Does This Banjo Kazooie Video Confirm An Xbox 360 Motion Controller?
Did Ken Lobb, creative director at Microsoft Game Studios, just confirm motion control will be a factor in the newest Banjo Kazooie game? We're saying it's a "definite maybe". Others are saying yes, based on Lobb's comments in a Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts walk-through with developer commentary. What comments?
Specifically, Ken says "The primary function that Kazooie has in the game is she carries this wrench and the wrench is used for many different things. One of the things that the wrench is used for is to turn these devices. So you basically grab with the wrench and then you twist the controller around and it'll move different things in the game".
While we're mostly positive that Microsoft will be spilling the official beans on X-waggle come next week, we're not going to take Ken's word as motion controlled gospel. He could have merely misspoke, even if it's a rumour we've heard before. If you want to be the judge, make it to the 4 minute mark on the IGN video linked below.

But....I don't want to have to buy a new joypad...
vyleside
We could be reading more into this than there is as we have been twisting things in games with Analog controllers for a while. But I would not be surprised if this game had motion controls as there is too much talk of MS doing motion controls and the game could probably fill that gap nicely.
Konchu
@ShirtGuyDom: I AGREE!!!
PatMan33
I don't want to sound overly negative - but that video made the game look quite over-complicated for a platformer. Or am I just dull? I've not played any of the previous games - were there jiggies in that? He must have said jiggy about ten times in the last minute...
I'd probably get this game if I had a 360 anyway, but this doesn't look like the game to go out and make me buy one.
tmo
Using the wrench?
Wow, Ratchet ripoff, too? M$ can't come up with any ideas, let alone stealing motion controls and items from other games.
GTA4er
If MS drop a motion controller it better be the best fucking motion controller ever made. It needs to trash the Wii and PS3 to carry real value, and even then it'd lack the freedom of the nunchuck addon. I'm totally up for some tech competition in the area of input, far more than i am for graphics.
Sunjammer
As long as they only have motion controls as a peripheral it doesn't bother me. As soon as other 360 games start trying to incorporate it into gameplay (ala sixasis) THEN we have a problem.
TheHun
This game looks incredible now. I'm glad this video clears some things up.
Motion controls or not (I'm sure they're optional), I'm looking forward to this game.
I LOL @ people who care/whine/laugh at whether or not it has motion controls. Who cares? Seriously?
Especially if it's optional, if not, it will work great...RARE, of all people, can handle this.
Shandy706
I love this idea, I don't really care what others say but motion controlls and a game other than fps is a definite buy for me.
Eon.
I thought Microsoft said that motion control was soo last gen! And now they get it anyway? Zoarrr!
Grauw
It's too complex, it's too complex! I loved Banjo-Kazooie on the 64 when I was lots younger, and I would totally be up for a resurgence of that love... But it's too complex! What's wrong with just making a platformer, a standard Banjo platformer?
carrliadiere
Nooo!
That's EXACTLY what I hate about most Wii games. "Twist the controller to push a button" - how is that supposed to be any more fun (instead of painful) than actually pressing a button on your controller?
Golf? Ok. Tennis, ok. Fishing?! Ok.
Wrench? Not ok.
kryo
I don't care about motion control, the game looks awesome and has some great jokes in it. The N64 in the beginning, the garbage bin full of boxes of ghoulies. The graphics are charming, the vehicles look fun and building stuf is always great. I really don't understand all the negative vibe.
Surek
@JGab: yeah the fact that kojima said they would not develop\ it for the xbox, the fact that they promote sony and blu ray in the game and the fact that the game engine was built ground up for the ps3 and cel processor make your comment look stupid
33cbg2113
i know the banjo series came out long before insomniacs ratchet and clank but it seems that the name of this banjo game nuts and bolts, might tell something about rare trying to grab some of the good things from the ratchet series
33cbg2113
I would say no it doesn't confirm anything, but those on screen button reminders are annoying as hell. What ever happened to having to remember how to play the game?
