Ghostbusters: The Video Game Hands-On
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:30 AM on July 27, 2008
One of the most unfortunate cancellations of Comic-Con 08 was the Ghostbusters: The Video Game panel, planned to feature actors Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson as well as reps from Sierra. While we were disheartened to learn of the nixing of that particular panel, we took comfort in the limited, but very awesome, showfloor demo of Ghostbusters: The Video Game. Based on our limited playtime, we're more interested than ever to get our hands on the final version, and not just for the stellar performance from the Ghostbusters booth babes.
The Comic-Con demo takes place in the New York public library, the location featured at the beginning of the first Ghostbusters film. As the four Ghostbusters enter the library — Winston Zeddemore, Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz and you, the new recruit — the cheers of New Yorkers can be heard in the distance.
The 'Busters are tasked with taking out a few unwelcome guests holed up in the library, one being the librarian ghost seen in the first film. The demo introduces the player to the PKE meter, which senses ectoplasmic activity and scans spirits and ectoplasmic residue a la the visor in Metroid Prime.
Used in conjunction with the "paragoggles", you'll be able to hunt down evidence and find traces of ghosts. Hitting the Y button the Xbox 360 controller brought up the EPK meter and switched to first-person paragoggle mode.
After tracing one of the spectres into the basement, we came across one of the game's mini-boss fights. As we entered a huge room in the library and met up with the other three Ghostbusters, a giant book golem, essentially a swirling mass of books with a reading lamp for a head, attacked.
While it wasn't clear what we had to do to defeat the thing after scanning it, Stantz just encourage us to cooperate and saturate the thing with proton pack beams.
Your proton pack has a very film accurate feel to it. It feels wildly out of control (in a good way) and has a few alternate modes of fire. You can do a "slam" move with the left trigger to drain a ghost of its energy, essentially firing a burst of extra proton pack power. The backpack can also overheat when used for long stretches, so you'll have to vent it if you don't want an interrupted proton stream.
After our book golem fight — which took far, far longer than we thought it would — we headed further into the depths of library, the location of the librarian ghost. Walking through the aisles of the library archives, we were attacked by flying books, moving book shelves and a occasionally, a ghost known as the Collector.
We met up with the Collector, who threw dozens of animated books and whatever library furniture was in the room at our character and Ray Stantz. This was our first attempt at using the containment unit, which the player can toss on the floor with the X button. Positioning the ghost by manipulating it with your proton beam is no easy task, even with an AI controlled Stantz helping us out.
At one point, Stantz went down and we had to revive him with the A button, making our final push against the Collector a bit easier. After containing the flying spectre with the beam, then slamming it against the walls and ceilings, we finally got the Collector into the containment unit, ending our demo.
We were pleasantly surprised at how well the game captured the mood of the first film, no doubt helped by the inclusion of voices of Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. None of Bill Murray's dialogue was featured in the demo level, sadly, but what we did hear of the other actors sounded great.
Ghostbusters: The Video Game has attention to detail — and fan service — in spades. The EPK meter model looks spot on and the menu selection screen, the Ghostbusters firehouse HQ, is a nice touch.
The game simply looks fantastic, with beautifully modeled characters and props. Our main complaint — a minor complaint — with the game's visuals were the overly glossy, over bloom-lighted graphics. Otherwise, the game looks brilliant.
One thing we hope is addressed are the cues that direct a player what to do next and how to use their ghost bustin' tools. We actually restarted the demo because we felt like we'd missed some sort of critical direction from the NPCs. Turns out we just hadn't scanned a display case (one that we didn't even see during a few minutes of poking around). We also suspect that our book golem fight took much longer than necessary because we weren't really familiar with the alternate firing modes of the proton pack. Hopefully, this issue can simply be chalked up to the limited available play time.
It may be Ghostbusters nostalgia taking over, but our brief taste of the game did feel like a return to form for the property. The whole experience captured the experience, or what we assume the experience, of being a part of the Ghostbuster team would be like. We're very, very excited to get our hands on the game again.

I'm iffy on this game. The screens and vids on the internet don't look very promising to me. Maybe those were just early builds.
Still, I'm very cautious about this game.

@PapaBear434: Wouldn't that get a little tedious after a while?
I mean, I can see it being fun for a while, but being forced to put off saving the world because people will hate me unless I go and kill "Slimer #762" seems like it would be tedious.
I guess it's possible to put it in there, but I would only want it for a little while, like as an option you could choose to do to earn bonuses during the last few hours or so.

@Arsenicberyllium:
Not really. Bum rush around, get to your clients, and as the city gets more and more infested with ghosts (happened both other movies) you either keep up with the workload, or people start to hate the Ghostbusters, like they did at the beginning of the second movie.
Not to mention, when the full on ghost-hell breaks loose (you know it's going to happen, it happened IN BOTH MOVIES), there would be plenty of ghosts just randomly running around the city, or driving a taxi cab as the case may be.

