inFamous Trailer Will Shock You
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:00 PM on July 18, 2008
inFamous (no, spell checker, it's not my fault), for the PS3, looks to be Crackdown tied together with better graphics and a healthy dose of Deus Ex Machina. And while the game's tone and colour palette could probably do with a little lightening up, the nuts and bolts - you know, the parts where you electrify a car before throwing it off a train track at somebody - seem to be doing a good job of getting folks excited.

@H3lloWorld:
You make Crackdown sound as if it's an abomination released upon the world when really, it's not, and with all that it has inspired, I, for one, am glad it exists. Not that this game is bad at all, of course; it looks really awesome and can't wait to play it.

I was telling a friend today that inFamous sounded oddly like Crackdown, which I hated on account of the direction they decided to take the graphics. I hope they have a good story line, that put the nail in Crackdown's coffin, for me. Here's hoping inFamous rights Crackdown's wrongs.

@Boboh: I'm pretty sure you mean the opposite of that.
Anyways, this game looks absolutely fantastic. Which makes me believe ever so more that the guys working for Sony could be pretty even to the guys in Nintendo.

@Dante18:
ditto, i like sandbox gameplay, i just dont like gta's story, if i want something mob related i'll watch good fellas or donnie brosco, not waste 60 hours in a game.
however throw near jedi/superhero type powers into that gta formula and suddenly i become much more interested. I guess what it comes down to is i actually am interested to know where the powers came from ect ect, i could care less why some dbag is a criminal in NY.
that's how i see it anyways, if i had a 360 i would have probably played crackdown by now lol.

@L-Wolf:
That's a pretty astute observation. The game is definitely about that balance between good and evil, and you can play him as a hero or a villain or somewhere in between, from everything I've heard. Depending on how you act, the city treats you differently.
I can't wait for this one, personally. Game of E3 2008.

is it called inFamous because the way you play the game changes how people in the city view you? so if you play the good guy you become Famous, but if you play the bad guy, you become infamous? which might by why it's lower case i and capital F? dunno...

Posted 6:57 PM 18/7/08
The game looks decent - Crackdown with Star Wars "force" powers, a bit like a free-roaming Psi Ops.
However, those cheap cartoony cutscenes are definitely reminding me of the Sly Racoon games. It fitted those games better, I think.

@Drake Lake: L'Heure Exquise: To tell the truth, I bought Crackdown to get in the Halo beta. I tried several times to play and even convinced myself to do it for the achievements, but no story line + laggy (sp?)online co-op, spelled doom for Crackdown. With that being said, by no means am I insisting that the game should have never been made. It, in its own way, helped to evolve sandbox games. Just not my cup of tea, but my aforementioned friend loved Crackdown and played the hell out of it. Games, like art, are subjective.

Ok, so I have a game that I actually want to play on a PS3 now. YAY! Now I know when I need to look forward to getting one.
Sorry, not a huge MGS fan. I thought about it, but knowing me, I'd go "Dook Stealth!" and begin playing it like Old Snake's Big Action Movie (now w/ hour long cutscenes). But anyways, sandbox action + superheroes. Nice. :)

@Salen: I don't blame you on the MGS front. I enjoyed the first one, but the new one is way too damn verbose. It goes on and on and then changes the facts that you had to learn about in a 40 minute cutscene just an hour ago... I'd like a connected story experience thanks.
At least I was able to get credit at Goozex for $50 of it, so I didn't get shanked in the alley by Gamestop (read: I didn't let them rob me blind on a bum trade in deal)

Looks pretty cool. I agree graphics-wise it looks way better than Crackdown, but that's at least in part because I hated that quasi-cel-shaded, everything-highlighted-with-a-blue-ring look in Crackdown.

Who hated Crackdown? I can't fathom that someone would hate Crackdown and really be looking forward to inFamous. They appear highly similar. It did have a story: get rid of crime in an overrun city. Did you need character development with that? The graphics were beautiful, but I guess I could understand if you don't like the comic book look. Did you not try your damndest to get those agility orbs at the very top of the highest buildings? It's a fantastic platformer.

@ahmeng: I'm actually glad about some of these delays, give me time to scrap up some cash and time to play some of these games. I just hope they don't release too many good games at the same time. It's hard to pay for college and games at the same time.

@Sentientv2: Yeah, well, I beat MGS1 and played through it some a second time, but Sniper Wolf's deathbed speech makes any of the speeches from Assassin's Creed look really short. Seriously, that chick annoyed the dook out of me.
To be truthful, the only reason I was even thinking of getting the MGS4 PS3 combo was because of the Backwards Capability. Too bad the 'new' 80gig won't have it. *sigh* So yeah, maybe if I wait, it'll show back up. Maybe.
@Mangopositive: I personally loved Crackdown. It was cracktastic amounts of fun. inFamous looks like it'll have that same sort of vibe going on with it, sans the "Kills for Skills, Agent!" announcer telling me stuff.

Infamous (logotype spelling be damned) is actually the first PS3 title I'm genuinely interested in. (It's actually the second if you count LittleBigWorld, but I'm not exactly poised to spend $400 to play just that.)
The sad reality is that it's not likely to be much of a console mover. The timing looks like it's going to be rather close to Prototype, which someone gestured to in the comments above is a little bit similar.

everything is derivative of and influenced by, some other thing. why do we constantly have to point it out, pro or con? is it too much to ask to appreciate one particular thing based on it's own merits and efforts to enter the market? must we incessantly deride it based on perceived similarities to other things already out in the wild?
also, to actually read Kotaku AND be terribly misinformed about ANY consoles' price, features, perceived advantages or disadvantages, target audience or place in the market, seems terribly counter-productive to the idea of adding to the usual meaningful, topical discourse. that's just my take.
anyway, inFamous looks like a good time. i'll enjoy following the game and based on where it goes, perhaps, picking it up upon release.
