wishing for a darker, grittier palette are crybabies... but maybe they could have worded their 'petition' a bit better. But half the people here would still have the same blind reaction without even reading what they have to say anyway... self righteousness is so draining to witness.

Why do people want a 'New' game to look more like an 'Old' game? Here's a refresher of what was required to run D2 when it was released...
Diablo 2 System Requirements (Windows):
233 MHz Pentium or better, 32 MB RAM, 650 MB drive space, 4X CD-ROM drive, DirectX compatible video card
So basically what I hear the whiners saying is "Blizzard needs to make the (new) game look like a near 10 year old game, because the near 10 year old game that runs on a (now) dinosaur computer looks better".
Pretty strong opinions and complaints people have already formed based solely on a 20 minute gameplay video and a handful of screenshots...

I'm kind of chilled about this because i know blizz won't cave in to these whiners because if there are people who know how to make a game.. It's blizzard.

Jeez what is wrong with people? The story for the game starts by saying it's been 20 years since the last one. It's been peaceful and 20 years is more than enough time for things to grow in place of the death that was there before. I'm sure that later in the game everything will turn to black and red as everything get's destroyed.
And the big shoulder pads are fine. The game looks much less cartoony than WoW and the shoulder pads are fitting anyways since the barbarian is a huge character. If I was that huge I would want huge armor so I don't die since I'm such a huge target.
For anyone who still won't quit being a bitch about it: Quit being a bitch about it! The game will be amazing no matter what happens and you should just be happy the game is being made.

It's not that ridiculous, Blizzard has already made adjustements on SC2 after the exact same complaints. I don't mind myself, but if they make the game darker, I won't mind either, and at this point of the game, they can easily change it and adjust it. Hell most of the changes just ivnolve lowering brightness and reducing the bloom so it's less shiny and more gritty. Nothing blizzard can't tackle.

I'd be all for an anti-petition on this. It's Blizzard's damn game, they can go in the direction they want. And if you don't like it then DON'T PLAY IT.
They have no obligation to you as a fan to mold their development around your wishes. In fact, they have a MUCH higher obligation to mold the game to their wishes. No matter how big a fan you are of Diablo I guarantee that the people working on it have put more time into it, and I don't mean the easy end of playing it, but the difficult end of making it. They have to leave their families, work long hours and have stress, and you can bet it is more important that THEY like it rather than YOU for that reason, to keep them doing this labor of love.

Can someone start a petition against fanboyism? This is really getting out of hand. First, you have the zealot Fallout fans who have spent the last 2+ years doing everything they can to convince themselves and others that Bethesda is going to completely ruin their franchise because Bethesda dared to make something other than an isometric turn-based RPG. Now you've got these twits whining that Blizzard may add some color to the newest iteration of Diablo as they give it a welcome graphical overhaul.
Fanboys: If don't want change, PLAY THE ORIGINAL GAMES AGAIN. Otherwise, understand that the people who make the games actually want to advance the franchises in ways that interest them, and enjoy the fact that the most talented developers around are giving you something new and different.

I don't see why people who are new adopters complain at fans. If there's a fan of a series you don't tell them they need to change to do what you want. 'Hey I want to buy MGS4 but we'll do it how us new fans want it, no cut scenes and more action', you just don't. I wouldn't opt into Final fantasy 13 and start spamming the box saying, no no no we need more stuff like the other games. Each series does it's own thing and the problem here is that Diablo 3 has moved away from it's usually grim, macabre and realistic graphics to a brighter and more cartoony way (it's not cartoony it just has the appearance of it). Fans clearly don't like it much but new people seem to, it's probably best to go with the fans rather than new people in my opinion though as you can make a game for fans or just try and get a few more sales by making the series more like others.
Why not make MGS4 have little story, Mario have less puzzles and more fanservice, FFXIII concentrate more on relationship building than level building. The problem with straying away from what a title is unique at is that you lose that title. Diablo 3 doesn't look like Diablo 3 should in my opinion. I don't mind too much but I would prefer it darker and grittier.

I don't think blizzard was lobotomized and forgot what Diablo is all about, I just think we haven't seen the real meat and potatoes of this game yet. I also don't think jumping to assumptions and making ones mind up after seeing a minuscule part of the game is valid response to anything.
On that note I see what they are getting at with the comparisons, but I for one, don't mind color in a game, and think they will use to contrast against the darker more insidious areas you will find in game. We as the general public have no idea whats in store for us yet.

I'm happy with the colors, as far as I'm concerned, the Diablo world won't be less gritty because of it. At long last a game that won't be constructed of only browns and greys and the odd blue or green!
And as they said during a panel at the Invitational, they studied the use of vibrant colors in horror movies for a long time in order to make sure that they used those appropriately. I know that these guys know what they're doing. The petitioners can kiss my sweet ginger ass.

The more vivid the colors are the better enemies will look when they explode into a cloud of blood. I played the hell out of Diablo 2 and am impressed with the new(Warcraft like) art direction. At least this petition wont do any good, the games been in development for too long and Blizzard isn't going to take that crap.

I guess brown is the new cowbell.
I thought the screens looked great. I was excited for the prospects of a Diablo game that didn't look generic.

Well, I didn't mind the dungeon area TOO much, though it did seem a bit cartoony. I also didn't notice anything wrong with the armor. But that outside world, though, yeah, that seemed a little strange. Definitely didn't seem like Diablo, that.

The opening tutorial should have unicorns, rainbows, flowers, bunnie rabbits, etc. Just to scare them away.
It seems these people don't want a sequel, where the game moves forward in a new direction, but just a grapical update and new weapons... :(

It looks nothing like WoW ... As a Blizzard Vet I can definitely still see the distinctive Diablo style.
But jeez, these guys are fools to tell Blizzard they don't know what they're doing.

it looks like they just want less color, a more grainer look, and a more gloomy feel. The edited version of this looks real sic tho:

couldn't they just make a filter for this stuff?

The only point I can sort of agree with is the radius of light which added to the mood and slight suspense of diablo. In the mock-up linked to on the survey they have a larger version of the picture in the kotaku post, and I have to say it looks much much better with the light radius implemented

Ok, two things...
A) Some people will complain about anything.
"ZOMG!!!1! This game is too bright!. Why can't it be overly dark like Diablos 1 and 2? I want to have to turn up the gamma on my monitor to see anything."
B) Don't they don't that petitions, especially on-line versions, make fuck-all difference in the grand scheme of things?

LMAO you cant be serious. Ive seen threads in forums where people bitch about colors being too drab and dark or too much brown. Now we see 1 maybe 2 levels of diablo 3 and people are bitching its too colorful?
