Gears Of War Movie To Be Pro Wrestler-Free
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:30 AM on July 27, 2008
At today's Gears of War panel at Comic-Con, Cliff Bleszinski from Epic Games was asked about the Len Wiseman directed movie based on the IP. Bleszinski, the executive producer on the Hollywood adaptation, says he has high hopes for the film.
"Look, we know that video game movies have been pretty bad", Cliff admitted to the crowd, attempting to assuage their fears that the Gears flick will suck. "But just think how bad comic book movies were for such a long time. We hope [the Gears of War movie] will change that".
He noted that the Hollywood shot-callers are the same age as the average gamer — 35 years old — and have grown up playing and loving video games. "Hollywood gets it... and they dig games", Cliff said.
What may depress aficionados of Gears meaty, steroid overdosed look is that the feature film may not live up to the dream casting of certain fans. In lieu of filling out Delta Squad's armour with accurately voluminous meatheads, he's hoping they'll find some actors who can, you know, act.
"I know people have ideas where they want to see some wrestler, some huge buff guy", Bleszinski "The thing we care most about is charisma, someone you'd want to watch for two hours".
What a novel idea!

I want to know where a good setting for this film will be at. The background for the game was amazing. Will the be able to find places like this. I don't want to be looking at people in front of a green screen the whole time. This movie has to be fantastic, it will help the gears franchise so much. To bad they don't need a lot of help. lol

@jmill87: Actually, Lester "Mighty Rasta" Speight (AKA Terry Tate) is the voice of Cole Train AND, according to IMDb.com, he is rumored to play Augustus "Cole Train" Cole. Now THAT would be an amazing addition to the Gears film.
Hmm... if only the voice of Marcus actually looked like Marcus. hahaha. Then we would be in business.

@Detre:
Unless I missed something Hitman was a fucking mess, of course you may have been watching it with the sound off... and your eyes closed which would make a world of difference. I give you your point though, there are many "alright" game movies but they are subjects close to our hearts, "alright" is, erm, alright, for some unknown summer blockbuster movie but for a cherished game franchise, I think it's still disappointing.
Dark Knight is good because Chris Nolan (and his brother) are hugely talented and they had a great cast too. Watch his other films, original ones like Momento, and then compare that to Underworld and Fast and Furious. You'll get a general gist of the mile wide chasm in directorial and writing quality you'll be getting in GoW.

They don't need guys with tons of charisma, maybe mild charisma. Steve Buscemi and Christopher Walken have great charisma but they wouldn't be best for the role (though they would be a dream team for a buddy picture). They need someone who people believe could caused a lot of havoc and actually have a chance of saving humanity. Wanting to watch someone for two hours isn't what people are going to this movie for, they're going for the action.

If the charecters are portrayed as they act in game, they would be nothing but meat-headed pro wrestlers. Pro wrestlers are nothing more than meat-headed professional actors anyway. To make a Gears' character have charisma in the movie would be to detract from the games' true feel. Just have good special effects and sound and it will net about the same as that new whats-its-name death race movie with that guy that ruins action movies nowadays.

@DemonBlood: Well, there wasn't much of a Plot in Super Mario Brothers Games when the movie came out. I'm just saying you didn't really get a true view into Mario's Psyche or the true motivation behind stepping on those little turtles. Does he fell pain for them? Does he hate them? Are they just in the way? I can't identify with that. =(
I don't get how movies based on games like Max Payne, Hitman, DOA and the like get made, while they have games like Bioshock and Metal Gear to make movies out of; and why it's so hard for a Halo movie to get made.
I'm sure Gears has a intricate back story and all that with Marcus and whatever his dad was doing, but it's not explored in the first game, it's going to be odd if they try to include it a lot in 2, and trying to stick a story on it halfway will turn off a lot of fans who just like killing shit.

I don't know how this movie can rise to the any great level with Len Wiseman directing. His directing has just been "adequate" to me. They need someone better.
And not just to rag on Len, but Chris Morgan isn't really setting the movie world on fire with his writing credits. Save for this summer's Wanted, which was a good action flick.
Maybe, they should've hired Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov to director Gears.
Oh well. We'll see.

