Interview: The Winning G.I.R.L.
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 9:20 AM on July 23, 2008
Julia Brasil was recently chosen as the winner of Sony Online Entertainment's first Gamers In Real Life (G.I.R.L.) design scholarship contest. Nearly 100 applicants submitted game concepts and essays, and Julia's Everquest II level and essay submission won her a $US 10,000 scholarship to The Art Institute of California, and a paid internship at Sony Online Entertainment.
We got a chance to chat with the 20 year-old Brasil (who's never won a contest in her life) about her winning concept, what she thinks of a "G.I.R.L" contest, and what she'll be working on with SOE — full interview after the jump.
Brasil first learned of the contest during a late-night event at GDC, where she worked as a volunteer staffer. The event featured lots of women with jobs in the game industry, who recommended she enter. Getting a $US 10,000 scholarship and a guaranteed in with a publisher like SOE might be any gamer's dream. So how did Brasil feel when she found out she won? "At first, I passed through shock, and then I was in denial. And then, I was really happy, and now I'm just okay with it, I guess!"
When asked to guess why her EQ2 level won out, she guessed it was because she made it "a little bit crazy". The judges, she said, told her they found her work funny and original.
"It involved finding a particular sheep among a lot of other sheep", she said. "It was a little bit adventure game and a little bit of the usual MMO grinding and things".
Female development professionals are under-represented in game industry demographics, so it's fair to consider that a girl-focused contest might be necessary to promote more interest from women in the game industry. But at the same time, there are plenty of male students who'd love to be internship contenders as well — we asked Brasil how she felt about this.
"The thing about the contest is, it's called G.I.R.L, but there was nothing saying guys couldn't apply", Brasil said. "It was geared toward any group that is a minority in game development. I guess the girl thing led people astray to think that, because you are a guy, you couldn't possibly win".
So what are her career dreams? "I want to work in the game industry, like anyone in my class", she said, referring to the game art and development program she attends, where she learns a some art and design, and some coding, too. "But what I want to do specifically once I get in the industry, I'm still not sure about! I still like drawing, and doing concept art and being an artist, but I also like doing level design and scripting".
Brasil hopes her time with SOE will help her experiment with a variety of different industry facets to see what she takes to. Specifically, she'll be interning with the team that's developing The Agency — "I'm looking forward to that", she said.

Wow, no one has said 'I'd hit it' or 'I want to tap that' yet?
Shame on you my fellow Kotaku sexists!

It's sad that so much attention gets paid to looks on game devs- when there are very competent lead programmers/designers who get no attention
Cari Begle deserves attention (Stardock, lead programmer on Gal civ2)

They are under-represented because so few dare enter the industry
If you are a young woman and are competent in game design, companies will snatch you up; female perspective is the bees-knees right now

congrats to her! What a fantastic contest for Sony to put on. I hope they put another on in the future. It helps us girl programmers ( and gamers) get a foot in the door of a very male dominated industry.

Yeah, if only Raymond would do a photo shoot at Maxim, so we can finally take her seriously... :P

Anyone think it would have been funnier if the title was: "Hands On with the Winning G.I.R.L"?
I do.

Good, SOE may have scrapped the idea of capitilizing on this event by selling G.I.R.L. goodies. I was definitely not happy about announcing the goods within hours of picking the winner.

Thank you, Sony, for shattering the myth that there are no girl games. We can now see, thanks to you, that there are, in fact, A LOT of girl gamers- nearly 100 of them! That's almost enough to fill two coach buses!

I wish the very best for the GIRL, and I'm sure she has to be talented.
My only issue however is, SOE. They're infamous for destroying mmo's. If they try to teach her they're only going to corrupt her beautiful mind telling her how not to be successful. Remember SWG? Matrix online? Planetside? I rest my case.

So she plays a game and writes and essay, and now she's all set for collge financially, and gets a career-advancing internship?
Damn, she's lucky. The only thing I get from playing games is debt and wasted time. And none of my papers have won me anything other than a passing grade
>:(
Kudos to her! And yeah, post the essay!

I wish I won something like this when I was younger, then maybe my life would have more direction...maybe I wouldn't spend my Saturday nights drinking whiskey, passing out, then waking up at 4AM, looking in the mirror, crying, then playing the Coldplay song "Violet Hill" over and over on my computer.
Er....congrats to her, and yay for girls in the industry!

Girls in the video game business are lucky. Any engineering field actually. Since they're so rare, universities give out good scholarships to them.

I'm also a girl, in the industry, and went to Art Institute. I dropped out as soon as I acquired a 3D Artist position on a very popular mmo. I wish she would've chosen a school that would've actually catered to her needs :( Art Institute will take anyones money to put them through a program and give them a diploma..even when they're terrible.

@Saiainoshi: I agree with you on A.I. Cause if you have the skrill but no skill, they'll take you in. Hopefully things have gotten better, cause in the end, students get the short end of the stick.
Regardless, congrats on her winning and best of luck:)

Damn, I wish I'd live (live in Portugal) in a country where such oportunities existed. One of my biggest dreams is to work in a videogame team. Being the biggest being the lead producer of a game. I have lot's of ideads, some of them I even right up, but I know it'll be really hard to accomplish that dream, since it's a very difficult one, and my country doesn't help. :/
I just hope, once I finish university (Course: Computer Engineer), I can enter in some of those gaming schools and do what I really love.
Kudos for that girl :)
(And I would also like to see the essay :P)
