EA To Release 'Proper' Games On iPhone?
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:30 PM on July 15, 2008
EA already have games on the iPhone, and already have plans for more games (like Spore, for example). But they're mostly like the ones they've currently got on other mobiles: cheap, disposable casual games. During their E3 address earlier today, however, the company announced plans to release games like Tiger Woods and Need for Speed on the iPhone (and iPod Touch). While they didn't get into specifics, when you consider the horsepower of the iPhone compared to other mobiles, the chances of these games being ports of PSP games seem high. The chances of people buying them regardless are also high. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, because really, Tiger Woods PSP but with swingy finger control would be pretty nifty.

I'm sort of confused by this whole situation, honestly. Coming out the doors and saying, "Hey, we've got Spore! It's the special 320x480 Facsimile Edition!" just doesn't seem all that impressive. Why would I be at all enthused about playing a miniaturized version of something that will pull at all of my PC system resources?
Maybe Monkey Ball's where it's at, cause it's not like I played it eight years ago or anything.

I can picture it now...
"Hey honey, I just bought Tiger Woods from the app store!"
"Great."
"No, look, it's got motion sensing and everything, just like the Wii!"

Using a phone as a gaming platform? Brilliant!

Proper isn't good enough, I want some "right proper" games...
Oh, and Tiger with swingy finger control would be pretty cool.

Watching this E3 is like watching a game of naked Twister. Everyone's junk is all up on everyone else's junk, and some of them have a financial obligation to enjoy it.

I still don't think the iPhone is a truly viable gaming platform.
It'll be pretty fun for a while, but I'd be surprised if company's really put effort into programming for it.
Also, Relase in the title should be "Release."

EA is just learning how to release proper games on current gen consoles, the iPhone is a bit out of their league.

It looks like it'd be kinda weird to play need for speed on an iphone. I don't own one so I can't really say much else.

To be honest, meh. The only "gaming" I do on my iPhone is some fine ass Bejeweled or Tetris while I wait for someone/something. And really, that's all I need. =)
Besides, touch isn't a very intuitive peripheral as far as gaming goes.

The iPhone has potential, but forgive me if I think EA is just going to botch things up with crappy ports. I don't blame them, as they're obviously a business looking to earn some green.. But something tells me iPhone gaming will not be anywhere near a priority.
Call me a skeptic, but I think with little to no buttons on the thing, gaming will be widely one dimensional. It's one thing to offer touch-gaming, but to have it required really ruins the immersion of games - or rather, it deviates from the standards that we have known since the conception of videogaming itself. While the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS do offer new ways of gaming, they also do not forego traditional buttons, which serve as a throwback and a valid option for gamers to use.
The iPhone hardware definitely has the horsepower for good gaming, but the simple lack of variety in input totally kills that off.

EA's Scrabble is not a cheap disposable game. It rocks and my gf won't give my ipod touch back because she's addicted to it.

Whats with the negative comments here though? I bought monkey ball and it is hard to control but thats the developers fault. I also got crash nitro and there isnt much different between it and a psp game. I see tons of potential and these are just first gen games. Remember first gen games on any gaming platform usually arent great games compared to a year later. Some of you may use a phone for other things but the iphone is not an Ngage. It has support of every major developer, or at least will in the near future. I dont own a psp or a ds but i do own the iphone and i will buy games for it all the time since i was impressed with crash and monkey ball.

I'm with you on the touch interface. So far, I'm spending the most time with Bejewelled -- Scrabble is also a natural fit interface-wise -- my somewhat challenged vocabulary not withstanding ("quitch" is a word? wtf?).
Bomberman, hmm... nice idea with the virtual buttons on the screen, but not sure how that would work with something more modern and fast. I would spend the money on a peripheral with physical controls, if that existed.
Monkeyball... how did they let this out without more testing? Too hard to control in tricky situations -- needs an 'idiot' mode imho -- 'Easy' mode really isn't that easy to control. Controls are sloppy. The accelerometer-based interface is challenging, in my opinion, to implement well.

Phones are bad platforms because there will always be a huge majority that may not even be ABLE to play your game.
That said, this thing is making me less and less certain of that. Still, I think at best it will be a big niche and will surely make some serious cash.
One thing I'll have to get the second I get any of those systems though is Hudson's iPhone Trix