@PapaBear434: How would a sandbox game work for the Ghostbusters world?
Wouldn't it be kind of stupid?
"Ray! The ghost alarm!"
"On it!"
Driving for twenty minutes, get stuck in traffic. Sit there for a few hours. Get to the target area, with no side missions, because that's not really something plausible in Ghostbusters.
Really, how would it work?

That depends, right now it kind of leans both ways. Quote, "In an interview on a television show, Ghostbusters creator Dan Aykroyd confirmed that the game is essentially Ghostbusters III. The previously mentioned "Ghostbusters In Hell" plotline often associated with a third movie is not being used for the game, although Aykroyd previously announced the possibility of a computer-generated film based on that script. However, Aykroyd also claimed this game will feature elements of that script."

@SolidSnake1118: Because its the Ghostbusters?
@PapaBear434: I'm not too sold on the whole "sandbox" gameplay idea. I know, I know, we all want free roam. But not everything can be GTA. I would rather have a well executed game with unique levels and gameplay than a game that tries way harder to be what it isn't and become something thats half-assed at best. Call me cynical, but many games have tried and failed. To build a totally open world takes many years and experience and if executed poorly, would just feel tacked on (Grr...No More Heroes!).
With that said, if they can pull it off, by all means.But if they're not going to fully commit to the concept, leave it to Rockstar.

I love GB, I love the world its set in. Besides, whats cooler than catching ghosts with advance mousetraps and proton packs?
GB is revered by many because they grew up with it. Perhaps, you too grew up in the warm, welcoming embrace of metal gear?

I saw the demo at two booths: The Ghostbusters: Video Game booth and also the Sony booth. The demo is remarkably complete. The particle effects on the proton pack are spot on with the film's effects. The third-person, Gears of War camera angle seemed smart and intuitive. It pointed where you wanted it to and didn't get caught behind walls or other obstructions. I don't think there's any type of penalty for crossing the streams with the NPC Dan Akroyd. The trap system seems intuitive and fun, behaving exactly how one would think such a fictional system would work
This game looks very, very promising. With this and TR2N, I'm geeking out.

Same as what @NeVeRMoRe666: said. He-Man and the like certainly pulls a few strings. Good thing they're not relying on only it as its selling point. Judging from the mostly positive previews I just read.
@TheIrishNinja: Agreed! Seems like they're staying true to the GB formula. That's a good thing! :D

@homernoy: @PapaBear434:
It's not like I don't love them. I, a reformed Nintendo fanboy, bought a PS2 just for GTAIII. I love playing GTAIV, I love Oblivion. The game that I most desire right now is Fallout 3. Its not like I don't want it. Its the execution of it that concerns me. Sandlot games are far from easy to pull off.

@PapaBear434: Well, while I like them as well, certain companies seem to pull them off better then others, the big one being Rockstar. GTA is great, but I just don't think it could work with this game.
@photoboy: Ugh, the problem with that is that the C64 version also spawned the NES version, which I think came from the very depths of Hell itself, nothing like the C64/NES version should ever, ever be remade.

This game is a day one purchase for sure. I remember showing a gameplay video to my friends and watching their collective jaws hit the floor. It looks so good right now and still 3 months from release!
On a completly random side note, does anyone remember those sticker books where you could buy packs of stickers at the store or join a "sticker club" through the mail and fill up the book with Ghostbuster cartoon stickers? That was the shiznit.

It's not the idea of sandbox that most don't like, it is what can come out of it.
To make a sandbox game, you have to fill it full of things to see and do. It has to work right, yet still be solid enough to feel open despite even it's linear path.
For every good sandbox game we get, say GTA IV, we get a horrible one, for example Spider-Man 3.
Yet if a developers feels it has to go with sandbox, it can easily be just thrown in there to make people happy or make it seem somehow better, say Hulk or No More Heroes.
Would Super Mario Galaxy be better as a Sandbox game? Maybe, but it's doubtful it would have been as good as the solid structure that it had.
I like sandbox games, I do, but not every game should be that type. Games such as this or Gears of War, a lot can be told that would be missed if it had to stretch everything out into a huge sandbox world. Which can easily make a good game, piss poor.

@Fitz Rhapsody: I'm SO glad someone corrected this. I'm just disappointed by my fellow nerds that so many posts passed by before it was mentioned!
It seems no reporter can get this right. I've seen the letters rearranged (as above), PK Emitter, PK-o-meter. I mean, know your stuff people!
I'm too excited for this game. It's better than a third movie would have ever been. I think a third movie would have been ridiculed (as I've heard speculation for a while about the veteran Ghostbusters handing down the busting to a young group of moron teen actors).
Thank God for the medium of video games!

Is the theme song "Ghostbusters" in the game? I can't imagine a Ghostbusters game without the Ghostbusters song.

@madrigal77: That stupid site. No, the game hasn't been canceled, but Activision did drop it, Terminal Reality will probably find another publisher.
