EA Showcasing BioWare's Dragon Age At E3 08, Gives It Fancy New Name
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:00 AM on July 10, 2008
EA just tipped us off to the fact that BioWare's long in the works PC role-playing game Dragon Age is going to be "one of the premiere titles" showcase at E3 next week, with select press getting hands on time with the game — which is a good thing, because I have an appointment to play the thing next Tuesday. If I showed up and it wasn't on display, it might get awkward.
You'll get your first look at Dragon Age this Friday, as first footage of the game will be featured on the next episode of GameTrailers TV on Spike.
The "highly anticipated dark fantasy epic" also has a new name, officially known as Dragon Age: Origins from this point forward.
The official Dragon Age web site continues to tease us with its promise of "More July 9, 2008". We hope they hurry it up, because there's not much July 9, 2008 left to spare.

@Korey: That's the title of the second game. And the third is going to be Dragon Age: Just After the Age of Dragons, but Right Before the Age of Something Else.

I kinda want a ridiculously long Oblivion rip-off. If this ends up being some 12 hour quest with no additional depth I'm probably not going to buy it, even after major price drops. But if it was long and tried to build on the Oblivion style in a new way, I would be ecstatic.

@Bonkerjerks:
Yes, now lets never speak of it again. I'm still sad that it'll never come out and that EA swallowed and neutered anything related to Origin and Ultima.

@Fadakar:
Yeah, now Bioware is going to talk it up like they've been planning it as a trilogy from the very beginning...
READ: "We've got so much content here, why just release it as a single 80 hour game when we can piece it out in sequels and dlc?"
It worked for Mass Effect. Still the only "serious" rpg to ship with what, 5 story-driven quests that took about an hour apiece to complete?
Welcome to the future of gaming, I guess.

Wow. Why do all the new game names sound so very generic?
Dragon Age: Origins
Sonic Unleashed
Captain Rainbow... wait...

EA must've done some serious research on the impact using a colon in your title has on a game's metacritic score.

@sarcasmOD: Oh wow. That's actually what I hope it won't be, the market is flooded with shallow action-RPGs as is, Fallout 3 looks to be no big exception there, sadly.
I know the chances are slim, but I hope that maybe - just maybe - a bit of Baldur's Gate glory will shine through this, in the form of complex, tactical combat, old-school dungeon creeping and content over presentation - unlike in Mass effect, which sacrificed way too much in order to look and sound good.

At least they didn't name it Dragon Age: Requiem. Or something Japanese sounding that makes little to no sense, like Super Dragon Go Force.

That new subtitle made it 43 times more generic. Bioware, you can do better than that. Plus, you can't call the first game in a series Origins. You wait until the series is dying, then you desperately try to revive it by hiring some no-name, no-talent developer to make the game for you, and you claim it will answer all the unanswered questions, even though nobody wanted them answered anyways.

What's it with subtitles anyway?
Dragon Age would've worked just fine.
Then, if they wanted to release an updated version of the game, they use a subtitle, like for Overlord... Hehe.

Bioware currently owns my soul.
Like, seriously. The CEO has it in a drawer in his posh Ikea style desk, along with the souls of a handful of other fanboys.
So that means that Bioware could announce Jack Thompson: A Guide to Insanity, and I would so totally buy eight copies of it.

Dragon Age is said to be the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate 2.
Therefore I'm hoping for extremely long and kickass story, multiple side quests, extremely deep character creation/party system, interesting and meaningful interactions with party members, all of it amounting to 200+ hours if you go through it all.
Even without all that, I'm buying it on day 1 and I'll enjoy it. I'm completely sold on Bioware games.

What is it with all these non-sequels having unnecessary subtitles? It's not like a generic term like "Origins" tells you much about the game by itself anyway.

@Syril:
both the fact that it has a subtitle and the word itself, "origins", point to it being the first in a planned series.
