id Leave Activision For EA
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:00 AM on July 15, 2008
For the longest time, Activision have published id's games. But no longer! John Carmack took to the stage during EA's E3 address to announce a new partnership between the two companies, whereby EA will be publishing Rage, id's upcoming shooter and first game to make use of their new engine tech. We'd normally insert some kind of statement about this adversely affecting Activision, but really, these days they're probably good for the money.

I don't hold anything against companies for thier size, the main reason I don't like EA is that I find that a lot of thier games have been pushed out the door before being fully ready, in addition I think they push thier programmers to hard.

This is just more of the same from EA, run out of stuff in house they just go out and buy out or as they are calling it today "partnership" with good developers. I think for the most part their E3 was lackluster because so much of it is stuff everyone already knows about.
Really the only thing that I am worried about this partnership is EA's bad reputation for support for the games they published. It is bad enough to release games with a lot of bugs but time after time I have seen EA games with patches taking forever or just don't come out, and rampant problems with really nothing being done about it. In BF2 stats were down for months before they did anything, and I think there is a petition for EA to patch TF2 for the PS3(EA published the Orange Box for the PS3).
Especially since what happened to Flagship a few days ago, which EA was their publisher and pretty much ditched HGL after it was released. Even though HGL was not a great game and most of the blame for that is with flagship. I am surprised that days after that a lot of people seem to think EA won't do the same thing to someone else.

Boring... Wake me up when doom 4 is a ps3 exclusive and then gets announced as having a simultaneous world wide release with the 360.

Let's hope that the Rage Engine doesn't have the same aesthetic familiarities of the Unreal Engine 3 or Rock Band and Madden are going to start looking a whole lot alike...

Um, I think people are reading this wrong. id hasn't been swallowed in the slightest. All that's changed is that EA will publish their games from now on, until the contract runs out.

Seems to suggest it's a partnership, not a merger or buyout. It's not a matter of being "EAten" as much as it is... well, having a new publishing partner.

Glad to see a new game from id rather than another Doom or Quake. Not that there is anything wrong with those franchises, but its always good to see some original stuff.

@ZetaCrossfire: They should definately make their own console and i haver reason to believe they might.
1: EA and TAKE-TWO are going to be partnered together. locking up all significant sports franchises and GTA.
2: Bioware, ID software, 2k games are all going apart of EA or are going to be.
3: with enough mergers they will eclipse the worth of Blizzard Activision.
