Five Games That Matter In Hideo Kojima's Life
Five games that made an impact on the life of Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima? According to the famed game designer:
• Super Mario Bros.
• Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken
• Xevious
• Another World
• Metal Gear Solid
This list comes from a Yomiuri Newspaper article called "All About Kojima Hideo" dated June 11th. We haven't seen the full article (only that picture we found on a Yomiuri blog), and the English translation of Yomiuri article glosses over these five games and what they mean to him. From the pic we found, it certainly appears as though Kojima explained how they affected him.

Those are probably the only games he ever played.

Of all the games I have ever played and had a lasting feel for, even to this day, it would have to be Another World / Out of this World. One of the few games that makes me teary-eyed when I hear the ending theme song. It's good to know a Japanese developer that feels so much more worldly actually played a lot of foreign games himself (Ditto for Suda51)

Would love to see it on all three arcade set ups. Thanks for the heads up on that site. Was going to purchase, but I may hold off until something gets sorted out.

I tried buying Another World off the anotherwrold.fr site, instead what I got was something called Pro Cycling Manager -- What a cruel joke! I haven't looked into to it yet, I'll request another download and see what happens.
I've been dying to play the game for such a long time. I just wish Eric Chahi would put it on PSN or XBLA or WiiWare already. In the mean time I'll be playing my used copy of Heart of Darkness.

@Chagrin: That's the title of this blog post, not the source article, @NeoStarr: and I can't find anything remotely like that quote in the article. @KeroseneClimax: It does however explicitly ask him for "influential" games, and it would be taking liberties with the word in the context of the article to suggest they don't simply mean artistically and not circumstantially.
With all due respect to my peers on this site, I really wish one would check the source before providing a counterpoint.

Does Metal Gear Online have LAN support?

I'm quite surprised to see him list Out of This World. I am such a huge fan of that game and when I got it for Christmas when it first came out the game blew me away. I don't see it get the credit it often deserves. I felt it was probably the most immersive games I have ever played when I got a hold of it. The atmosphere and the game play of the game made one feel they were really in it.

Another World was so amazing when I was a kid. I was so happy when I finally beat that damn game.
Wubbytoes
No FREAKING WAI. I completely forgot about Out of this World, that is a gem!.
PsycheE
Another World was awesome!! Hideo has some good taste.
Trowble (XBL/PSN)
Like others have said, it's amazing he like Another World. Such a big influence for me too, in terms of mood and such.
Laughin_Caulk
I was thinking he was going to say one of the game was Jade Raymond...I mean assassin's creed.
karateka
Another world was amazing for its time but gamelay is harsh for nowadays standards. The crazy thing about the game is that it was coded by a single guy in his bedroom on his atari. I know, I am a bit of a delphine software fanboy.
Fabrice
Dammit now I have to get another world!!
I don't think theres any dev's who haven't been influenced by Mario in one way another, whether its Super Mario Bros or Super Mario 64 there all awesome

@jonomcleish:
Yes Heart of the Alien was an awful game, especially if compared to the original Another Word, one of the greatest games ever.
I bought the remake version of AW right after its been released, but i still prefer playing the SegaCD version with Gens emu, because of the quicksave/quickload function ^_^'
neojam
@EnigmaNemesis: i remember playing Out of This World back on the genesis... and thinking to my self.... this is the future of gaming. MGS1 to me replicated that epicness that OOTW had started.
one of the most brilliant games ever made. Kojima is a man of good taste.

@CaptCHAOS: Into what? FPS?
cowondinosaur
What? Those games are a lie! I read a while ago in a magazine that Hideo's favourite game is "Crash Bandicoot 3". Where the hell did you get that bullshit from?
Gentleman
@Swift_: The article stated what games made an impact on his life in general, not what games inspired him. After the success of Metal Gear Solid, it can safely be said his life changed significantly because of that game.
An interesting tidbit from the article is his admission of enjoying the new Rambo movie that came out earlier this year. It's interesting considering the parallels between that film and MGS4.
KeroseneClimax
@ArgentAngel:
And Miyamoto wouldn't say Mario, or Zelda, or Donky Kong?
Seriously!
EnigmaNemesis
@ArgentAngel: Well, its kind of his thing. Like without MGS, we wouldn't really know this man. Metal Gear was his big break. Sure, he had other games, too, but those other games weren't a Metal Gear...
DONNYchiban
Ah, Another World. That was a sweet game back in the days. Fuckin' hard though, and the sequel (Flashback) wasn't any easier, from what I remember.

I REALLY don't like Xevious. I have no idea why, since I typically love top down shooters like that, but Jesus do I not like playing that game.

