Forza Developer Pushing Xbox 360
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 6:00 PM on July 10, 2008
The old adage is that as a developer gets more familiar with a platform the better able it is to wring every last drop out of it. Forza developer Turn 10 is apparently doing that on what's believed to be Forza Motorsport 3. According to Turn 10 community manager Che Chou:
here's stuff being worked on here at Turn 10 that I simply can't talk about right now, but the progress we've made in the last six months has been absolutely incredible. The fact that we're working on our second game for Xbox 360 means our software architects have figured out ways to push the 360 in ways I didn't think were possible in terms of both visuals and performance. You'll pardon me if I sound a little excited, because, frankly, I'm frickin' psyched.
Just imagine how excited Chou will be on the next next Forza game. His head will pop!

I worked on Forza 2 and I cant tell with absolute certainty that Forza 3 will look amazing. The reason Forza 2 didn't look as polished viusually is because they built a new game engine from the ground up instead of using the original Forza 1 engine. The pressue to release on time and at 60 frames per second is what caused Turn 10 to make comprimises visually. 2 more years of work with the engine will produce some fantastic visuals in Forza 3.

I'd like to see them put in the Tesla. I'll never get to drive one in real life, but I'd love to see how it handles in the game. Calacanis says it's totally awesome. Bring it, Turn 10!

Honestly this is pretty logical. You look at games back on the PS2 or Xbox when they are first released and then you look at games towards the middle or even end of their lifespan and they look far better as well as doing more things. Console developers are amazing at squeezing extra power that they didn't manage the first time around and doing more with it. This generation of consoles are no different.
The Forza 2 i have to say was a great game. The visuals as others have pointed out could have been better and to be honest, i think they were early on in the development but later on they had to sacrifice some of that and the final product didn't really look as good. Still i don't think there was a better racing experience. The physics were great, the online was great and the custom paint jobs/tuning were great. I think its safe to say we can expect something good from Forza 3.

Sounds great. However, the most important improvement for Forza 3 has to be the career mode. Both Forza 1 & 2 had a very boring series of races, that had to be completed before you could progress. They were too easy and very time consuming which lead to boredom.
They could leave the graphics and modelling engine exactly as it was in Forza 2 as far as I care, as long as they make the career mode fun.

Well exactly Forza 2 is pretty ugly...which is something that makes me question what to expect when they "push" the hardware...maybe it will look nearly as good as grid, and not quite as good as GT5!
if codemasters were saying this I'd be excited....although most of what they say seems to come out of a small hole in their bum.

With as great as the driving was in Forza 2, graphically it was unappealing to me because of how...clinical everything was. Other than that, it's a marvelous racing game. Makes me have super high hopes that when the real GT5 comes out it will be taking these things into mind.

I'm really glad to hear they're pushing the hardware, because while Forza 2 really delivered a top-notch experience-- and the fact the engine constantly rechecked the driving physics was aces-- the game wasn't a real looker. To be honest, it didn't look a whole load better than the first game, which was a suberb-looking game on the original XBOX. So Turn 10, just keep going with the progress, and up the visuals, and I'll be extremely pleased.

as long as pushing the 360 to the limits means a controllable camera during replays, then great. Hopefully we can get the drivtar back. Oh, the livery and auction house were great adds to your second game, hopefully you'll keep them the way they are.

So, are they going 1080p or individual blades or 3d rendered grass? ;)
Hope they pull the experience out of the bag - if they can do the weather thing, maybe have an arcade mode and build upon the auction system you have a win.

Oh yes! Cant wait for Forza 3! (if that "really" is their next game). Hopefully they are giving the graphics an overhaul because that was the only thing in need of a polish, driving physics and everything else was perfect.
And please bring back point to point races! Thanks.
Btw.: i think GT5 looks butt-ugly... There, i said it. Saying that it pushes the limits of the PS3 must be a joke... PGR3 and 4 is way beyond it. And now Forza 3 is about to push the envelope.

@Rexter: Perhaps you're referring to GT5 Prologue; because I assume you don't have a copy of GT5 yet, if you do please tell me where you got it.
And I wouldn't say its butt-ugly, that is just way rehearsed and something a fanboy would say. PGR3 and 4 were great games and looked great but compared to the sheer amount of cars that will be available in GT5 (going from experience with past installments); Its great to see how much detail they still put into EACH individual car. GT5P doesn't have the best visuals, but its by no means butt-ugly.

Sounds good. I didn't think Forza 2 looked bad by any means. The frame rate was solid and the cars were nicely detailed, but it did look a little plain in places I thought. So a more visually impressive game is certainly a bonus in my book.
What I would really love is for someone to combine realistic racing physics with some visually interesting tracks, like the track designs in Ridge Racer or OutRun2...

are u people spastic smurfs?
I had goose bumbs playing GT5 prologue, the in cr view was intense, the driving physics are unparralled, sure you can't crash and stuff, but if you're a real racing enthusiast, crashing should be the last thing on your mind?
IM sorry but GT prologue's visuals are far from average, GT trumps forza in so many ways, i've never been amazed by foza, i prefer toca to forza by far i just play forza between Gran Turismo's
Anyways GT5 is the "Real Driving Simulator"
Prologues sales creamed forza's sales anyway

^^^ Then you're not a "sim" enthusiast. GT5:P is a great game, however, the physics, AI, and environmental textures are outclassed by MANY recent racing games.
There's just no REALISTIC argument to the above.
The cars in GT5 though, are second to none in looks. Something Forza 3 needs to meet or exceed.

@Shandy706: But GT5 doesn't (or not to my knowledge) have the ability to make awesomely kick ass designs on your car either. I know in Forza 2, I had a car someone had painted up ala 300 style, with a spartan on either side and it looked AWESOME. Oh sure, there's no super duper high awesome detail down to every little gritty bump on the car, but when you can paint it with a big can of awesome, who cares?

@notoriousEIC:
For me, I'd put 800 laps in an endurance race in Forza2 before I put 5 laps in GRID. The driving in F2 is just too damned good and I wasn't too fond of the GRID demo (drifting is dumb). You could put Virtua Racer graphics in it, and I'd still think it's the bee's knees.

I'm hoping that Che and crew are all part of something big. Forza 2 bought to the table an excellent simulator who some say that out-GT's GT technically. To think that they can take it to the next level visually and technically makes me excited but I'll keep my head from exploding till after I try it.

@zlimness: They are all over the place on this friggin board man. You can't say a positive thing about Cliff B, but God forbid you say something about Kojima.
The real world ratio for 360 owners to PS3 owners is almost 2:1, on Kotaku its almost 1:1. Also I think PS3 owners have a larger chip on their shoulder this generation, so hence they are more vitriolic in their approach to comments. I still have not seen a PS3 owner give Microsoft props for the features they have brought to the table this generation.

dude, i find crashing immature, you completely not understanding the gt concept. Turn off all the driving aids, use a race wheel turn the AI way up and you have one of the most uniquely challenging games of all time. Each car feels truly different, unlike forza where most cars feel the same and cars like the corvette dont handle or drive like their real life counterarts. in gt u get similar race times in compared to real life, and you actually hav to break prperly, unlike forza where you can do a turn at over 100MPH !
