Jade's Next Game - I Am Alive
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:40 AM on July 11, 2008
So what's Ubisoft's Jade Raymond been working on since Assassin's Creed has come and gone? According to Gamekyo (formerly Jeuxfrance) she's been getting busy on I Am Alive, a survival game for the PC, 360, and PS3 from French developer Darkworks of Cold Fear fame and Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare infamy. Supposedly to be revealed at E3 next week in a lengthy video presentation, I Am Alive is a tale of survival following an earthquake that decimates Chicago. While the game will be a first-person affair, don't expect to be shouldering a bazooka. The point of view is meant to immerse you in the experience, similar to what EA is doing with Mirror's Edge.
It's not quite official confirmation, but Gamekyo has the trademark document for the game over at their site, so there's a pretty good chance this is a solid rumour. Still, even a solid rumour is still a rumour. The only thing that really strikes me as odd about the whole thing is I known people from Chicago, and no piddling city-destroying earthquake could take them down.

@zegota:
Oh, my god! That's... that's pretty terrible.
Did she actually know anything about the game? My assumption was always that if she was involved with the game then she knew what she was doing and that she was qualified and capable.
I'm still assuming that impression is correct, but it looks as though there seems to be some people who feel that the only reason she was hired is because she's hot and because the extra publicity for having a really sexy, attractive woman publicising a game is merely a publicity stunt designed to attract lonely geek boys.
As sensitive as I am to gender issues, occasionaly I miss one.

I thought Assassins Creed was great.
In any case, it's funny how Jade is too pretty for her own good. Maybe she should put on a few pounds, stop wearing makeup and maybe shave her head or something, then maybe she'll be taken seriously as a game developer.
I'm really conflicted when it comes to her and the whole Jade's game thing.
One part of me thinks we should all bow our heads in shame for making the game industry place full of pathetic lonely trolls, where a pretty girl can never be taken seriously as anything but a hawt piece of ass. We're all really just shooting ourselves and the industry in the foot.
While the other part can only think "Goddamn she's hawt!" /drool ^_^
...and then I bow my head in shame again.

What a shame. The game sounds interesting, but I'm sure in the future we'll see more things like "JADE IS MAKING THIS GAME, HERE ARE PICTURES OF HER, WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHAT ABOUT THE GAME A GIRL IS MAKING IT YOU MUST BUY IT" and less of "Hey, here's what this game is about, check out these screenshots and whatnot."

Wow... I hope she can get lucky again and find a programmer that can do something cool. Then she can design the most mediocre game around said coolness... and it'll sale.
And I'll be left here, not playing her shitty games.
Seriously, I can't even convince myself (and yes, I try) to get Assassin's Creed for $17. Just everything is so mediocre, repetitive and unimaginative.
I swear, anyone over the age of 10 could play AC and come up with some legitimate, yet simple solutions to make that game better.
Really, only the ability to climb/grab everything and the natural interaction he had with his surroundings was impressive. And it's only impressive on the technical side of things.
It was horrible design that took those things and made me completely uninterested in them. Which is a shame. Must suck being an incredible programmer, while everyone else using it to design a lackluster game.

The sad story is, I enjoy Dynasty Warriors, which is as monotonous as you can get, but Assasins Creed still bored me to tears.

This topic is even worse than racism in the way it inspires reaction. I didn't love Assassin's Creed, and was in fact a little let down by it, but that's no different than any other game. I've been let down by games from loads of great designers and producers. Jade's a woman, and she's no different from any other producer. Give her the same respect you'd give to Cliff, or to Miyamoto, or to the guy making the next crap PSP title for Crave. It also takes a smart person to learn from past mistakes and attempt to do better in their next endeavours. There seems to be a few misconceptions about the role of the producer in videogames, notably at Ubi. I can't get into it too much (NDA and whatnot) but let's just say that the producer does as much work as any other team lead - they just handle the organising, hiring, coordinating side of things.

