Dragon Quest Remakes Are Big In Japan
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 4:20 PM on July 25, 2008
You know how this works. Square-Enix takes classic game, remakes it for the Nintendo DS, Japan freaks. The gamers in that nation snapped up well over a half-million copies of the Dragon Quest V do-over last week, according to Media Create. They also grabbed a considerable amount of the latest Gundam thing, further lining the pockets of Namco Bandai bigwigs.
Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G returns to the top ten, after a drop in sales. The rest of the best sellers are after the jump.

Man, I'm wishing Dragon Quest V came out sooner. I like this more than VI, even though there's no job system.

I'm glad to see Gundam Battle Universe is number two, it's a really good game and a must import for any Gundam fan.

Go Band Brothers, go! Only 12,000 behind now! :>
@Archaotic: Probably. DQ5 in first week sold about the same as MGS4 lifetime (Japan) sales though...

@BPMο:
"Chrono Trigger was perfect as it was. No need for revamped visuals/sounds."
There is no such thing as "perfect". Not to say the game should have been remade with their 3D FF3/4 game engine, it just appears to be a hastily conceived port with very little extras to warrant repurchasing if you already own the original or the PS1 port.
Could have used a very small facelift, maybe some better animation, also maybe a slightly improved MIDI soundtrack.

I didn't realize DQ5 was already out, and we're still waiting on that 4 remake out here. Regardless, I'm more interested in Gundam Battle Universe.

Hmm... some things I've noticed about this chart...
1) Geez, that's a helluva lot of DQ5! I guess it's not too surprising.
2) Smash is back on the charts. Yay! It hasn't been in the top 30 for about three weeks. Wonder how well it's actually doing, though.
3) Diamond and Pearl are back in the charts? Holy crap! Well, Diamond was near the bottom of the charts for the past two weeks, but this is the first time Pearl's been on in a while. Guess Dialga's just more popular than Palkia. :o
4) McWhertor accidentally "corrected" the misspelled title Initial D: Extream Stage... Heheh...
5) Surprised RE0:Wii is still in the charts...
6) Snake refuses to die! :D

@M:
Chrono Trigger was perfect as it was. No need for revamped visuals/sounds.
Plus, one of the coolest parts about the DS port is the NA release will feature both the original translation used for the SNES/PS1 version, as well as a new translation, probably more accurate to the original Japanese script (though, I hope they keep the English names the same).

I don't mind Square Enix bringing over their old games onto the DS and long as they're remakes, which is why I'm a bit dismayed that Chrono Trigger is just an enhanced port.

@Marduk:
You won't see any substantial increase in hardware sales for the DS until they either lower the price or come out with a new model, and even then we don't know by how much.
Remember that there are 23 million units in Japan alone(Over 75million worldwide), which is an impressive number seeing as the unit has yet to hit that $99 price mark.

You'd think I would be a prime candidate for a Dragon Quest addict since I love many Japanese things, RPGs, and all that good stuff but I've only ever played Dragon Quests I & II and that was back in the day on my Gameboy. I wonder if I should pick up one of these games one of these days...

The DS didn't get any improvement in sales, the PSP did because there was a new colour released I believe. PS3 is back to its 11,000 home.

What? Most of the DS games are rather well done.

Dragon Quest V is my favorite Dragon Quest game.
I bought this remake on its release day last week.
It still sits, shrink-wrapped, in a taped-over plastic bag, in my man-purse (actually, a middle-school-boy-purse (a PUMA soccer bag)) eight days later.
I assume I'm not alone -- definitely at least half of those 644,000 people are probably in the exact same situation!

Looking forward to the day I get to play them myself. The DQ remakes, that is.
Also, imagine what DQIX will do when it finally comes into light. It will rain cute little blue slimes that day in Japan.

I'm guilty of importing DQV. I never played the original and the "growing up" concept sounded cool, so I let Play-Asia suck my wallet dry.
On a sadder note, it looks as though Evangelion Pachinko is soon to depart the list. I'm sure you're all crushed. :D

PSP still outsold the DS in a Dragon Quest week. That is impressive. Looks like the PSP rules the roost in Japan now.

@kratosfan:Two points.
1-It's a remake. Remakes of DQ and FF typically don't sell super mega well, but the fact that it moved 700K in a week is still impressive.
2-Most PSP buyers are people who already own DS's..or two or even three and are just now picking up the other system. The PSP may have ruled the sale charts in Japan for the last four months, but the DS is still selling 30-40k units every single week and keep in mind that if DS sales stopped -dead- today, it would take the PSP about 3 years at current sales levels to catch up. And when the new DQ game drops, PSP sales are going to go under the bus.

Seconding that Gundam, it's the fourth iteration of a rehash (See Dynasty Warriors), but since it's my personal first game in the series, I love it.

@ThomasTruong: I only recently got a PSP so I missed out on the other games, but from what I hear, this is the best of the series with total number of playable missions and Gundams/mobile suits. I love it so far, it's quickly becoming my favorite portable game ever.

are there still people out there saying that nintendo can only sell software?
i don't know if any of you listen to TWiT (This Week in Tech) podcasts. they covered E3 and had this chick who works for Qore. She claimed:
A.) Sony does not pay her bills;
B.) Nintendo can only sell software;
C.) Sony would sell the most consoles this cycle.
Other than their poor E3 coverage and obvious anti-nintendo bias; TWiT is a pretty good podcast

@Foxstar Sixtail:
Another point is while hardware sales are strong, PSP software sales are not. Outside Monster Hunter, what game has sold well in Japan? VGChartz list no other title selling a million units in Japan that doesn't start with Monster Hunter. Not even Crisis Core was able to break 800,000 units
[vgchartz.com]
While software support has been getting a bit better for the system in Japan, it's still trailing behind the DS, which is a shame because I would had loved to see these Final Fantasy remakes on that system.

I got my copy of DQV last week. As it's my favorite RPG ever I pre-ordered as soon as pre-ordering it became possible. Unfortunatly I haven't had any time to play more than 3 hours. I predict that DQIX will come out before DQVI remake. I hope the remake of VI uses the IX engine. It certainly was one of the few DQ games to actually have impressive graphics when it was originally released; it would be such a shame to use the same engine as the DQ IV and V remakes.

I am waiting for DQIV DS to come out in English, myself. I have never played a DQ game but distinctly remember looking longily at DQIV in Nintendo Power (back when it was DWIV, of course).
If I like that, I will certainly get DQV. Square Enix has my money like its 1998 again. Or, 1994 even.

@Innervate:That too. Developers are taking as much notice of how much software attachment sucks on the PSP as they are on the userbase.
Nothing will kill a PSP2 faster then limited developer support and people need to understand this while they are cheerfully downloading roms and stuff.
