Gridrunner+++ for XBLA Screens
Posted by Owen Good at 8:00 AM on July 21, 2008
Old-old-old school developer (and hooved animal enthusiast) Jeff Minter put some screenies up on his Live Journal of Gridrunner+++, the Xbox Live Arcade port of Gridrunner ++. It looks like an acid trip. There's a sheep in the upper right of this screen, in case you were wondering. The other two are on the jump.

Jeff should stick to making visualisers. Though if he'd kept the foul mouthed obscenities within Space Giraffe the game would have been at least 2% better.
Oh sorry, I forgot we don't do percentages. Can someone highlight that bit in blue please?

Cant stand these types of shooters, never have, to many colours and special effects just ruin it. These graphics were big in the early 90s when rave was popular but they are shit an annoying now.

That art style is rather appealing.

Colorful, but not sharp. Maybe it's just the pictures though.

@Mr.Waffleton: Yes, god, it was more confusing than going really far in Geometry Wars. It didn't help that the game wasn't that spectacular but it would've made the game ten times better if they toned it down.
And I doubt a lot of people will buy this.

Oh, yeah. It looks GREAT. Just the kind of game for people to not buy and for him to bitch on his blog about.

I hope this is at least playable unlike Space Giraffe. Such a great game marred by a little TOO many "special effects"

@Altersparck: Probably. I bought SG and I'm stuck now on level 33 or something because I can't see what the fuck is going on.
I wont be buying this because it will be the same.

@jigglypoofs:
You're dead inside. Too many special effects? Impossible. That's like complaining about too many fireworks at a firework display. Maybe your eyes ain't up to it, but it doesn't make it wrong.

If you play Minter's Gridrunner++ on your pc, it's a very easy and enjoyable experience. You're just moving the mouse, nothing else. A similar gameplay setup plus these sorts of visuals will do very well on XBLA. PacMan CE is one of my favourite games and that too is all about moving one stick, so I'm looking forward to this.
Reminds me, I must try to complete SG sometime...

...Man, I don't think those are actually screens from GR+++, those are a shader test. He's writing a shader engine, he mocked up some screens to show how they MIGHT look in game. Don't go leaping all over it just yet.

@Murderdolls: Hmmm, great question. I'd actually forgotten all about that game. Here's hoping we hear something soon - in the absence of a new Twisted Metal, Vigilante 8 will sate my carbloodlust.
And, I'm glad to see that Minter didn't allow the moaning and groaning over Space Giraffe deter him from hopping right back onto the XBLA horse. I didn't particularly care for the game myself, but found some of the vitrol spewed by both sides of the argument to be unsavory.

@Fenris Wolf: Gridrunner first came out for the VIC-20 (amongst others). Super Gridrunner on the Atari ST. Gridrunner++ on the PC (amongst others).

I loved Gridrunner++ on PC and PocketPC, so I remain very interested in this XBLA sequel.
Though I must admit, those screens look rather hard to fathom.

That first screen just looks a bit too psychedelic for my tastes. Might be all the yellowish-orange in the top-right that's doing it. Makes the whole thing look really off, IMO. The other two look like they might be more tolerable, so it could just be bad timing in the first case.
Now I'll be the first to admit I'm not familiar with Gridrunner (although the title DOES sound familiar. Maybe I have it in my old stack of C64 disks). However, there are a few issues I'm having with what I'm seeing:
- From the look and a few comments, you seem to be constantly firing, but in numerous directions at once. The thing is, the shots are arcing around, so I'm thinking aim would be strange.
- Some of the shots look like certain firing angles are basically spitting out a series of projectiles that almost form a wall on the way to the target. However, others appear to fire far less often. Color me mildly confused/concerned.
- That score display looks very uncomfortable. And the shading on it makes it seem like we'd get an effect much like SG's psychedelic look for that part, if not the entire game.
- As for coloring: I'm just not digging the whole idea of your shots changing color as they fly outward. Just looking at those pictures, I'm seeing white, red, yellow, orange, green, yellow-green, and purple as the colors of your shots. Thinking that might be a bit too much. And the whole blue halo around the ship looks like it would be really annoying to deal with the entire time.
The graphics are certainly an improvement over Space Giraffe, so that's a plus. That was one of the things that really turned me off from it. It looked too amateurish with the ultra-minimal graphics, and they negatively impacted gameplay for me.
@Intellectualdiot: I'll be willing to at least give this a demo run or two before I start spewing vitriol. But if it hurts any combination of my eyes, ears, or brain, it's on. :P
BTW, I don't think Minter's a furry. Seriously. A zoophile, however... I think the jury's probably still out on that one. But I don't care if the guy gets his jollies from petting Chippendales (the furniture, not the male strippers), if he makes good stuff, I'll play it. If it's not good, I won't.

and btw, they aren't furrys or anything sick and weird like that, they just like having sex with sheep and the like ;)

@JimTheFly: I wouldn't worry analysing what you're seeing that much. The thing is I haven't seen this game officially confirmed yet. I know he's unlikely to have several games on the go but still this could be just a shader test. And to my mind it doesn't have the feel of a finished game.
