Here, Have Some Mega Man 9 Screens
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 6:00 PM on July 9, 2008
Capcom has released a couple new Mega Man 9 (Rockman 9 in Japan) screenies. The game would be out this September and will cost a somewhat charitable 1000 Wii Points (or US$10 in real money). Check out the screens below in all their 8-bit retro glory.

Mega Man really needs to close his mouth when jumping. I can't imagine how many bugs he's eaten through the years.

I've been replaying Megaman 2 recently and this is looking suitably retro. However, it will be interesting to see how committed they are to the old-school concept. Megaman 2 has some annoying levels, like the HeatMan stage with it's instant death falls into lava if you don't know the timing and position of each appearing/disappearing platform. If they've kept this sort of thing in Megaman 9 I could see it putting off a lot of today's gamers.
Hopefully they've replaced the password system with a save, even if it wasn't a common feature in the NES days. I wonder if they'll have an "realistic" sprite flicker?

Need. More. Just release a video of somebody playing through half a level. (with a miniboss that he dies against preferably.) That will allow me to survive this horrible wait.

this game really too old school for the current genreration who is obsessed with big muscles and guns. This was a series that kicked your ass and let you know how much you suck. But afterwords you were a gaming god and carved out of wood. Now we have auto aim, cpu assist,the evil empire (EA), and 10 hour long video games.

Oh Jesus, this can't get here soon enough. All props for Capcom going the ultra retro route with the blue guy. So glad its popping up on XBL as well so I'll get to enjoy it. Here's hoping its accompanied by a re-release of a few others from the series, especially Mega Man 2.

@IronsUK: I don't care too much about "current expectations" but at least use Mega Man 7 or 8's sprites and instruments!
If this was some running gag they'd carried through the entire series, then I could kinda see it but as it is now, it's just sad.
I'm really depressed that they're numbering it in the series.

@rentahero1: Oh, whatever. You're going to play the bejesus out of this game. You have to remember that by Keiji Inafune's hands this game is 8-bit, and has the "let's go back to when these games really kicked ass" flavor mixed in there. So go be depressed another time because this game will do nothing but infuriate you!

The graphics-whiners still have not given a compelling reason as to why Inafune's team should use more up-to-date sprite work outside of "I don't want it to look old".

Um yeah what i'm trying to say is that people thinking a Megaman 9 should continue on from Megaman 8 are asking for filth, whereas this game is an obvious homage to the games that set the foundation for the series. That is all.

So many people seem to have forgotten that Megaman sort of stopped being particularly good somewhere around Megaman IV. I totally respect what the X series did, but as for the actual numbered Megaman games? There wasn't a single one after IV i felt had any heart to it.

@Sunjammer: I'll kinda agree with you there. I played the hell out of 1-4 and while I think Mega Man X is the most enjoyable of the series, none of the subsequent ones have really drawn me in.

@megaStryke:
Simple, it's just plain lazy. I mean sure it only costs $10 but considering that they're just reusing huge art assets from the old games it seems a bit cheap. Especially when you consider that:
A) You can get Lost Winds for the same amount of points
B) Megaman 7 and 8 both used updated spritework so why not just base it off one of those.
And anyway 8-bit is just fugly anyway, sprites didn't start looking good until 16-bit.

@Odin:
Megaman 7 and 8 were both considerably easier than the original NES games. They're giving us an old school hard as nails platformer, so why not have it look the part? I pay for gameplay, not graphics.

StratfordX
Posted 3:47 AM 10/7/08
@Odin: A) so fucking what? I don't pay for the hours or what software they use to get their art, I'm paying for the fnal project.
B) megaman 7 and 8 came out a decade ago, before the 8bit revolution.
without a sense of history, 16 bit graphics are sort of meaningless. You have yet to drop a compelling reason.
StratfordX
Odin
Posted 4:34 AM 10/7/08
@StratfordX:
What 8-bit revolution? The restrictions the hardware at the time placed on sprites in game meant they were often simple and incredibly bland, especially in terms of colours. Megaman was composed of 3 flat colours, 5 if you count black and white.
Honestly YOU have yet to produce a compelling reason why it's a good thing they're going back to a restrictive and limited style.

@Odin: 8-bit fugly????? TAKE IT BACK SIR! I agree that there is a TON of charm in the 16-bit sprites (I mean Kefka was menacing as the nine hells, and Chrono Trigger was emotionally resonant), but look at what can be done with a simple palette and 'fugly' 8-bit sprites. Games like Mario 3, River City Ransom, Contra!!! A lot of them could be Murder-Hard, and didn't hurt the eyes. You can't tell me that all of those brilliant GameBoy games were ugly just because of the limitations on color/resolution? A lot of them were better designed than the Gamegear's because Sega thought, "We have color and better graphics, so it must be better in every way."
Also look at the amazing quality of design in a game like Cave Story. He didn't have to set those limitations, but because he did we have a game made of pure creativity.