BillDoE
Honestly if microsoft does reveal a motion sensing controller, I could see how this game could actually benefit from its implementation. But it'll be interesting to see if Microsoft can actually get devs on board with this new controller and get them to use them in meaningful ways unlike half of the garbage out there for the Wii.
Mech_Master
Firstly, I'm kinda mad that I saw MORE of The Dark Knight prematurely.
Secondly, LOL Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts.
TheDaftPunk
@Mr. Fap☆Fap!:
Without trying to be too cliche, I may actually make some popcorn to eat while they announce the waggle.
Darkest Daze
The second video on IGN shows some interesting stuff! One of the add-ons for the vehicles is a Gyroscope so you can rotate the car in mid-air! Hint?
henri1kk
This seems like its trying to copy my good friend Ratchet.
SaanZ
If they pack the motion controller in with the game and price it reasonably, I'll buy it.
billnabors65
I remember when I used to be excited for this game.
TF2Soldier914
Rumor. Don't hold your breath for whatever motion controls you are hoping for in Banjo.
Seriously man - false...
CPaladino
I really don't care for motion controls, i just want this game to be good, i need a decent platformer for the 360.
jamesbong00spliff
It's just going to be six-axis like controls...they need it for the MGS4 port...
JGab
@TRT-X: We don't know if they completely removed the classical gameplay elements... We just can't make that assumption because we don't have enough information about the game! I think it looks really fun and knowing Rare, I'm really anxious for this game!
henri1kk
So wait...they took the classic Bear n' Bird gameplay elements, and completely removed them in favor of giving Kazooie a wrench?
How is this Banjo-Kazooie again?
TRT-X
This is a sad story Kotaku, because, instead of talking about MOTION CONTROLS we should be talking about the actual VIDEOS! The game is looking FANTASTIC and I'm actually more than curious now. I'm excited!
DARTH_TIGRIS
He says "twist". Not tilt, waggle, turn, tip, flip, spin, or chuck. Thus I take this as a confirmation of the XBOX 360 Playdough controller.
Primed
I personally think it's a good start, I like what I see and hopefully they build upon it.
As for the controller waggling? I think it has been taken waaaay out of context. I think when he say rotate the controller he may just be referring to either rotating the controller stick or rotate the control in the game world.
Sounds very silly if they were to give away one little clue like that!
Y2Jason
I think Microsoft needs to learn from motion controls in the industry at large. SIXAXIS was, for the most part, a terrible excuse for a feature that was probably only dropped in to take people's attention away from the lack of rumble at launch. The only decent implementations that it has in games are so subtle you barely notice them (See MGS4).
I have less of a way to describe what I think is wrong with Nintendo's implementation of motion and more of a feeling that the Wii is a bit of a gimmick. The only game that I dust it off to play every now and again is Brawl... and that's only when I have friends over and CoD 4 is already taken. Maybe this can be a good implementation on motion, maybe Microsoft really did it right this time. Personally I'm going to look at Banjo Kazooie a bit more warily at this point (mostly because I think console controllers are a bad idea to begin with and Mouse and Keyboard is where it's at), but I'm open to persuasion. I do agree with most of the above posts in that Xbox 360 Fanboy is going to have a total meltdown after criticizing the Wii and the PS3 for their motion adaptations.
Cake_Eater
I don't care for a damn motion controller on the 360. If this game is centered around that controller than I am likely not going to get it. If i want motion control then I will play my Wii, I like my 360 for standard gameplay.
Xcite79
god....i really hate the idea of this game as whole....i'm sure they could've done alot better
youngn134
@R3load: Nothing against ps3 or sixaxis, i dont have a ps3 so i really wouldn't know, but it seems to me that sony messed up. I think nintendo got it right because you can move both your arms to play something instead of shaking a single controller, if sony had made something like a breakaway controller, i think it would have worked out a bit better. Again i dont know, im just speculating.
smuckersisgood
If you look at the very beginning of the video you see Kazooie playing a 360. He twists the controller (a normal 360 controller) back and forth. Maybe this is proof that there is going to be motion control built in? Perhaps they're just adding an accelerometer to the normal controller or something similar that adds some motion control, but doesn't give up on the hardcore gamers on the 360.
