Get Portal's GLaDOS On Your GPS
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 6:40 AM on July 1, 2008
If you're gettin' around town via GPS but find you just don't have enough maniacal supercomputer guidance? Should you be technologically slightly ahead of the curve and in ownership of a Garmin Nuvi (or possibly StreetPilot) GPS device, you can now receive your driving directions courtesy of the GLaGPS -- Genetic Lifeform and Global Positioning System -- a 'bot that does a near pitch perfect impression of Portal's GLaDOS.
Hit up the official site for download and installation instructions, but obviously not before you check out the compatible hardware guide. And the demonstration video, natch.

If Valve actually made a Glados GPS I would buy it. I don't think I'd be able to help myself. This sounds like a pretender to the throne.

Turn right and you will reach the cake. Turn left and you can go to the GTA rape scene location.

Wow. I chuckled at the Knight Rider TomTom I saw the other day, but this is awesome. Still no car to use it in, just a bike, so it'll have to wait, but it's put the Nuvi line on my map!

You know, all the Portal references are cliche as Hell now, but even I think this kicks ass.

Yeah...
VERY COOL... BUT....
It needs insults or running commentary.
Without it, it's just a pale imitation.

Wow, pretty spot on! I know I'd be laughing if I got in a car and heard that.
Can you make it say "This next route is impossible"? Or maybe throw in a "Are you still there?" like the turrets if it's been too long without a comment?

My God, I must have this NOW! Thankfully they're making this for the TomTom as well. Those are by far the best GPS's out there - very fast processors/response time in those.

It's weird. GLaDOS is awesome, but this GPS mod-- while ambitious-- is horribly annoying. The quality is very low. So kudos, creator dude, but ouch. My ears.

Screw GLaDOS, I want me a SHODAN GPS! (In truth, that would be the most annoying GPS voice ever...
*normal voice* "In two"
*low voice* "twooooo"
*normal voice* "miles, turn left."
*high voice* "urn.. urn.. urn.. left"
*low voice* "eeeffffftttt"

Does anyone with a nuvi know if this is a TTS file? Its cool and all, and i really love Portal, but whats the use in the turn right turn left only directions when the unit comes with various text to speech voices that actually read out the streets, routes, numbers, etc?
It seems like this project is only halfway there....if its not TTS. Given the fact the creator failed to mention which type of voice file it is gives me the inclination is certainly not TTS. In which case, while novel...is pretty inferior to the technology on the device.

@stephenzerotwo: It's a .vpm file, not TTS. It's built for Nuvi's that don't have tts function.
