EA Announces Free 'Biome' Prototype For Spore
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 7:40 AM on July 26, 2008
For those antsy for Spore, the September 7th launch date can't come soon enough — but while you're waiting, you can now check out a new spore prototype called Biome for free.
It's a "programmable cellular automata simulator" which EA says lets players make grid simulations à la SimCity. Fancy words in the announcement like "chemical stoichiometry" means Biome simulates changes that take place in cells when they're exposed to new variables, similar to the way some chemicals change their state when exposed to other chemicals.
EA says Maxis built prototypes like these initially to explore design directions for the game, and is now letting gamers mess with the machinery to check out some of these early ideas. More are set to be released in the coming weeks.
Full announcement after the jump.
EA News Alert
To whet Spore fans' appetites as the September 7th launch date draws near, the Maxis team has released BIOME, the latest in a series of early, concept defining Spore prototypes that are available for free play.
BIOME, which can be downloaded at http://community.spore.beta.online.ea.com/comm/prototypes, is a programmable cellular automata simulator that allows players to develop simple "SimCity-like" grid simulations. Inspired by John Conway's "Game of Life" program, BIOME uses a language based on chemical stoichiometry and simulates how cells change their state the same way that chemicals change when exposed to other chemicals. BIOME supports both rectangular and spiral cellular automata configurations.
Throughout the planning and development of Spore, Maxis explored countless design directions in gameplay, simulation and user interface. One of the ways in which they explored possible design directions was by building simple, playable prototypes that were used to get a sense for a particular system. Usually these prototypes are never seen by the public, but Maxis decided to give gamers a "golden ticket" to get an inside look at their creative process. Make sure to check back for more Spore prototypes in the coming weeks!
Spore gives players their own personal universe in a box. Create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt entire worlds and explore a universe created by other gamers. Spore gives players a wealth of creative tools to customise nearly every aspect of their universe: creatures, vehicles, buildings, and even UFOs. Players can then seamlessly share their creations with the world or explore infinite new galaxies created by other gamers.

I'd recommend people have a read of this page before playing around with this Biome tool. It'll take a few minutes and give you a great appreciation for the potential of cellular automata.

Ooh, this is interesting
@Pikadrew: Cellular automata just means a small compartment of simple rules (the cellular part) that multiplies to create a model of complexity (the automated part).

thank god it supports both rectangular AND spiral cellular automata configurations. Wouldn't even be a real cellular automata simulator otherwise.
See? I can use big words that don't mean anything too!

For some reason,I thought this would work for the vista on my computer.Vista sucks.Won't let me work. Thanks to Micro$ofts crappy work.I would have been getting the Mac,but I admit that is to expensive, but the thought XP would work, but nah, they didn;t had one.Well I had to pick on this down, now I get a error saying it dosen't run on your system due to requirements, and I believe they do meet them...
So,this sucks for me,you guyzzzz lucky :)

I get the feeling that I'll probably understand this better once I've finished taking Introduction to Biology this coming fall. Right now all the words and phrases describing what this thing actually does go right over my head.

These prototypes are just making people confused. Get them away, my brain!

I've been playing games for...a long time. I've been playing "sim" games for a long time.
I have the Spore Creature Creator on my computer and it's entertaining.
I've read this article twice now and I have no fuckin' idea what this is about.

I love all the excitement leading up to Spore's release. Can't wait to see what other prototype creatures they used to develop the game!
Also... I have a crush on Leigh...

What they mean with "prototypes" is just different software they are using to make Spore the great game it's gonna be! It's just like saying (insert random game here) uses the Unreal 3 engine for character models/physics, and uses a tree creator middleware for trees etc...
So when you get to play the actual game you are playing with different software all put into one. The "Biome" prototype is just some software that handles some aspect of the Spore game... It's not really something fun all in itself... not necessarily anyways.

It's not a Cellular Automata Simulator...
It's a Virtual Orgasmic Cellular Automata Murder Simulator.

@Kamesen: Actually prototypes are alternative, viable contestant to the final version of a software, garment, car and almost everything. When something is referred to as a prototype, it means it didn't make the final cut.
Since I've actually taken biology, I have to say this is very interesting. But I can see why they dropped it, even Kotakuites are getting confused hearing just the concept. Shame, really.

Sweet!
As a programmer this sounds right up my alley. A little concept-proving app.
...then, I even liked the DOS app to let you control a knight walking on a hex grid that came with Fallout 1... :p

I see this more as a Maxis move. EA is probably scratching their heads and wondering what the hell this stuff is.

I dig cellular automata. I've written a couple of implementations of Conway's Game of Life myself. But there's no mainstream appeal to something like this. What a totally weird, un-EA move.
