Is Chrono Trigger DS Coming To America?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 6:00 PM on July 2, 2008
Previously we've seen the Japanese countdown page, and Kotaku reader Frog did some digging and found what looks like the North American version of that supposed Chrono Trigger DS page with the URL http://na.square-enix.com/ctds/. ("na" apparently referring to "North America".) Meaning? Meaning that if that "ctds" clock is indeed counting down to Chrono Trigger DS for North American peoples, too. That's not good news, that's damn good news.
Do keep in mind Square Enix has yet to officially announce the game or put out a press releaase about Chrono Trigger DS. But still.

@Aerundel:
Well, the Dragon Quest DS remakes haven't been fully 3D... Just the maps are. The characters are still sprites (not saying it's a bad thing... It's kind of a nice mix, actually).
But, this is a Square game, not an Enix game... so expect to follow the Final Fantasy DS route instead.
And if what 108 said here is factual, then it will contain the anime cutscenes from the PlayStation versions, and some new events not in previous releases.
But no word on if it'll be 2D, 3D, or a 2D/3D hybrid.
After seeing the rise and fall of Chrono Ressurection, I wouldn't mind seeing this in fulll 3D. :)

Honestly I really just want a port. CT is a complex and beautiful game, and would really look gorgeous in its original state on the DS. A lot of the environments had vertical scrolls, and spell affects could stretch into the top screen.
CT is leaps and bounds beyond Final Fantasy IV in terms of graphics, and it doesn't need a 3D remake to hold up the way FF4 did. Just toss in some additional dungeons and challenges, keep all the endings, and let us have New Game+ and I'll be completely happy.

@GoGoGodzilla: Well...so far Squeenix's 16-bit RPG remakes have been...straight up SNES ports on the GBA and 3D remakes on the DS. So considering this is a DS game, I can only assume it'll be a 3D remake, as ridiculously way-too-awesome-to-be-true as that sounds.

Heh, I just started replaying it on the SNES the other day! I just hope CTDS is a bit more player friendly than FFIII, which took being faithful to the original gameplay way too far, especially for a handheld game where being able to save anywhere or very frequently should be a mandatory feature.
Hopefully they're giving this the full 3D makeover as it's always fun to see old games with a new lick of paint. But looking at the old SNES graphics, it still holds up very well.

It is comming indeed. Now I understand why Squenix don't want to put it on Wii VC for 8 buck/€uros, then can released it on the DS and make tons more money.
This is great news for us over ehre in Europe, we never had the game officialy released in the SNES. What next, Seiken Desentsu 3 translated*?
Still, I wanna see all those games on VC! SNES is the greates console of all times, even after it's long demise, still generates profit!
*Why not, they translated Front Mission and even made it better with extras on the DS.

@BPMμ: 2.5D or 3D, the point is that none of the DS remakes look like their 2D NES or SNES counterparts, whereas the GBA remakes did. Also, while DQ4 DS looks like DQ4 for the PS1, Chrono Trigger's remake was a straight port with FMV, like the Final Fantasies on PS1. So it lends even more credibility to a DS version being 3D.
And I don't see why some of you guys are abhorring the recent remakes when considering Chrono Trigger. That game had some pretty big heads already, AND spiky hair to boot. I think it'd look pretty nice using the FF3/4 DS engine. However, the fighting systems were pretty different. Characters actually HIT the targets, and combo attacks were made to that end. Monsters also moved around on the field a bit...just generally more dynamic combat. Therefore, I don't think they'd use the same engine, and we might see something could still surprise us.

@Odin: CT's plot wasn't anything special. Fewer twists than, say, FFIV and less action than FFVI. Pretty standard Dungeon romping with a heaping helping of macguffins. What made it unique was its treatment of time travel.
@Bluetribal: I disagree. The reason Chrono Trigger has such a following and rabid fanbase is precisely because it wasn't sequeled to death. It is a beautiful game with clever mechanics and fun characters, but it's not that different than, say, FFVI. CT was special because it was a one-shot game that stood on its own, needed no sequel and was never going to get one. The closest analogy I can draw is To Kill a Mockingbird, which is so cherished partially because Harper Lee, aside from a few works in McCall's, never wrote anything else.

We obviously never touched a series called Phantasy Star or Shining Force, or even Dragon Quest/Warrior series. Those all had plots, even back in the 8-bit days. It took Square a bit of time to catch up with it, that's all. Chrono Trigger though is a game that deserves a remake, but not a complete graphical overhaul. There is more to the story they need to add, such as Janus/Magus's story and such.

@dukerayburn: It's not like they couldn't afford it. They would make fans a lot happier if they you know, actually put some effort into these remakes rather than make terrible "3D" DS remakes.

dukerayburn
Posted 12:57 AM 3/7/08
@Dalren: Those games still live in the money in some very rich man's bank account. A full remake for the current gen of consoles is very resource intensive and expensive. The portables represent a happy medium between straight port and next-gen costs.
I think a big point to be made is that this art still holds up. CT's sprites are big, well-animated, and compellingly designed. They don't need to be made into 3D because they aren't squat little 12-pixel monstrosities. And if the scan on GoNintendo (and elsewhere) is to be believed it does look to be a port. Huzzah!

I'd say, considering how many times people have asked Square about remaking CT, this is just a remake. Which I don't see as a bad thing, because I absolutely love Chrono Trigger. And honestly, I'd be surprised if it was still in 2-D. Not only has Square been remaking the Final Fantasys in 3-D, but they know that there's fan interest in a 3-D Chrono Trigger (ala Chrono Trigger Resurrection).