Yeah the first thing that came to mind was Disaster Report (aka SOS). Incredibly clunky game in ways but a really cool concept that managed to trump it's execution.
It would be neat if games with a survival premise like this could be laced with actual survival techniques that go a bit deeper than 'if you fall, you die' or 'stay in water too long, you drown'. Games like Disaster Report had you drinking water to keep your health bar from draining and with Raw Danger keeping your body heat at a healthy level by huddling near heat sources.
It would be a compelling counter-arguement for videogames being a waste of time. Games that can provide all the fun, spectacle, and compelling narrative of a AAA title but teach core concepts that can be applied to real life survival situations is a merger of entertainment and edutainment that could probably get positive press similar to Brain Age.
Not that this game will necessarily be any of that, but having games that people can relate to aspects of their lives in a universal sense seems like an incredibly untapped market.

@Proto_Man: What do you mean, big deal about her? That people are reporting on her like this? Well, I think most game directors or producers or whatever are talked about when their new game is announced - for example Kojima, Jaffe, Molyneux. Also, there was this thing about Assassin's Creed that promised so much and delivered so little (although I still liked what it did).
I don't hate her game and I don't hate her, the only thing I hate is that she talked so much about this game and built hype and in the end it was NOTHING like anybody expected (in a bad way). Lame combat, missions as repetitive as it gets, and the open world was pointless because you couldn't do anything. In a nutshell, the game was a linear, story-driven game but in an open world. The way it should have been is either have loads of side missions that are interesting and some more interior levels, a bit like Mass Effect actually, or, don't give us an open world and just make it a level-to-level experience.
Just my two cents. And why I am going to stay away from whatever games she makes in the future is quite frankly because I don't think she's good at what she does. She couldn't pull off Assassin's and that's why she's mediocre in my book.
That doesn't mean she shouldn't get attention or anything, so I think people can talk about her for whatever reason all day long. She just doesn't stand for good games like Kojima does. :)

I was born in Chicago, and I refuse to believe Mayor Daily will let anything ruin the city. He even loaded up all of the homeless people on buses and shipped them to other cities in Illinois. No joke. He's crazy like that, but that's just the way things work in Chicago.
I refuse to let Jade Raymond -- pretty as she is -- ruin my home town. And especially not for the sake of repetitive missions featuring eavesdropping, pickpocketing and flag grabbing. No Ma'm. I'm telling Mayor Daily on you. There's going to be a bus with your name on it Jade!

Would it have been weird to lead with the Cold Fear or Alone in the Dark thing instead of a picture of Jade? I mean... they've been working on this new game for three years now, and presumably Jade got parachuted in after AC - so about six months back. Why is she immediately getting all the credit?

@SicariusIV: Well, you're right, but it's actually different pretty much everywhere you work.
Producers are managers, but they're knowledgeable managers that usually have final say as to what makes it into the game. They're also the ones that have to appease publishers and do all the business-side of things for the team.
And if they're really doing their job, they play and play and play and play their games and help the team improve the experience... since most designers, programmers and artists don't have the time to sit and play through EVERYONE's levels and stuff.
...
Of course, there are also places where Producers don't do a God damned thing aside from talk to publishers on the phone, while assigning out everything else.

More on topic, this new game doesn't sound promising, at least not initially. I was excited for AC and I did enjoy it.. enough so to play it through 3 times almost back-to-back-to-back to get all 1000 achievement points. I do think Jade overhyped AC, and I can see why some people were disappointed, but it still wasn't a bad game. (though other people are more deserving of praise than Jade, for the demographic who enjoyed AC)
And yeah, she's mesmerizingly beautiful... even though there are a ton of other women who are that attractive or more, Jade, and her hot stripper name, are well above anything I'm ever hooking up with. I would imagine the same is true for many others, and honestly, I don't see the harm in comments indicating as much.

@argh: Dude. Resident Evil 4.
Not stressful thanks to good controls. Still, the first few hours are scary as hell until you get used to the game.
The problem with most survival horror games is poorly implemented control or design schemes. Often these are defended by fans with the reasoning that, 'It adds to the terror.' And yes, it's terrifying to have some asshole lumbering after you with any number of bodily destruction implements when you can't do anything but run into walls and struggle with the combat mechanics - but it's just an easy excuse for poor design.
RE4 remedies all this. Still waiting for more developers to catch onto creating a solid design scheme and building the survival experience around that...
Hopefully this one works with that in mind.

