Google Launches Its Own Second Life
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:40 AM on July 9, 2008
Google launched Lively today, a 3D virtual world that can best be described as the search and advertising giant's take on Second Life. Currently, the service is for Windows users only and requires Internet Explorer or Firefox, as well as a Google account, to take part in. We quickly downloaded and fussed about with Lively earlier this afternoon, a process that was rather simple, but did have a minor registration hiccup. It was also painfully slow on my Windows box, which is by no means state of the art.
Lively is already loaded with hundreds of virtual rooms of varying themes, not to mention thousands of furries, one of the stock avatars that one can then further customise. Navigating around the world, which also seems to feature some light game like elements, took some getting used to. The novelty wore of quickly for me, as chatting with strangers on the internet is more frightening than in real life, but we'll have to dig deeper to see what Google has in store.
We'll check back in with it soon.

There are some major differences between Lively and Second Life. The interesting part will come with the integration of other Google Services and Applications.

Looks like a fancy IMVU to me. I'll wait until I know that there's a substantial adult userbase. The teenybopper crowd is what killed every other "virtual world" for me.

I don't care what they do, as long as that make it more into the Metaverse that Second Life failed to be.

I've already heard people call it Second Lively and Not-So-Lively considering, at the moment, all it is is a 3D chat room. I may be biased, but my first impression was, "No scripting? No physics? No MMO World? No sale."
However, dragging furniture onto walls and ceilings then stacking up 3 TVs that play Rick Roll on them was rather amusing.

The word that I would use to describe my feelings for this game: "Eh." The art style is...unique, at least.

What is Google thinking? I bet they're going to find a use of AdSense in this virtual world of theirs. Other than that, Google should never get into gaming. Period.

I'll try this out for a week and then delete it. I need something to wright in my blog. I've been off MMOs for about 9 months now. I used to be really big into SL until guys were being possessive of me and were trying to make me put my second-life over my real-life.

Definitely more IMVU than SL. I was messing with it a bit but ended up giving up because it just didn't seem that interesting.
I'll play with it a little more, but it's pretty far from interesting at the moment. Maybe when it gets a little older.

whatever their goal with this shit is, they just lost me after 10 minutes trying to get in.
it consistently amazes me how many intertron services get launched without the necessary infrastructure. their eyes are always so wide with greed - they wont invest the time or money into a capable enough launch, but they sure as fuck will advertise it to everyone and everywhere and spread the word around, guaranteeing a fuss is made across their audience but noone can actually join in.

I gave this garbage all of 5 minutes. It was EXTREMELY laggy, boring, and hard to manage. And once you finally got everything set up (the way you didn't care to), you basically just sit in a room and say random things via chat bubbles as well as place random objects around the room to give you a customizable feel. If that's what they want to call it.
After 5 minutes, I made the comment, "I think I've had enough. I'm out of here." And like a herd of deer, they all followed in my footsteps, saying amusing things like, "Yeah! He's right! Me too!" and "I have also had enough. What is the point in all of this?" That last question being one that I even asked myself as I stared at my computer screen.
The End.

Good idea, violently horrible execution. I have a 2.8GHz, 1.5GB RAM, XP and a 5 meg connection to the web and this thing brought my system to its knees. I could barely do anything and selecting an avatar is super confusing.
I have a whole new respect for Home after seeing how bad this works.
Again, a good idea but it needs a ton of work to actually perform like most Google tools: fast and easy.

Actually Furries are making all - well lots - of your games! I'm guessing you've played a number of games created by Furries.
The studio I work for has 3 furs in it. Other top studios have a ton too which I know.

Right now, it looks fairly shitty and pointless. Like another Google product released into Beta for absolutely years.
If they integrated this with Google Earth and Sketchup, it might get somewhere. But right now, it's just a misfiring 20% project.

This reminds me of how much I had wished Second Life had been playable.
Clunky controls, and an interface and way of doing things that mostly felt like a god damned application instead of a game ruined that for me :(
I'd love a MMO where all you did was explore, and not have to worry about leveling or fighting or any of that :(