I personally wouldn't mind if they added something that was in the controller, but completely optional to use.
I also noticed he was playing LIVE with the controller waggling. Online waggle fights ftw
BrutalAssailant
@Strangelove: well, i've loved them since then. yay lupin the third!
thejakeman: visit my site!
@slomo788:
Um, the same way the chatpad does it? Works fine for it, not to mention a motion contol based addon could be smaller than the chatpad, allowing it to be even better.
OrionnoirO
Respect..... for.... Microsoft......... draining!
LegendK1ll3r
@sarcasmOD: Possibly, but i think its also possible that the game, you know, might not suck. But of course you know that. Its not like you've already dismissed an unfinished game without having played it. That would be jumping the gun. Don't cha think?
smuckersisgood
@Quicksilver4648: The difference between the SixAxis and the Wiimote (hehe, that never gets old) is that Sony couldn't copy the wiimote outside of motion controls because that's all we knew about before they showed us the controller. Now that both the SixAxis and the Wii controller is out, any company could easily replicate them while trying to make it their own.
P.S: I think SixAxis motion controls are good. We just dont have a good game to show it, and it doesnt look like many developers really care to use it.
R3load
If you listen closely you can hear the sound of the analog stick as he says that. I think it's just the wrong use of words.
ThePeacemaker02
Don't care. I have a PS3, and it's great, but the sixaxis is a waste of time and this will be too.
Hiroken
Microsoft is really opening up a very risky can of worms here. They should have just started working on a console where motion controls actually SHIP with the unit. I really have a bad feeling that this could fail, badly.
ThisCharmingMan
@Flowen: Not really. With any IP, even not so great ones, some people buy it because it has a certain name and they loved the old ones even if everyone else thinks they sucked. Many dumb people will buy this without doing any research other than knowing that the bear and bird will be in it. But those same dumb people won't buy an unheard of game where they did the same amount of research into it's gameplay.
sarcasmOD
Wow. They really screwed up Banjo. Sure the Banjo nostalgia level looks pretty cool, but jesus christ, they looked like the sucked all the charm out of the franchise and replaced it with extremely complex game design.
And by complex game design, I mean that even Ken Lobb had a hard time trying to explain the shitload of mundane tasks and annoying machines you have to have to use just to enter a new level from the hub world.
marmidukestank
Why again did they not create a new IP? Would that not work better then risking the credibility of something as beloved as Banjo-Kazooie?
Flowen
Watch the videos. To me the game looks pretty damn fun. It's like a giant physics-based sandbox where you can just fool around in vehicles and do some fun stuff. The graphics are pretty damn beautiful too.
But as to the motion control: I don't see why it would be necessary, and that comment was far too ambiguous to really judge. Plus, there is a part during one of the videos where the entire control scheme and what each button does is shown, and it includes all the buttons (a,b,x,y,RT,LT,RB,LB) so unless the motion control controller is massive, I don't see it happening.
Sonic_and_Tails
@AZRoboto: Yeah its like staring at my future. *begins to cry*
smuckersisgood
If I am going to pick a favorite console, I wont lie, its the 360. But please, I don't really want a Wii controller knock-off. The PS3 tried it and failed so I hope nobody else gets the idea they can take the thunder from the Wii. Just support what you already have.
Quicksilver4648
@Fadakar: He probably meant to say move the analog stick.
Poisonous Taoist
Oh my god, did anyone see that guy's HAIR? That made the video right there.
AZRoboto
So many flames so little water. I'm glad to be a gamer but the level pessimism and negavity I see in gaming today is astounding. This post is directed towards all trolls that propagate ignorant rants on console specific stories without any knowledge of the product at hand. I know its the internetz but its becoming more annoying & more prevalent as time goes by.
Nexus6
All of you are so scared of a new control.
afraid of spending money in another control.
Come on, lets just wait for some announcements at te E3.
then we can trash talk about new petipherals
AlejandroLestad
@smuckersisgood: This is true. Damn internet :)
R3load
Is microsoft arriving a little late to the party? I don't know if the general population is so enthralled with motion control anymore, and all those that are own wiis, right?