Personally i think there have been many good video game movies. Any omg oscar winning god father like video game movies? Hell no. Good movie to waste a 2 hours or so watching? Hell yes. Silent Hill, RE 1-3, Hitman, and MK are all movies that are very watchable. Id go so far as to say in the grand scheme of shitty movies they are far far from that. He hit the nail on the head when he mentioned comic book movies. A movie like say The Dark Knight, to me, was simply amazing. Not only was it a good comic book movie it was a really good movie period. I think video games will have that next level movie eventually (by next level i mean "oscar worthy"), but the stuff thats been churned out thus far really isnt that bad.

Anyway. If Arnie can star in several great action films I don't see how you can complain that the actors are at fault when a film like Doom flops. This is more down to shitty direction and writing.
If I was Epic I'd be more concerned with getting a capable writer and director. Wiseman manage to make a story about a story about vampires, werewolves and a hot chick in leather into a mundane chore to watch. Morgan seems to be nothing more than a screenwriter with a lot to prove.
Let's not forget Oscar winner Ben Kingsley starred in Blood Rayne. No amount of acting talent can polish a turd!

What's with the dis on comic book movies? Comic book movies did not suck for years and then finally become good when Spiderman 2 came out. CliffyB is probably about my age (I'm 29), so he ought to remember the first Superman movie with Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, and the first Tim Burton Batman movie with Jack Nicholson playing what is still the best-ever performance of the Joker.
The long and short of it is, video game movies mostly have crummy actors in them, or directors who are clearly under-utilizing the acting talent they DO have. Find a game with a good villain (alas, General RAMM is not going to cut it), sell it as a fun role to play, and get a good actor to take the part, and you've got a chance to wind up making a great movie.

I hope the film is good, I will admit I don't no much aout the directors, sorry but i don't watch the credits to find out who did what :P lol.
One thing is though Gears does have a lot of story/plot to it, just because the FIRST game of a rumoured trilogy doesn't show a whole stroy in one go doesn't mean there isn't one.
The film could be about Asphalt Feilds (sp?) which is why Marcus was in the slammer to begin with, which would lead us to where we are now in gears one. It could be about almost anything in the Gears universe. I hope this film is good.
Something else to, this whole charisma + wrestler business. If a wrestler has charisma so does a 360 and Ps3. So lets have consoles playing the characters,

This is one instance in which I'd advocate the casting of pro wrestlers! Gears of War --driven solely by action and violence-- has as bare a plot as I've ever seen. A film adaptation doesn't require quality thespians. As others have duly noted, the best pro wrestlers have charisma in abundance, and little else is required to deliver the kind of one-liners we heard in the game. What the movie needs is a good director who can understand how to work with those non-actors' inexperience and edit accordingly.

@rexdart007:
You listed a few outliers in a generally bad era of movies.
Look at the original Hulk movies.
The unreleased F4 movie.
Most of the Superman movies.
Every Batman BESIDES the first. (Until the new series).
Ever see Nick Fury the movie? As much as The Hoff looks like 616 Fury, man, was it bad!
And don't get me started on TV series!
I believe this could be a great movie. Gears has alot more story then people think, it just wasn't shown IN game. If this movie can help bridge between the ignorant fans who love the game for the action, and the Sci-Fi geeks who actually read deeper into the story, I'm all for it.
Besides, if all else fails I'm sure we'll get some Memes out of it. Look at Stay Alive, which was made in part to Dude Huge; Some of my all-time fav's in terms of memes right there.

@PJ Frost: Hmm casting Ryan Reynolds as the inevitable comic relief is not bad. He's certainly buff enough for the part.
@Kanik: I think the first MK movie was good as well. Sure it was cheesy and some of it didn't make sense but I wouldn't categorize it as a train wreck either.
@DemonBlood: I think it's not really with wrestlers not having enough charisma. It's more to do with wrestlers belonging in a niche crowd. They don't want the film to be viewed as something |by wrestlers for wrestling fans". Not saying there's anything wrong with that but the target demographic is a bit more constrained that way.
@Detre: Agreed with the Dark Knight being awesome. =)
@rexdart007: I'd have to disagree on Jack being the definitive Joker. Even if Heath Ledger didn't die, it was still better. From a comic stand-point and he captured the sheer madness the Joker embodies. Sure Most of it surely came from Christopher Nolan but you can't argue Heath rocked it as the Joker.
@Thedavid: I was just going to say that as long is GoW the movie is in the same vein as say Starship Troopers,etc. Then there's a good chance it's going to be watchable.