Sequels
Eric Chahi has stated that he wishes the game to have no sequels as he wants the ending to the original to remain ambiguous so that fans could make their own conclusion to the franchise.[citation needed] Despite this, an official sequel entitled Heart of the Alien was released for the Sega CD in 1994. The game is similar in visual style to Another World. The player takes control of the alien (nicknamed "Buddy" by the manual) who befriends the protagonist in the original game and the backstory to the game is elaborated on. It is commonly mistaken for a midquel, probably due to the presence of (monochromatic) flashbacks in the game's introduction, which show the events of the first game during portions where Buddy and Lester were separated. Chahi had nothing to do with the development of the game, beyond suggesting Lester's death, but has since regretted that decision stating that he did not like it because it made a definite conclusion to the story, which he had deliberately left open-ended.[4]
The 1992 game Flashback and its 1995 sequel Fade to Black (both also from Delphine), were often mistaken for sequels to Another World because of similar gameplay and graphics. However, these games have nothing to do with Another World, except said similarity in graphics or gameplay and had completely different stories. Both games were also made without the involvement of Chahi. Flashback does seem to make a few direct references to Another World, including the prominent use of personal force fields in combat, nearly identical "THE END" text (in the final cinematic), and an almost exact recreation of the gun pickup cinematic.
Eric Chahi returned to the concept after leaving Delphine. In 1998 he and his new company Amazing Studio made Heart of Darkness, which is in many ways very similar in spirit to Another World, although it, too, has a different storyline.
Eric Chahi disappeared from the game industry for some years, but may have recently regained interest in making games. He attended the Game Developer's Conference in 2005.[5] Despite criticizing the games industry for no longer supporting much creativity, Eric Chahi says he is "still very excited" to start working on an entirely new game.
In an issue of Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, Japanese game designer Fumito Ueda cited Another World as an influence for his creation of Ico for the PlayStation 2.
Now I know why I loved ICO so much!
I would love if Chahi did another new kind of idea on the current consoles.

Another World (Out of the World) ...
FANT-F*ING-TASTIC!
One of the most brilliant games EVER created.
LOVE the series!

good memory flashback on this one :)

What Japanese video game master worth his weight in sake wouldn't have Mario mattering in his life?
Frank
Another world, yeah!
ajiezer
The first time i played Another World was when i was 3 years old, the first level scared the shit out of me. Now that i'm 19 I really love this game and FlashBack too, they are one of the best games ever.
Sojiroh
i remember playing Out of this world. at least that was my version of the game. i loved it i only got to the beast part but that was epic.
Dakobah
jonomcleish - don't even bother trying to find or play it the sequel was very poor and Eric Chahi wasn't really involved with it anyway. He was faxed the occasional level design to which they ignored his comments, that should give you an indication to his involvement and before it was finished he already knew it stunk.
He actually told a French gaming news site that interviewed him a few years back that just pretend the sequel does not exist and the game ends with the first one as that was where he wanted it left at.
Jellocakes
Super. Get the HD version of Another World, [www.anotherworld.fr]
We need Eric Chahi making games again!
doctorwily
Heh, somebody should have said "Hideo you can't pick your own games" before asking just to give us another interesting one at #5, but huge props on picking Xevious, one of my favorite shmups ever!
DaiMacculate
never mind...just read kidnicky's comment..it was that game! :p
Danathjo
@Swift_: well Shiggy usually gives props to his garden or perhaps his wives cooking for inspiration for game ideas...go figure
Also, not sure if i've ever played Xevious before? I'm guessing it's nothing like a certain shmup also starting with X?
Danathjo
Another World was fantastic but to me my favorite game from Eric Chahi was Future Wars.
zoesch
I've still never beaten that damn mothership thing in Xevious!!! It pisses me off because I've beaten way more advanced shmups, like from Raizing/8ing and the like, but Xevious is still so hard to me.
The DS version is the coolest because you can simulate screen burn-in and you can have the bottom screen tell you the locations of the hidden flags.
kidnicky
@Swift_: I believe the rest of the article reads something like "Metal Gear Solid was a huge inspiration for me because it gave me the funds I needed to make more Metal Gear Solid games. Without the first one, I'd probably still be doing text adventures on my TI-83 today."
This post has turned into continuous praise for Out of This World. Apparently I'm the only person in the free world who didn't enjoy it. I mean, it looks good and it's very cinematic, sure; but come on- you step on the wrong crack in the floor and you have to restart the last twenty minutes you played for the hundredth time.
NeoStarr
I remember buying my friend Another Worlds SNES named buddy Out of this World for his birthday. Lots of death and laughing at crotch-kicking ensued.
An Australian accomplice of mine via WoW mentioned playing this game during a raid, but did refer to it as Another World. Went on to complain about dying too much and I told him it's just like when you're raiding now isn't it.
wolfeditor
Aside from SMB and MGS he has crazy taste in games.
Gon
Nice to see Another World (or Out of This World) getting some much-deserved attention. That's easily one of my favorite Genesis games of all-time, and it's a shame that it's often forgotten in favor of games like Flashback.