I mean, I guess... Why not? There's no reason not to, I suppose, if they think it can bring in more money. I haven't played a ps3 game where motion control was put to great use, so I'm wary.
walrusbrown
@R3load: Thats what the internet does duh.
smuckersisgood
Did anyone notice the Nintendo 64 standing next to the 360 at the beginning?!!!
henri1kk
Oh man this game looks better and better every time i see it! Rare is the only reason i enjoy my Xbox. I can't wait for Banjo and Viva!
Also, that motion control thing is very exciting.
RichChap
How are we getting so much negative feedback with practically nothing to go on? People are already making claims and comments about a controller that we don't know truly exists, and if it does, we don't know how its going to feel with the said game/s that will use it. Mind boggling. Hehe.
R3load
I really dont see this as refering to any kind of motion sensor system. I believe he was simply refering to the avatar (Banjo) twisting the crane controller. As someone once said, if you hear hooves trotting, go ahead and call it a horse, not a zebra.
StagnatedLives
Ken Lobb looks like the local pedophile in my town.
Pepsiman34
Not only did he let it slip that there would be some type of motion controller for the 360, the video was made for this purpose.
There's so many things in my opinion that just seem to be referring to it. That was the vibe I got from it. Also, the bird in the beginning was shaking a 360 controller around while he was playing, but why make the controller so obviously a 360 controller.
TheGuero
@Gitaroo_Dude: Well, They haven't announced a motion controller yet, and we don't know that one tiny sentence confirms it. Since you're already assuming that said imaginary motion controller will indeed suck makes it sound like you are indeed a troll. Does that explain it?
smuckersisgood
Hey, if the controller is gonna debut with any game, this would be the perfect game to do it.
Unless, theres gonna be a 360 Sports.
:: shivers ::
Saint Anima
I saw the video at IGN.. and..
1. The guy says "twist the controller", he might be referring to the crane's controller.. or even the analog stick, whatever.
2. I don't see why this game would need motion controls.. I saw nothing in the video that required motion control. Damn MS, if you're going to copy Nintendo, at least do it right! Make a 360Sports or something! :P
3. This game is looking WAY too complex.. too much stuff to collect and create and.. I don't get it..
CockroachMan
@EGBTMagus: Correct, but you can't deny the cover system from Uncharted is pretty similar to the Gears one! I played both and I noticed the similarities! But I wasn't being sarcastic, I really think there's nothing wrong with it!
henri1kk
@gcZanmato: Motion will probably be optional (unless the game comes bundled with the new controller) and the vehicles aren't just for racing, they're mostly for moving around the immense overworld! Beats walking!
henri1kk
@EGBTMagus: Bah Winback released before hand and features a cover system...
EGBTMagus
@henri1kk: Gears of War wasn't the first game to feature a cover system... Killswitch did it way before...
EGBTMagus
Rare, what are you doing? The original Banjo-Kazooie was one of the best platformers ever (don't get me started on two). But motion controls and racing? I don't like where this is going...
gcZanmato
Doesn't the crane have a "controller"
When he says "twist the controller around", couldn't he mean "Kazooie twists the crane's controller around"? with your controller, you use the analog stick to make Kazooie twist the crane's controller around and move the boom. That was my interpretation of it anyway.
Nothing in the game suggested use of anything other than a standard controller. I don't think this is a confirmation of anything.
Nside
Damn i really miss the original games on the N64. They were freaking fun, and very entertaining. I wish this was on the PS3, I miss Banjo Kazooie :(
kcgig101
@thejakeman: visit my site!:
I think you confused "trendy" with the word "new", as they are not synonymous.
Also, I've hated QTEs since Dragon's Lair.
