Infinity Ward And Its 'Unique New IP'
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:20 PM on July 7, 2008
You know Infinity Ward for their work on Call of Duty, you love Infinity Ward for their work on Call of Duty. But nobody, not even Infinity Ward, can make Call of Duty games forever. It'd get boring. So it's nice to hear that, fresh off a re-up of its publishing deal with Activision, Infinity Ward has quietly announced that it's not only started on its "future project" (future? Like, sci-fi future?), but that it will also give the company the chance to build a "unique new IP by Infinity Ward, that we'll have complete control over". Exciting! For Infinity Ward, that is. Sure the words "complete control" don't look quite so good to the "port it to everything!" crowd at Activision HQ.

I had never even HEARD of Infinity Ward, and then I tried something out called the Call of Duty 4 Beta on the 360. Now I've got to say that they are one of my top 3 game designers as I still play this game every single day for at least an hour and love every minute of it. My wife on the other hand.....not so much :)

Sweet.
I bet it'll have Captain Price in it anyway.

Ok, i've been wondering for the past few weeks what IP stands for exactly. Is it "impending project?"

@CHU BOI: Forget Stopping Power. I demand Double Tap on my pulse rifle and smartgun.
Ok, so does this mean I have one more reason not to think about any CoDs above 4 right now?

It better have the Stopping Power perk in there somewhere.

@saladinzero: I've heard rumors that COD4 was, in early development stages, indeed intended to be a fresh IP. Then Activision forced them to simply (and sloppily) slap the Call of Duty brand onto the game anyway.

@kylo4: versions? as far as I know, only one treyarch COD sucked.

I eventually expect Infinity Ward to expand to become a publisher in it's own right in the future.I'd love to see Infinity Ward do a good shooter within the Terminator franchise.

COD4: Modern Warfare felt like a fresh IP, and that was great. Just imagine what they might do with an ENTIRELY fresh slate :)

don't read different platforms, read we'll be the only ones making games with this IP

I'm happy to read this, as the Treyarch versions of Call of Duty water down a series that is great from the Infinity Ward versions. Now that they'll have all the rights to their new IP, we'll get good quality games all made by them instead of switching back and forth.

It is interesting, Infinity Ward has truly risen from the ashes of 2015, Inc. In fact, 2015 seems to now be just a husk...
I bet EA wishes they could have held onto them.

Maybe they will get some reliable servers and bandwidth this time around and anticipate "load" BEFORE they release maps and updates?

@FightingChance I agree, that has got to be one of the dumbest mistakes in video game history. Not only do you lose a group because you wouldn't allow the changes they wanted to make to your IP. But they make a much better game of their own with those things and kill your IP off. And I'm not sure if EA still has learned from that lesson, a lot of their games are still the same "cookie cutter" type of stuff that made Infinity Ward leave.

@AndrewG009:
Treyarch is using the COD4 engine on the new Call of Duty game and also on Quantum of Solace(which apparently is looking very good)
I agree with you about COD3.I played it,beat it,but it was a average experience.I'm really done with the WW2 era.

Infinity Ward with COD2 and COD4 have proven there is a lot of talent behind both games, and I'm not bashing Treyarch or COD3, but it did seem like a watered down gaming experience at some points leaving me very disappointed. I don't want a mini-game like experience in my d-day invasion.

What's full control when you are not in full control of your own company?
Imo, IW games are good, but not great, or revolutionary, and I guess they won't have an easy time with a new IP as they had with CoD4, unless this new IP will be just another CoD game under a different label.
Looking forward to hear more about it though

I know it's a popular thing to do, bashing Treyarch and all, but the core Treyarch CoD team also created the PC expansion United Offensive for the original CoD. Remember, this was the first time we were able to do things like cook grenades and sprint...things IW deemed "not worthy" to be in CoD2.

@enewtabie: The only problem with I have of Treyarch using the CoD4 engine is it's like giving a bunch of monkeys typewriters, because if someone has made a novel while typing it on a typewriter, then that means lightning will strike twice and the monkeys will type up the next Harry Potter series.
Ok, so maybe Treyarch isn't a house full of chimps, but I got this feeling that just because they have a good framework to use doesn't mean that the storytelling or gameplay are going to be all that compelling.
And I still have 2-to-1 odds that Mister QTE shows up in CoD5... errr... CoD:World at Warcraft. Or whatever they're calling it.

Anyone else get pissed off by the phrase "new IP"?
It's like they have to create a new term for when they develop a videogame that's not hopelessly derived from an existing brand name or license.

@Sofox:
It's not really a new term. It's been is common use in the industry for years. IP is an acronym for Intellectual Property, what's there to get angry about?
@enewtabie:
Name one western developer who self publishes console games. Why would you think IW would eventually do what's considered nearly impossible by the majority of the industry?
I'm glad to see their renewed publishing deal with Activision is allowing them to pursue new projects. CoD can't last forever, and I'd much rather it be on Treyarch to run the series into the ground than Infinity Ward. I just hope this is something other than an FPS, just because I'd like to see the studio branch out some.

I challenge the idea that noone could make CoD games forever. Give John Romero a crack team of game developers pulled from Ion Storm and 3D Realms, and they'll be able to do that very thing. Granted, they'll be developing the _same_ CoD game forever, but...

@Sainted:
Nah, that'll just mean that they have to spend twice as much infinity* developing it, since the first infinity will be spent trying to bring in more investers.
*yes, it's a legitimate mathematical concept, as dumb as it sounds.