Hey DUDE HUGE, if you can make a game wherein the necks of your protagonists don't equal or exceed the size of their heads, give storytelling a whirl. Til' then, don't bother, GoW 1 was the worst kind of story, that is a bad one masquerading as a good one. Or rather a bad one that thinks its a good one. It may very well have contained the most ham-fisted, overly-didactic afterschool special writing in the history of man, just being spouted by walking stereotypes with chainsaw rifles, which, by the way, detracts heavily from your "destroyed beauty" theme.
Seriously, if you want to make a Gears of War movie, get Michael Bay to direct, make some brainless action flick starring Vin Diesel and get on with your day job. You'll make a nice buck and look at it this way, you can't lower a bar that's resting on the ground.
The game was good despite its literary failings, but I must say Epic is damn lucky the NAACP didn't come crashing down on them after Cole's dialogue. "LOOK AT ALL DAT JUICE!!!"

LOL at people saying acting and GOW together. How much acting ability does it take to scream into the camera, "LET'S WASTE THESE LOCUST FUCKERS!"
Yeah, uh, no.

@Reibooi: you're delusional. This movie has everything working against it. Just because you liked the game doesnt mean the movie is going to be even watchable.
Doesnt matter how much the people want it to succeed, it means nothing, these are the same people running hollywood that have no original ideas and make these movies that constantly flop at the box office. They go in to each of these films putting all they have into it, with all their passion and produce crap. Hollywood couldnt make a great movie even if they knew how.

I'm sure if they got some average sized but good actors in, they could stick them on the 300 workout, and get them super buff in no time. Uh if they do just don't make them wear loinclothes while trying to chainsaw something.

God of War, Gears of War and Metal Gear Solid have all good potential for a movie.
God of War is the most suitable I think.

I seriously doubt the guy who somehow managed to put his smoking hot wife into skintight leather and make it boring at times is going to blow my socks off with a GoW movie, whether he casts wrestlers or not.
...unless he somehow showhorns said hot wife into more leather for it. Then you can cast Marlon Wayans, Larry the Cable Guy, and Jon Heder in it and you'll still damn me to buying a ticket.

Marcus=Gerard Butler...nuff said
Baird=Ron Perlman
Dom=Batista(if he could act...dont think so)
Cole=the guy who does his voice...LOL
and despite what anyone has to say, when it comes to big-budget ACTION Michael Bay has it down. That is what the movie needs to be...last time someone tried to put a super serious story in this type of genre(1st Hulk) people blasted it(Dark Knight is the exception..although that story was thin in some places).

What would make a gears movie good would be action, not so much acting. I'm thinking, something along the lines of the warzone scene at the end of Children of Men. If they can make a Gears movie that intense, and faithful to the game, then it would be at least a fun movie. Gears shouldn't try to be emotionally poignant. It won't happen.
@Laughtrey: Have you actually played Max Payne? It and its sequel have damn good storylines. Some of the best I've seen in any game. Also, Metal Gear wouldn't work as a movie. It would have to be around 6 hours long, and nobody wants to sit in a movie theater for that long. Plus, it probably wouldn't have David Hayter's voice or the series' trademark quirkiness.

If there is any movie that needs pro-wrestlers its the gears one. I was always turned off by Gear's beefy, man-lovin', hard-ass style but at least learn to embrace what made you famous. Hell if everyone remembers gears because Marcus Fenix looks like he should be lifting weights in the olympics then get some damn beefcakes in there. CliffyB's plot sucks anyways, so i don't see how the movie can be that amazing.

Wiseman knows how to make great action. UW1-2 action looks great with no epileptic style camera.

Yes, a movie about meatwads with tiny heads shooting aliens with chainsaw guns is going to change the way the world looks at video game movies.
Thank you for the insight, Cliff.

Sounds like jealousy speaking for Clifford the little blonde game designer.
Honest-to-God CliffyB quote from a few years ago (circa Unreal Championship 2): "My friend is making an action movie based on me..."
I'm sure there will be no wrestlers starring in that one, either. Stunt doubles need to be closer to the frail, pre-pubescent set. Maybe there's another younger Macaulay Culkin sibling waiting in the wings, old enough to read a script yet waifish enough to fit the bill.
