First Look At PAIN Amusement Park Add-on
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 7:00 PM on July 9, 2008
If you haven't had enough PAIN, Sony and developer Idol Minds are bringing more with an amusement park themed add-on. In PAIN: Amusement Park, players can fling their ragdolls around, well, an amusement park. As Sony producer Travis Williams explains:
This time you can invite your friends to join you. We have online multiplayer capability so you can finally pit your skills against other people on the PLAYSTATION NETWORK. We also support the new PlayStation Trophies. This might be useful to see how awesome your competition is before you challenge them to a PAIN game.
There's a trailer right up there which should illuminate further. Moving pictures always help, we find.

At 00:25 is that a reference to Gamespot?

@FreekyDeeky: I'll take those 30+ points now. :p I loved Scorched Earth.
Ontopic: I'd love to have a game like this for the PC or 360. I never tire of throwing ragdolls at breakable objects.

@FreekyDeeky: I loved scorched earth, this game on the other hand...I don't know why it gets touted as the premier PSN title.

PAIN is the worst PSN game I've played, it's just downright not fun. And instead of trying to improve it faster, the developers dick around by adding a bunch of useless character models each week for a buck.
I'm sorry, but how about they try to make the game FUN before they go for the add-ons?
And the thing that annoys me the most is how they're probably going to charge like what? $5.99 for this add-on, even though it should have been included in the game in the first place.

Am I missing the point? PSN seems to love this game. I received a free purchase with my MGS4 bundle but while mildly amusing at first, I don't think I last more than half an hour on this game. Is there a diehard devoted fan community out there reminiscent of "Scorched Earth?" LOL (30+ Kotaku brownie points for everyone who recognizes that game's name.)

I kind wanted a better camera system... something that shows off the destruction and allows you to see whats coming (nudge nudge boom.. no not sexual innuendo.. oh i give up)

@DigiMish: Ditto. This shit should be free. 10$ was NOT worth what I got.

Well I like the game and I will get this add-on. The only thing I dislike is that I have to pay for additional characters... they should be free :/

Jeeze people, for the amount of cash you have to spend on this I think it's kinda fun. Good enough for a few laughs. I have yet to try it, but I'm sure it'll be a fun party game too.

@element7:
It has an integrated "achievement" system. I guess that's why I always return to play it.

Looks pretty fun, but I agree with the norm when I say I can't possibly be entertained for more than 10 or more minutes with this. Unless all my games just happened to not work and I was locked inside with no Cable TV; highly unlikely.

I threw out 8 Euros on this game and I can say it was the worst pruchase for a long time. I spent maybe one hour with it before boredom nearly made me fall asleep... Hell freezes over before I waste more money on this game!

it's alright as a type of party game. but if you're playing it on your own there's no fun to it whatsoever.

I purchased this game...I even got an extra character for it. It's ok and pretty fun I guess, but don't expect me to buy anymore add ons. I think the game should have come with more characters and stages in the first place. So yeah that's it, I'm not getting any more stuff for PAIN.

If you're playing PAIN by yourself... you're missing out.
I felt the same way about the title... downloaded it when it came out, played with a little, let it molder in my PSN Games section...
Then... well, I had a party, and when everyone got tired of Rock Band or whatever we were doing, PAIN got the "what's that?" treatment.
We spent the rest of the night tea bagging the old lady in front of the subway and dying laughing.
Stupid? Yes. Immature? Absolutely. Fun? It was then.
That, and I love the bowling mode. That's the best part of the game, in my opinion... Great "eff your buddy" type game... one that my wife won't even play with me anymore.

Pain is an $8 game that I paid $10 for. Not much of a ripoff compared to some, and I've had my kicks out of it. It might just be worth $10 if there was a 2nd environment to throw around the little punk.

@shade-black: @Vodun:
The game only makes a good party game if you have two or more people in a room who know actually how to play.
The problem is that it's not a pickup-and-play type of game. You must play the though the tutorial before you even have the slightest clue how to do anything and the tutorial is loooooooooong. Took my friend like 45 minutes.
Thus leaving it stranded in the realm of single playerdom.
A party game MUST be casual(drunk accessible) to be a successful party game.
The devs need to apply some real world direction to their game mechanic decisions.

