E3 2008 Predictions: How'd We Do?
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:40 AM on July 31, 2008
Let's just say we shant be getting any job offers to be Michael Pachter's trusted aide, as our incorrect guesses about what we thought we'd see at E3 this year grossly outnumbered our correct ones. In our defence, we cast a wide net with our E3 '08 predictions, with some clearly outrageous bets that were ground more in fantasy than reality. Plus, E3 sucked.
While we were surprised to see a lack of X-waggle and to learn that Kid Icarus was a no-show, that Duffy performance clearly came out of nowhere. Hit the jump for the final tally and keep your eyes peeled for the winner — and possible tie-breaker — of our E3 Fantasy Betting Pool contest. Woot!
Microsoft shows off new Xbox 360 user interface
The Redmond giant announced the new, Cover Flow-like dashboard at its press conference, dubbing it the New Xbox Experience. Reaction was mixed, but as an anti-fan of the current, hideous Vegas-strip look and feel, I welcomed it with open arms.
Microsoft announces Avatars, its own version of the Mii
We obviously knew about Avatars weeks in advance of E3, thanks to the tissue-thin security at marketing research company Intellisponse. We even knew what they looked like. It's doubtful that if we hadn't gotten an early preview, we'd have cared about the new feature any more than we do right now.
At least one celebrity calls one of the music games shown off on stage by the wrong name.
Unfortunately for the Viacom folks who gave The Who a huge sum of money to play the Rock Band party at the Orpheum, Pete Townshend confused the game with its main competitor, the Guitar Hero series. An honest mistake!
Don Mattrick will not sport Peter Moore style tattoos
We didn't see any. Did you?
Grand Theft Auto IV spin-off for Nintendo DS and/or PSP announced.
One of the titles Nintendo touted as core focused was Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, a portable side story set in Liberty City. And it was merely announced, with nothing but a logo on display.
Nintendo will fail to announce a storage device for Wii, enraging the hardcore with another jovial, upbeat mass-market presentation including at least one head-scratcher peripheral.
Storage device? Nope. Jovial, upbeat mass-market presentation? Check. Head-scratcher peripheral? Wii MotionPlus might fit the bill, especially if you're a developer who wasted many man hours programming motion detection routines that can now be done with hardware.
One awkward, surprise celebrity walk-on will spawn its own internet meme for the coming age.
It may be a stretch to describe portions of Nintendo's media briefing as meme-spawning, but we're never going to forget the animated GIFs of DJ Ravi Drums wailing away on the air drums with Wii Music.
Finally, this one — Animal Crossing Wii gets stuffed animals with virtual keycodes — was almost correct, as Ubisoft announced that Petz branded stuffed animal with virtual keycodes, unlocking breeds in-game were due to be released. We take no pride in being almost right when it comes to Petz related topics.

@GTA4er: You can say that with a straight face after Sony just unveiled. . . Trophies!?
Look, if no one copied or took what others did and made it their own the world would be a boring shitty place.
There would be only shitty music by Bjork for one thing. . . Who wants that? Let people take ideas and make them own or better. It's okay. It's the creative process and it benefits us.

Its like Nintendo knows it has hardcore fans, but could care less about what they want. Quit rehashing same old Zelda, which really needs an evolution if you ask me, and bring back the old franchises. If Square-Enix can bring back Crono Trigger, Nintendo can bring back EarthBound.

I wonder why people are taking it so personally that Microsoft introduced features that are similar to the competition. Especially when we all know neither Sony or Nintendo is averse to the same type of shenanigans.

i meant that if Nintendo never made their avatars, Msoft and Sony wouldnt have made it either. but thats one of the many catches of the video game industry, if were gonna fight over who copies what. then we'd all be stuck in 1980's where if they had a driving game, you cant make another.
and i was trying to imply that im not a fanboy just trying to bash msoft. saying that msoft copied nintendo would get more flaming at me then saying msoft and sony copied nintendo. am i correct?

@Communist_Gamer: Pointing out that microsoft is a company that produces trash and has never pushed an original product in its history is not "company" bashing. And even if it were, what's wrong with bashing a company that has produced so many inferior products while strangling the market so that no one else could even get their toe in the door? A practice they are trying (and failing at so far, thankfully) to extend and replicate in the video game market.
Maybe you should try changing your name to fascist_gamer, because that's what you sound like.

@GTA4er: Have you ever used Windows Media Center? No? Well my good man, you should check it out. It seem to fit the XMB desceiption before there was ever XMB. It seems Microsoft decided to use a menu that they had already put to use in another of their very own software. I would rather support a company that donates more than 1 billion dollars U.S. to charity anually than one that doesn't give at all. Then again, since I am an anti-capitalist vegan protester of all things corrupt, I don't support any large corporation, Sony and Nintendo included. The only problem with all of that is I do collect video games so I must hold my tongue. Fanboy doesn't come into it when you have to deal with stupidity.

@Thorax: Fanboy has always been a negative term, similar to geek or the Japanese otaku. Or being fat. Just because there are people who say "I am proud to be fat" doesn't change that.
All of them (... excluding fat ...) mean a person who is extremely obsessed with something, which never is a good thing. For otaku and geek even the word origins show the negative connotation.
Finally, I consider myself being to old to be called boy, but that might be personal preference ....

@GTA4er: Here's the thing about that. Microsoft never said it was original. They admit fully that they are taking ideas from others and trying to implement them in their own way. So far they have been doing everything to fix their wrongs and doing what's needed to make their service more susceptible to the casual crowd while pleasing the hardcore.

Quite interesting that just now the same old arguments come up. By now even the stupidest idiot should have noticed that all ideas that are common in current gen, were at latest already developed in last gen (even though usually with less success)
- Online Multiplayer - PC online play, Sega DC
- Online games store (e.g. XBLA, PSN, WiiWare, Virtual Console) - Sega channel, Real Arcade
- motion control -trillions of devices over the last 20 years including Nintendo Powerglove and Microsoft Sidewinder devices
You might not have noticed but no matter which console you choose, all of them are mainstream (as in intended to make money) which means that there can hardly be experimental hardware. Experimental would be something like controlling it via eye movements. So per definition everybody copies everyone else - there is even a name for that: Best practices.
