I'm not a troll and I'm not asking you to love the DS, but if someone is really pissed off because is not a sequel or a fully brown/gray HD rendered game for the PS3 or Xbox or a game for the PSP you need to lay the fanboy inside a little bit. Nintendo has been shuned for too many years and the other consoles have had all the love. I don't care whose fault was this but Nintendo needs love and this is all they need to keep going.

I've been waiting for anything Chrono related and Square made my day. I love you. If you don't like it post it but don't hate because its only in a Nintendo console, at least try to be more constructive and if not shut up, I don't care about your expression rights when all you have to say is comes down to "SHIT SUX".

Still there is a significant market for Chrono Trigger remake and I for one am excited about the idea.

Really? The carts are quite a bit larger than the SNES ones were, and they seemed to hold the game just fine.

Unless its not a remake, but even then it should work just fine, just won't have a bunch of unnecessary fmv cutscenes cluttering up the beauty that is Chrono Trigger.

Why DS? I like the system, but it isn't great for RPGs. The cartridge size is too small for something as epic as Chrono Trigger. Chrono Trigger deserves much more. Also, if they let Nomura fuck this game up with his belts and zippers and shitty character designs, I won't buy it. His "art" renders any game unplayable for me. That's how much I hate it. If they keep it 2D, then it'll probably be good, but I'd rather have a proper sequel on a console, or the PSP. Chrono Cross was too Final Fantasyish to count as a sequel. Although, I never finished it, so I guess I shouldn't talk about it.

yeah, upon investigating for five seconds and asking two Big Japanese Videogame Industry Contacts, I have come to the conclusion that:

Yes, this is a Nintendo DS remake of Chrono Trigger, with "extra events" and the hand-drawn animated endings from the PSOne re-release included. It will have "minimal to no stylus support". It is very real. And coming at the end of this year. (In Japan.)

Nothing more or less complicated than that.

At any rate, . . . yay?

As a person who believes Chrono Trigger is the yet-unequaled masterpiece of the Japanese RPG genre (read my review here!), I guess it's kind of sad to say that I might not buy this one, even though I did buy the Dragon Quest IV remake, and I will buy the Dragon Quest V remake (which is next week, I think). Even though I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy IV, I somehow managed to avoid buying the luxurious DS remake of it.

Us immortals are fickle, sometimes.

Aiee, FF4 for the DS and now this. I hate portable gaming because it's like they put all the really great games and concepts on those systems and it KILLS my eyes. Those games are what games used to be before they got all bloated with voice acting and cutscenes, when they were pure unadulterated fun, and now they're relegated to a smaller screen. As much as I love the engrossing games on the portables, a port or something like it on a console is much desired. Castlevania, I'm looking at you!

For those complaining about the Dragon Quest 4 remake, bear in mind that was originally a PlayStation 1 title. And despite being the DS' rough equivalent, 3D game design has come a long way in 10 years...just look at Final Fantasy 4 DS or Crystal Cronicles: Ring of Fates. By the standards of the 32-/64-bit era, both of those games are gorgeous.

Square has been the only company consistently pushing the technological limits of the DS, and I'm confident that Chrono Trigger DS will likely up that bar provided its a 3D remake.

Either way I hope they see fit to include the cartoon from the PSX re-release.

@iamspoo: Cross was woefully under-appreciated. It was far too easy, but still a great game nonetheless. I'd give anything to get another sequel of it's caliber than another goddamned remake.

That said, Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games of all-time. It's an undeniable masterpiece and easily one of my top ten favorite games of all-time. You can't overstate how much I adore Chrono Trigger. However, Square has officially broken me on the forced nostalgia. If it's nothing new, and I doubt it will be, I just don't care.

A 3D remake running on the FF DS engine would be nice since it would be something new but I think we're gonna get a GBA FF Advace style update with a bonus dungeon,FMV,etc.

The DS is quickly the platform of choice for RPGs which is kind of amazing in its own.

Chrono Trigger is easily my favorite old school RPG, in my opinion it beats the hell out of any FF ( IV and VI included).

Hell.. I'm not even sure if I ever finished it. If I did, I certainly didn't get the real ending , or whichever the hell was the coolest one.

*sigh* seems like that mint copy of Chrono Cross I got off ebay a few months ago is gonna stay on the shelf a *LITTLE* bit longer :D

@Mikazukinoyaiba: Chrono Trigger was part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles release (along with Final Fantasy 4 (2...sort of). It had some additional stuff and animation for some of the key events. I still have it myself (a little loadtime never killed anyone ^_^).

anyway, this is awesome, though I look for it around August of next year where I am, as Square isn't down with timely American releases, or really timely releases at all.

It will be nice having a version of the game without horrible load times at the start of battles. Regrettably, I only have access to the Play Station version.

I see where you are going about how that argument can always be used for remakes, but wasn't their an article just today (or yesterday) about how gaming culture doesn't preserve it's titles? Unlike books which can be found in the library or sometimes are given re-releases, games aren't so much.

Without emulators most people either have to have been into gaming back then or purchase an older system along with their titles.

I only criticize when a publisher releases a remake every 4 years (like with Ocarina of Time) but something like this (over ten years later) I'd gladly welcome. A new generation actually exists by then, in the future I woudl prefer if all consoles had something like the Virtual Console though.

That was how I managed to play Super Metroid (and loved it).

This is truly one of the best days for gaming ever. I just picked up the SNES version but now I may wait to play it on my DS as I'm much more of a portable game player lately. If it really is a remake/sequel then I will be playing both. Man this is exciting ^_^

There's no way that CTDS could mean anything else. Along with that magazine scan, the clock ticking...consider it confirmed. For the Japanese market anyway. SE would be insane not to bring it here though =P

That being said I do hope they nix the art style they've been using the the DS Final Fantasy styles. I don't take any major issue with that style, I just don't really see it doing justice the Toriyama art style, and while I'm far from being his biggest fan I will admit that his art lends a lot of personality to Chrono Trigger and DQ games.

@Placentasaurus: I'd hope they would be able to get Nobuteru Yūki to help out with the characters if need be, while keeping the original style. I love what he did with Chrono Cross.

While I like the in game low resolution characters in Chrono Trigger I am not a fan of the Dragon Ball/Chrono Trigger illustration character designs at all. I love the design in Chrono Cross though. While I don't mind Tetsuya Nomura's stuff, I agree that it doesn't suit Chrono Trigger.

hmm i already have this on the ps1 but depending on what new features they ad i may pick it up. the portableness isnt totally a selling factor for me either because i have a psp so i can do teh whole wireless play the disc thing. I really only use portables at school anymore in which case there's a wireless access point every like 2 ft, hooray for technology!

Hm.. dunno if anyone mentioned this, but if you have your sound on, the sound effect that plays is the Chrono Trigger 'clock' sound from the title screen. Yeah, that pretty much seals it.

I just finished a run through of Chrono Trigger a few days ago. It has mostly aged well - the story, pacing, and structure are what make it a remarkable game. But the fighting is really really tedious and simple. They're bound to be changing things, so they might as well change that.

Also, CT has been talked up so much that people who have never touched it who play a direct port to the DS are bound to be disappointed.

Trigger was the grand slam.
Cross was the inside the park home run.