I also wonder why this game gets the treatment it does by Sony. They treat it like it is absolute greatness, but so many things are really not right. It is not the deepest of games and admittedly it doesn't try to be, but it had a very limited number of people choices and only one location. It should have shipped with at very least one more location and maybe even double the characters. I think that they should give people a little more than what they did without charging again.

pain is pretty fun, but i agree that i did not get $10 value in this game.
only 1 level (downtown) to mess around in, and a couple characters??? GTFO.
so is the amusement park the 2nd level? or are there more that i missed?

Some people criticize this game, but what do expect from the game? It's simple, and fun. Do you expect it to be some "Halo" epic thing? It is just as simple fun game, and i've been waiting for theme park.

Wow, not a lot of Pain fans here, eh? I love the thing. I kept pushing for a high score (only got up to place 113 or so on the list) for months and right when I got tired of it (i.e. when GTAIV came out) they released the big update.
Now this too? I can't wait, especially since they're FINALLY adding online multiplayer. My father-in-law and I should have a blast. Though he's way ahead of me on point scoring (he hit #1 and now is sitting somewhere in the top 5).
I <3 destruction and ragdoll. A lot.

i really like Pain. sure, i can see why CoD4/instant action fans might not dig it, but it's really not THAT bad. yeah, one map was weak sauce, i'll admit. it was getting hard to keep playing for a while. but, with the different modes like fun with explosives (the mode i play the most) and with the new amusement park level, i'm still interested in playing it.
it's a good cool down game. after i've been playing alot of MGS4 or warhawk, i like playing it for a few before i'm done. i think people are being harder on the game then they have to be. being pissed off about downloadable games: the new black....

@FreekyDeeky: Scorched Earth.. Heh heh heh.. Who didnt love a perfect MIRV placement, wiping out several enemies at once? Or the Napalm strike...mmm..Napalm..
PAIN doesnt look that bad.. Sure, nothing overly fancy... but you get to blow stuff up! and people go flying!

Damn so much hate for this game. I think its quite fun and I couldn't be happier with it. People saying it only has 1 level are making it sound worse than it is. Yeah its one level but at first you had 2 different layouts and a bunch of mini-games to play. Now after the update a couple months ago you have a couple more layouts to play with. The in-game trophies add a lot of play to the game because it makes you do things you never would've thought about doing (like last night I spent a good hour or more trying to get all of Dick's balls in the trash bins). Its a simple game and people are acting like it should be a huge blockbuster. I'm sure the new online feature should make it more appealing too

Yeah, scorched earth, wasted so much time on that game. I remember editing the text files for what the tanks would say in word star with my mom at her work. Anyone else do that? I think we need scorched earth or a 2d worms game on Wii Ware with multiplayer. Not some big boxed release, keep it simple.

@tokyoshi: Sorry, but that's a pretty fucking stupid question. People don't need Halo-quality games to be amused, they just need a game that delivers for the price you paid for it. This game failed to do that. That's it. It doesn't need to be Halo. It needs to be fun. And it isn't.
RobKramble

@RobKramble: Delivering for the price you pay for it is relative. If some kid has to save a months allowance to play a game and it only has 10 minutes of fun then yes, the game didn't deliver. However, if $10 really isn't that much to you then it doesn't much content to live up to it. Personally, I got my $10 worth and I'll gladly spend another $10 on the new level. Especially if it's as full of sexual innuendos as the last one... Hilarious!

Count me among the PAIN fanatics on PSN.
Yes, its best as a Party Game, and Yes, its best if people have been drinking, but I also must admit staying up WAAAY too late on several evenings trying to get "just one more" bounce, blast, ooch, or grab.
Its true that you cannot instantly pick up the game and be good at it. Perhaps this explains some of the hate out there. It requires a completely different mindset and skillset vs. most games.

My personal problem with Pain was the "ooch" system. Specifically, how your accumulated "ooch" letters would disappear without explanation as quickly as they appeared, then reappear, etc.
Particularly the "super ooch"- I would make me so irritated- shaking the controller and aquiring it, then it just disappearing after one tenth of a second.
Anyone else consider that element of the game "broken" and give up in frustration?