@Swift_:
Read the title again. "Five Games That Matter in Hideo Kojima's Life". I'm pretty sure Metal Gear Solid counts, being as it's how he makes a living. :P
Chagrin
Xevious on Atari was the first game I ever fell in love with.
etchasketchist
Metal Gear Solid..? Are you kidding me? That's terribly immodest.
Miyamoto would never cite his own games as inspiration.... but then what would he cite, having made most of the first games and being a vocal opponent of Sega game design?
Swift_
@Shiryu: Was that scrolling text intro in all versions? I can't remember what version I played (probably AtariST or Mac), but I don't recall that scrolling text. The rest was pure and extreme nostalgia though. Another World truly is a masterpiece that does survive the test of time. If they would bother to do a remake of it, it would be blasphemy to do anything else than just sharpen up the rendering.
There's been few games ever that has had that pure magic that Another World had... kept you breathless from beginning to end, and was even harder to put down than a Discworld book.
The Whaleman
@jonomcleish: Cheers mate, knew there was some connection there somewhere, never played the game though. Thought of getting it on PSN but I reckon it would be heavily in need of nostalgia to enjoy.
Danathjo
Out of this world (Another World) is also a game I will never forget. I remember playing it on my parents first computer. So strange and cool at the same time.
FREAKHEAD
I kinda figured that MGS1 was, seeing how huge the tribute was in MGS4.
Scuba Steve
@Danathjo: Fade to Black was the sequel to Flashback...
jonomcleish
played another world on genesis.. good fucking times indeed. the man has taste i tell ya.
@CaptCHAOS: he already did. go play mgs4.
zanzibarlegend
He loves Another World?!
That's it, I'm ditching my fiancee and have officially gone gay for Kojima.
Tyber_Zann
never got very far with Another World but god I loved Flashback...would scopp that up on the VC in a heartbeat. Also...was 'Fade to Black' sort of related to these games at all?
Danathjo
The sequel to Another World was Heart of the Alien for the Sega Mega-CD...
Anyone ever play it?
I tried it on an emulator and never got into it... :(
jonomcleish
he needs to expand his horizon.
CaptCHAOS
The only real connection between Flashback and Another World are that they both had pretty rotoscoped animation.
I've always kind of grouped them together in my mind, but aside from the animation (which is only similar in the basest sense) they really couldn't be much more different. The simplest way to put it is that Flashback was very videogamey, and Another World was very not.
frostcircus
@DukeOfPwn: Really? Most Japanese gamers his age were at one point really into Xevious...
Brian Ashcraft
Another World was awesome!
Flashback even better - one of my favourite games ever!
As Antiterra says, it's not a sequel... it's just made by the same people and is the same style of game...
jonomcleish
@Antiterra:
Thanks for the Information, now I know better ;)
tormenta3001
@tormenta3001: As someone is bound to tell, allow me to be that someone and say: Flashback is not Another World's sequel. Which doesn't make it any less of a great game - I think it was the first game I played for half a day straight.
Antiterra
I picked up Another World on the SNES back in the day and it blew my mind. I remember thinking that it don't get any better than this.
Now if any game is deserving of a remake its this one.

Another World was indeed amazing.. good Amiga Times.
Flash Back was a sequel, was pretty good too, I did enjoy it... but Another World is a Cult Game for sure. I could watch the Intro one Zillion times.. so nice.
tormenta3001
The dude who made it did a remake with better graphics without sacrificing any of the charm of the original. It's like $5 and worth every penny
check it out [www.anotherworld.fr]
Jambolia
Another World was amazing, I'll never forget the beginning bit having to run all the way to the right, to run all the way back again getting chased by a beast and then jumping off the cliff onto the rope as the beast jumps off too and falls away. Good times, good times.
Just to confirm, Flashback was a loose sequel wasn't it? Albeit a very very loose sequel
Dannon
Maaan Another World. Talk about nostalgia. Well, that game scared the shit out of me when I was a kid, so I never got too far in it haha. And I never got my hands on it again. It's so damn long ago.
Pepek
The choices that suprised me the most were Xevious and Super Mario Bros.
DukeOfPwn
Metal Gear Solid... how obvious...
ArgentAngel
So Kojima loves a game with wonderful cinematography and atrocious gameplay. Talk about playing right into his detractors' hands.
frostcircus
Another World was great. Remember finding it incredibly hard though!
TheSpiller
What no Gears of War or RockBand? What does this guy know about gaming...
:p

Really nice to see Another World touched so many people from so many places. Even Suda 51 references it as a landmark title in his professional life.
Im very happy to have it on it's original version, for the Commodore Amiga. Eric Chahi, I salute you.