No, you're definitely not the only one. Even sadder is the fact that many of these people don't actually know that a producer isn't the one calling all the shots on a game. It's likely they have very little creative influence over a game, and do very little of the nitty gritty development work. Their job typically has more to do with managing schedules between different departments and making sure the game gets out the door. That being said, this is not her game. She is not the creative director, nor the person that came up with the initial idea for the game. She likely hasn't even written a design document. It would be like going nuts over "Hamilton Chu's Halo." Very few games these days are the products of a singular mind. They are the result of a team, or teams, collaborating to form the final project. Some games are clearly assosciated with certain designers, like Metal Gear, or Super Mario, but even those involve a huge team undertaking with many different people adding their ideas.
That being said, Jade had little to do with the overall quality of Assassin's Creed. She is neither responsible nor to blame for it. She's just a poor pretty face that Ubisoft seems to like to exploit to sell their games, and it's unfortunate that her career is marred by rabid fanboyism.

Back on topic AC was a good game. Not great but definitely worth a play through. So lets see what she can do for game number 2 as producer. Sounds like this one's gonna be like the Wii disaster game.(are they even making that anymore?) Hopefully will see something next week.
And for those saying she's just a producer and not really involved, that's like saying Kojima really isn't a part of the Metal Gear series, or Inaba isn't a part of Okami. Give the girl some credit. She didn't make the game by herself obviously but she pulled everything together which is the job of any producer. So stop hatin. \rant

Most of the comments here break down into either Jade is hot, AC sucked, or AC sucked because...she's hot? That one is a bit weird.
AC looked cool beforehand, before they had an attractive woman telling me about it. It wasn't quite as good as sold, but it did pretty much do what it said it would. We just didnt know about the repetition.
Seems her looks are both a plus and a minus. Can't a pretty young woman work in the gaming field and not become an oogle object? Jade is attractive, as many women are, regardless of the field. But Jebus Cripes...tact, gentlemen-look it up.
Give her credit, though, she IS a good saleswoman. I was curious on AC and her enthusiasm added to it. NOT her looks.
Then again, how long has Morgan Webb dealt with that "OMG...A GIRL GAMER WHO'S ALSO HOT!!!" Its not rare, fellas. Not outside the basement, anyway. Go outside sometime.

Quite a lot of attention for a producer. Granted she is really hot. But its not like she has a huge say in how the game actually turns out - that's what the creative director does. Also any of you complaining about how you didn't like Assassins Creed, that blame goes to Patrice not Jade. Producers in the gaming biz are there to make sure the developers are happy(programmers, artists, designers), and doing the other things no one else wants to do like deal with sony, microsoft, or nintendo. Yeah she did hype the crap out of the game, but that's part of her job too. She's not going to say the game sucks, that'll get a person fired.

Additionally, they're the ones that work out the deals... they're the ones responsible to get more time for a project to make it better... to keep things on track.
You're right, she probably didn't fully design anything... but she OKAY'D every step of it.

I was actually thinking being this so-called "sexist"
actually offends more men than women, funny old world.
And anyway to the two complainers... Kotaku has way more vulgarity and "inappropriate" content than what is in this thread.
Infact I say it's what makes Kotaku popular. The term "maximum risky" anyone?
A search on Kotaku revealing 188 results on the subject of "breasts" with words like "jubblies".
Or 100 results connected to the word "penis"?
94 results of "maximum risky" with titles like "Iroha Ravaged" or "SMBB Brawl Peach and Zelda upskirts."
Kotaku is better than the rest because it is the only video game news site that loves to informs us on the open sexual freedom of Japan. After using Kotaku's search engine it seems that some of us are in the minor leagues of "inappropriate" when compared to Kotaku.
Until Kotaku cleans up it's act. I'm certainly not going to. And when it does it will be a sad day.