Strangelove
I'm not crazy about the vehicles aspect, but with motion controls I would buy it without a doubt. I just want to experience some Wii stuff without dropping $300 for another console. Is that so bad? Plus, the cars aspect sounds like it was just built for this.
kylo4
Motion control should be used to extend the gameply experience, not change them when you aren't adding anything. The Metroid Prime 3 motion stuff was stupid, it allowed you to experience opening a door. Fuck that. I want a game like Red Steel that isn't broken where you can really swing the controller around like a sword and have it mimicked real-time. Get cracking, developers.
sarcasmOD
@JoRo1986: Kind of like when Uncharted copied the cover system from Gears! Nothing wrong with that!
henri1kk
@slomo788: yeah that would be rad. I thought the shivering isles was pretty colorful though. More of a gritty, realistic brand of colorful, but i liked it.
smuckersisgood
@dead_red_eyes:
Pfft, hardly.
Simply pointing out that MS can't grasp what made the Wiimote successful in the first place and that's going to lead this Newton abomination down the same path of the Sixaxis is trolling how?
Gitaroo_Dude
I don't care if the controllers are waggle or non-waggle! This game looks really fun! And I'll be getting it for sure! If it does have motion control, the only way I'm buying the X-mote is if it comes with the game!
henri1kk
@slomo788: good point, i'd guess it would also have a headphone jack like you said, but maybe there is no motion controller and the guy just said that to fuck with us. Ugh, now my head hurts.
smuckersisgood
@smuckersisgood: Yeah. I hope they use that same engine and come up with a good western RPG. The world just looks fantastic.
slomo788
@slomo788: yeah its so nice to see something with color coming to 360. i've really really missed it.
smuckersisgood
@smuckersisgood: @serotoninzero: But then how do you chat while playing online with it? Unless it ALSO has a headphone jack? Damn, my head hurts...
slomo788
**Smacks Microsoft for doing motion control**
BAD MICROSOFT!!!!
StealthMaster86
So, basically, what Ken really means is: "We're going to copy and paste the wrench functionality from the Ratchet & Clank games."
JoRo1986
@Gitaroo_Dude: Hey, I just got a zune, It's wicked fun!
*awaits his M$ paycheck*
Zerbrechen
@serotoninzero: hmm, i hadn't thought of that, that definitely would make more sense than a whole new controller, and I like that a bit better.
smuckersisgood
But Microsoft... motion control is a gimmick!
XD
Zerbrechen
@Gitaroo_Dude:
Troll much?
dead_red_eyes
@smuckersisgood: Especially that it looks so damn delicious.
slomo788
lame controller is lame
bobdisgea
Couldn't it just be a little piece that connected to the headphone jack area? Introducing a new controller seems like a bad idea. Unless it had all four face buttons, the triggers and shoulder buttons and !!a good d-pad!!.
serotoninzero
@YourAnthony:
Your pitiful attempts to deny the truth can't change the facts on the ground.
And fear not! More posts are sure to follow...
Gitaroo_Dude
Jesus christ there are a lot of people who are so negative when we dont know jack shit. lets just wait and see what happens people. Im just glad were getting a new banjo game. Sheesh
smuckersisgood
I don't see how that gives away anything about motion controllers. If that is the case, the motion movements are almost non-existant and seem to be not full featured. I'm sure this is just a regular controller.
VakeroRokero
Ummm, twist the analog stick around... maybe? Whatever, we knew this was coming anyway and no one should really give a damn.
Rorschach2112
Another thing that makes me think that the game wont use a motion controller is that when he goes into the build screen for the vehicles there are controller buttons assigned to various functions including left and right triggers, and bumpers, and all of the normal face buttons. My question is how are they putting all these buttons on a wiimote like device without it being mad cumbersome?
smuckersisgood
@Gitaroo_Dude:
I, for one, look forward to another spectcrapular post by you
YourAnthony
I'm sensing the doomsday clock tick another minute closer to midnight.
Tacked-on waggle is the worst kind... you're breaking my heart, Microsoft...
Heliophage
Rare has always done some funky and pretty innovative things, so if someone NEEDS to do it, I guess I'm happy with Rare being the ones to give it a try.
But yes, I don't know which is funnier: Microsoft inevitably claiming this is innovative, or everyone judging things before they've given it a try.
Sonic_and_Tails
I'm not sure if I want to play the new one.
but I shall go play the original!
