Fall Brings Battle Fantasia To North America
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:00 AM on July 8, 2008
Arc System Works' latest fantasy fighting game is coming to the Xbox 360 this Fall courtesy of Aksys Games, the publisher that would have a much more interesting name if you just switched two letters. Battle Fantasia, already released in Japan on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, blends Arc's trademark high-end fighting with RPG flair, with beautiful cell-shaded characters designed by Guilty Gear artist Emiko Iwasaki. The console version of the game comes complete with an exclusive story mode, along with more than 80 unlockable illustrations to collect as you play.
"Battle Fantasia's helps bring the fighting genre to the mainstream with its RPG-style appeal," said Frank "Bo" deWindt II, Project Lead, Aksys Games. "If the fighting aspects don't hook you, the quirky characters and their stories will".
Great news, but where's the PlayStation 3 version for North America? Separate press release I missed? Perhaps it's a surprise?
BATTLE FANTASIA RUMBLES ONTO XBOX 360 IN FALL OF 2008
A Fighting Game of RPG Sized Proportions!
Torrance, CA (July 3, 2008) - Aksys Games, a publisher of interactive entertainment products, announced today that Battle Fantasia will be battling its way onto Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Fans of the fighting game genre can expect to see this high tension fighter in the fall of 2008.
Developed by ARC SYSTEM WORKS, creators of the highly popular Guilty Gear series, Battle Fantasia utilizes RPG-stylish elements and blends them with high level gameplay. Players will also be able to pick between 12 beautifully illustrated characters by Emiko Iwasaki, and battle it out in front of gorgeous high-definition 3D environments.
"Battle Fantasia's helps bring the fighting genre to the mainstream with its RPG-style appeal," said Frank "Bo" deWindt II, Project Lead, Aksys Games. "If the fighting aspects don't hook you, the quirky characters and their stories will".
Battle Fantasia Prologue
There was once a time when the world was engulfed in darkness. Mankind fought six battles to save their world, but lost every single one. All hope was lost for humanity and many turned to god with prayers. But one day the darkness was finally driven back by the swords of four heroes.
Light returned to the world, and with it came peace and serenity. The world was then divided into two major countries: The Magic Kingdom and the Steam Empire. The people prospered like never before...
But in recent months, strange things have begun to happen. Rumours spread among the people that the darkness was returning...
However, fate has once again brought together warriors from all over the world. Some fight in the relentless pursuit of justice. Some fight due to their conviction and faith.
As the battle looms near, an epic new tale of new heroes begins to unfold...

I was at Anime Expo this year and attended this Aksys Panel which included them showing off this game plus a short Q&A.
I asked specifically about the PS3 version and they said and I quote, "We are looking into it" to which my frustrated response was to go later to the dealer's room and buy the JPN version. I already have friends with the JPN version and want the chance to play it.
I will admit I think I pissed the Aksys guys off at the end of the Q&A session when they asked if any more questions I shouted out "Get to work on the PS3 version!"
They totally ignored me during the prize give away at the end.

@push eject: I... I don't think they're listening. :(
But seriously folks, I got it from YesAsia for just under $60 with free shipping. Cheaper than with tax and transportation! So you won't understand the story mode text til someone posts some kind of story guide somewhere, and you maybe miss out on a goofy dub. But if you're actually interested in playing the game, you can do it right now! I highly recommend you do!

Win! I'm not sure if it'll ever make it to the UK, so instead I'm hoping for an import friendly version (which I guess would be the PS3 game. Dammit), but still great news. It looks like a pretty damn interesting switch on the fighting game formula, like Scarlet Weather Rhapsody was before it.

@cio:
What makes you think all these exclusives are paid? your delusional if you think ms just throws money around to get exclusives of every game they can, especially with a niche game like this. Reality is the company probably just didnt feel the market was as good on the PS3 in the US, thus it probably wasnt a viable business decision to pay for the licensing to both versions. Who knows, maybe someone else will bring the PS3 version over to you guys in NA, but as of now this is what it seems you get.
That said, I played the demo on the PSN when it came out and kinda enjoyed it, but not enough to go pick up the game.

@RuneX21: It has nothing to do with what sells or doesn't sell on the 360. While I believe the assumption that the 360 crowd is predominantly interested in titles with a more Western bent is true, my statement has more to do with the fact that I simply think the 360 is a shitty system. Ergo, Battle Fantasia is wasted on the 360. As others have mentioned, the 360 d-pad sucks as well...but that's neither here nor there.