Unfortunately, someone forget to lock your cages this morning, or something.
This article is about Jade Raymond the game developer. She is a woman, and some people think she is attractive. And that's all anyone should say about that. Frankly, I'm sick and tired of having to read shit like this when I want to actually be informed of something, or parse through someone's comments or opinions, be they insightful or witty.
I understand the conversational nature of this blog, I realize that many stories are posted with "suggestive" material, and I recognize an attempt at humor and playfulness. But this shit is crossing the line. What line? The one of grace, class, and decency.
Perhaps some of you haven't reached the real world yet, and realize that you must treat others with respect, but when you do I imagine you'll change your tune to something akin to mine...either that or remain forever compared to a 12-year old.
Every time we have a story even remotely suggestive we get the morons crawling out of the woodwork...be it racism, sexism, ignorance, antipathy, relgious persecution, anti-country propaganda (pick your nation, they all get hate equally), xenophobia or just plain indecency.
Think about what you write before you write it. Think long and hard. And for the love of god, if you're wrong and you know it, don't try to justify your position under some ignorant title like "everyone else is doing it!" or "freedom of speech!" or "this isn't even the worst thing that has happened on this blog!" or whatever else you may dredge out of the black hole you call a mind.
There is no call for this behavior in any social setting. Anyone calling themselves educated should know to avoid this kind of junk, and certainly how to deal with it. Usually the best way is to ignore it and let the trolls deal with themselves, but I've had enough of it. Why? Because this pollution you call comments is messing up my favorite site. I didn't come here to read what you think about Jade Raymond and why you want to date her. I came here for some humor and information and gossip about video games. If you want to talk shit, go to 4chan or gamefaqs.
I'm spologize to everyone that's been acting normal through this; you shouldn't be subjected to this comment as much as you shouldn't have to read thiers'. But something needs said, and something needs done.
I'll get off my soapbox now. Keep it clean and keep it civil, please, or don't bother.

@Spoony Bard: Oh no Spoony, of course girls LOVE random guys on gaming sites talking about splooging on their face. Didn't you know? Why, me and the other girls absolutely adore when they do that. Oh, today isn't sarcasm day? Crap.

@damienchowder: You're just... well, we'll be better off without you. Yes, Kotaku writes about breasts, and games with breasts, and about penises, and we have the Kotaku fish. But that doesn't make it appropriate to talk about jerking off onto someone's face. Not a hypothetical person. Not your fantasy. This is a real woman, a woman who (God, unfortunately for her) has a job where she has to deal with idiot gamers like you. The existence of sexual content on this site, whatever the nature of that content, does not give you a free run of the place to talk about people like that. That conversation is fine for your house, your bathroom, hanging out with your buddies, whatever. But it will get you banned, here. I'd expect your name has already been submitted, many times, because of your comments in this thread. While words can't hurt people, the inappropriate and demeaning way you're wielding them can. Take that childish bullshit to 4CH or GAF. But whatever you do, keep it the fuck out of Kotaku.

@damienchowder: This is very sexist and misogynistic, where is the Witz man at?
I personally thought that Jade Raymond was used as a pretty face to market the game and sell it, since it usually isn't a woman promoting a game. Let's face it, it would mostly be men who would play Assasin's Creed, and Jade helped make it appeal to them more. I can't fault her for doing what Ubisoft or what was needed to sell the game, but I avoided it. Maybe this new game will be a better effort.

@Pete193: Actually no, most of us just have a problem with stupid comments. I'm one of them, but I in no way want the banhammer. I'm much too mature and enlightened to be in that position of power. Stop trying to shine the light away from your stupid and unnecessary comment. You are the problem. I don't come to kotaku to read how people want to splooge some girl in the face and I don't care about your personal sexual desires. Go to fleshbot to talk about that crap.

@Cchrist:
Well, it is sad that 2008 seems to be the year of the asshat here at Kotaku. I swear I've never seen so many new members who are just absolutely screwed up. It seems that most of the people from 2007 and before are the more sensible and respectful people here. Maybe it's because Kotaku is popular now, and that brings in all the "cool kids" these days, those that feel the need to be sexist, racist, misogynistic, ignorant, ect ....
One thing is for sure, we need more people holding the banhammer around here these days if most of the comment sections are going to be like this.