YEA NINTENDO 64! YOU HAVE HAVE THE BEST GAMES!
chaos_isnt_here
The birdmen are trying to fly again!
I, for one, look forward to another spectacular MS failure on the level of the Zune, to join the other list of 360 failures.
Gitaroo_Dude
I does look pretty though. I still don't know about the vehicles, but my previous skepticism is fading.
enewtabie
oh and that guy really needs a different haircut
smuckersisgood
well i think i saw kazooie holding a standard looking 360 controller at the beginning of the demo, im thinking maybe he misspoke and was actually talking about kazooie. Or maybe not. Personally i dont really care. I've been dying for a good platformer ever since i got a 360, and if that means that i have to buy some motion controller, so be it. Im really lovin the graphics and art direction of this game and i personally like the new vehicle stuff they're doing. I also like that he says that there will be traditional platforming gameplay in the game as well, that was one of my main worries. I loved my old ps2 and the great platformers on that system, so this is great that i'll finally have a good platformer on 360.
smuckersisgood
@RodneyMcKay: Yeah, that's what I'm guessing.
YesILikeGuys
Know how amazon (I think) listed this game at $40? What if that price is for the game only and there's another bundled packed with the rumored motion controller? Just a thought.
YesILikeGuys
They "could" add an accelerometer peripheral for the current controller to make it waggle, but I'm sure this is the rumored Newton project.
LittleBigPlaneteer
Motion controlz iz lam3z...
Yuji Noeji
This game looks really cool
YourAnthony
crap. theres no need for motion control!
Nintendo has it! NO ONE ELSE NEEDS IT!!!!!!!!!!
-goes off to kill any more motion controlers-
chaos_isnt_here
At least it appears that the motion controller isn't required to play the game(or even all that necessary).
Maybe that's why this game is listed as being $40 on Gamestop.com, the game will be $40 and they might bundle the controller with the game.
RodneyMcKay
@Archaotic:
Somethings amiss here, Watson!
The evidence provided to us says that the gaming community laughed whole heartedly at Sony announcing 'innovative' motion controls for the Sixaxis, and we have reason to beleive Microsoft will also make such a claim! That, of 'innovation!'.
We must investigate further, for there is no way anyone would try this a second time!
Exclamation mark! Buh buh buuuuuuuh!
Komrade_Kayce
I'm going to say that by "twist the controller around" that he means turn the analog stick in a circle.
I just don't see him letting something that big slip.
smcallah
This game looks so, so fun.
InsidiousTuna
Hey guys lets all talk about how crappy this is when we haven't actually heard any official stuff about it or played a demo.
Ok ready? GO!
CCCombobreaker
@Mr. Fap☆Fap!:
Considering how much hate Sixaxis controls get even now, yes, this announcement is going to be totally freaking hilarious.
Archaotic
If there was going to be a motion control system in this game it would in all likelihood play a much larger role than just Kazooie's little wrench thing. Moving those boxes around and such would be a perfect chance for Microsoft to use motion controls, but based on how stable they looked while being picked up I doubt it was motion controlled. I guess it's possible that it could have optional motion controls, but that would just make it a useless extra gimmick in my eyes.
Jefflar
I've never heard the phrase "twist the controller" outside of the waggle realm.
Confirmed.
vanderblade
Either it confirms that there's a motion controller, or it confirms that he's one of those guys who violently thrusts their 360 controller the way they want to move as they're doing it with the buttons.
DukeOfPwn
The Microsoft fanboy reaction to MS's E3 keynote is singlehandedly going to make this the most entertaining E3 ever.
Sweet, sweet internet meltdowns. I thrive upon you like a vampire to a fat man.
Mr. Fap☆Fap!
Ken Lobb looks annoying, but other than that, sounds like he did confirm it. "You just twist the controller around...". Yep. ;D
Fadakar
I'm guessing in these videos that they used the normal 360 controller because when Kazooie levitates objects they seem to be in a very static position.
I could see it being possible that using a motion controller could let you move the objects around.
RodneyMcKay
@Strangelove: quick time events are fun. and in no way are they new.