Quit your whinning fanboy. You can import the PS3 version now to play since it's region-free. Whereas, the US 360 owners will have to wait for the Western release, being that Arc Systems decided to region-lock both the Japan & Asian versions (yet again).

Neither BlazBlue or this game should be exclusive to either console. Though, granted, I feel that the majority of people that play RPG's usually have a PS3 and not an XBox 360, so sometimes I don't understand this RPG exclusivity towards the XBox 360.

@Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic:
Why do people think these games are wasted on the 360? Where does this so called myth that no "jrpgs", "anime based games", "2D titles" , appear or sell on the 360 but apparently would sell great on the PS3 come from?
As far as I can tell, the 360 has far more of all of those titles than the PS3, infact the PS3 has yet to recieve an decent jrpg yet people insist that its the console of choice for jrpgs. In this case, we have a fighter which is on the PS3(and the story mode is good for those who dont understand japanese, well, good for afighter so by importing you kinda are missing a lot if you dont understand the language) but also on the 360. It didnt sell that well in japan for either platform, but the odds of it selling in the us based on historical evidence will be marginal at best, but id say that the 360 would provide more sales opportunities in the US(plus they probably got cheaper licensing for it) which is probably why thier isnt an announcemtn yet regarding a ps3 ver in the US.
In anycase, its getting old people making assumptions that the entire market must follow the same purchasing patterns each generation. As of now, sony is not hte place for 2D, anime styled, or jrpgs and thats just the way it is.

Well, Aksys isn't the smallest publisher out here. They're small, but they're not minuscule. Considering all they're doing is translating and distributing the game, which is something that could probably easily be done for both titles simultaneously, the burden isn't nearly as huge as it would be for something like a Lost Odyssey.
They could handle both, and that's why it's odd that it seems they aren't.

Oh, cool. I was in Chinatown the other day, and the guys at J&L had this game playing on their huge flat-screen HDTV, and it made me seriously consider purchasing it for the PS3. I was surprised how fluid it was for a 2.5D fighter, and now it's coming to the states? Sold. Arc-System Works may like to rehash Guilty Gear X2 till doomsday, but they make solid fighters, and if X2 is any indication, they can make one hell of a story mode as well. This is right up their alley. A new fighter from them always good news to me.

I got the game right after it hit and I've been playing it since, so I don't exactly feel "screwed over" or anything, but I do understand the complaints of those who want the English voice acting and story mode dialogue and feel a bit betrayed. It is a shitty move to do this with no explanation of the situation at all, and it happens more often than I'm comfortable with.
The truth of the matter is that I would pick it up again, but perhaps they figure they've already lost their few potential PS3 sales? It could be a valid concern. I'd just like to hear exactly why from them, y'know?

As for an American PS3 version? Why bother? The menus are in English and if you really want the story just look up a translation, I don't even see why this is coming to America at all. *Sigh* Aksys Games does it again.
First off, guys, they're showing BlazBlue off at some cons as part of a tour, so it's simple to assume that they plan on bringing it out. [www.animenewsnetwork.com]
Second, there will likely not be a PS3 version of Battle Fantasia hitting American shores. Why? Because they refused to bring over the Xbox 360 version of Castle of Shikigami III, despite the versions being identical apart from menus which are already in English in the Japanese version anyway (yes, including achievements, too!)
Basically, they're unwilling to commit to full licensing. They claim issues such as funds, which also lead to them not licensing CoS3's Japanese voice-overs; why are they licensing games from Japan in the first place then? It's an expensive business! They're even part of the niche market, which makes their excuses even more bewildering.
Basically, unless they sell boatloads of copies of the 360 version, they aren't going to want to waste more money on a PS3 version license.

@okenny :): My careless, dismissive comments? I said "paid exclusive" in quotations, (which nobody seemed to catch on to, might I add) and people jumped on my dick. I'm not here to make friends with everybody, but I'm also not about to take shit from stupid people on the internet who throw out unwarranted insults. I refuse to believe that my original statement was thoughtless. I made an ironic statement regarding a situation that is quite commonplace in the gaming industry, and I expressed disappointment that a game I was interested in playing isn't going to be available on my console of choice. I think that's fair enough. Really I come here because I want to read information on video games. Occasionally I try to make a funny comment, or give an opinion. It's too bad that some people here are so sensitive over issues as trivial as a video game console that I (or anyone else) should have to walk on eggshells to avoid hurting their feelings. It's not like this is a holocaust denial blog.
