@CHU BOI: A little optimistic there for Sony aren't you. I think it's WAY too early to call it yet. Let's see how the FF13 multi platform announcement impacts console sales. I wouldn't be surprised if a fair few gamers buy the 360 instead of the PS3 simply because the 360 "has it too" from now on and it's quite a bit lower in price. The PS3 is still priced too high even if it *appears* competitive thanks to MGS4.

But the REAL blockbuster "showdown" if you so want will be when FF13 launches. That will be the most epic sales battle ever, lol. Will it push more 360s or PS3s? What would it have looked like if it was exclusive? What if it came out in Japan on 360? What if Versus was multi platform as well? So many interesting things to consider. It will be an analyst's nightmare.

I have people on my LIVE friends list who have sold their PS3s before, and some have even sold their 360's. If it wasn't for hope of more Nintendo 1st party games, I would have already sold my Wii. I remember in 2000, Sega showed 80 games and everybody agreed that they had "won" E3. 10 months later, they were out of the console business.

This is good to see for Sony. If that can pull this off in a post-MGS4 launch month that's before the holiday then I will be impressed. It seems as though Microsoft has already sold close to the majority of its target demographic (me included) while not being as much of a hit to the non-hardcore crowd as its competitors. MGS4 aside, the PS3 is gaining a few thousand units as being a Blu-ray player, while Wii...is the devil, as we all know. With that, I see them moving at exactly the same pace (170-220K ish) until the holiday season...or whenever Rock Band 2 hits. MS needs to fix something.

Well, of course PS3 was going to get a large bump in sales due to MGSIV. There hasn't been a really high-quality 360 title since GTAIV, and that sold more 360s than PS3s. I think the holiday season sales are going to be a lot more indicative of the future.

I've got hundreds of hours played on my 360's and Resistance, UT3, and MGS4 were played for an approx. 2 hours...combined.

I feel the new generation will have to be an evolution in totally new area. Graphics wise, current systems can support all the expensive HDTVs. I feel this generation will last longer for xbox 360 and PS3. Well, Xbox 360 should add blu ray. Otherwise, I dont see next gen at least till 2012.

If only sony will make more of those 80gb MGS4 bundle, I know my friend is going to buy one this week, and another one of my friend is thinking about it. So if anything, I think the PS3 is definitely will survive even after the whole FFXIII thing.

This is my view on the PS3. It will probably be like the PS2 sales wise. But you have to remember, having a 10 year system shows it's age. I think PS3 will be a 10 year system, but honestly after 5-6 years I think I'm ready for a new system. Something with new technology. Any system after 5-6 years starts to show it's age. PS2 is still selling, but man the games just look so old, lol.

My question is this: We know Microsoft will come out with a new system shorlty, obviously before Sony will. Who is going to compete with the new Xbox? Do you think Wii2 will be out? Will Mac step up (how interesting will that be?) Give me your opinion guys. Aren't we bound to see a new Xbox within a couple of years?

Like I said in my previous post about a similar topic, the game companies knows that software sales will always be more important than the hardware sales in terms of generating the long term revenue. Personally, I can bet that both Xbox 360 and PS3 have far greater games per console ratio than the Wii.

There were some drops to 180k this year but also some rises to 560k last year. You're making stuff up now. I think 220k is an increase from last month by like 50k (don't quote me on it).

With the price of the 360 coming down to Wii levels, I can definitely see many of them jumping over to the 360. @Toasticus: You have a very good statement. I agree with you 100 percent. I thought both systems had a horrible BC system, like you stated. But maybe next generation we will see the companies support BC more because of the popularity of this generation of games.

Also, another thing I would like to see next generation would be cross platform multilayer. Why can't we play Call of Duty 4 against PS3/Xbox 360 players? How does playing against another console effect sales? I'm sure it would be hard to get servers working right and responding to each other on both ends. But surely it can be figured out. Why does it have to be a full out war? Why can't two companies get together and just support gamers as gamers? This is something I would very much like to see in next generation. And I don't mean just Xbox 360 and PC players playing together, I mean Xbox 360 and PS3 (or Xbox 720 and PS4). thoughts?

A quick note to the MS fanboyos on this page: increased competition from your hated PS3 is good for the 360. Why, you ask? Simple, my friend: it makes MS work harder. Do you think they would have busted their asses paying R* $50 mil for GTA4 and SqEnix $?? (huge money) for FFXIII if they were blowing the PS3 away? No, because they would have no need to.
Stated simply, you have the PS3's success to thank for GTA4 and FFXIII day and date with the PS3 versions. (Not to mention higher quality games generally, a revamp of their warranty coverage, etc etc etc).

Anyone who is good in computer architecture, will realize that Cell processors can be put in parallel to get more power. I will not be surprised if the next gen PS will have 2-4 cells which will ensure proper BC to PS3 games. PS2 architecture was considered to be very unique which is why its emulation is kinda difficult.

@papero3: It would be. I really think that when a company pushes something new out, that they should push it hard and make it WORTH to upgrade. I'm not a fan of holding on to something for so long. I thought the Xbox got dropped at a good time. As for the PS2, I understand it's getting alot of sales, but you really need to push the PS2ers to a PS3. I thought Microsoft did well with that.

I agree with you though, having 6 systems on the market will be a wrong move. Which is why we might not see new systems in quite some time. This generation has been different. Video games have become 'ok' in todays world now. Which means more people.

@macr0planet: I think the exorbitant costs of launching a new system, and the rough patches that the PS3 and 360 went through at first, might stave off Sony and Microsoft's eagerness to beat each other to the punch this time around. Microsoft probably has more motivation to be the first around again though due to the lack of Blu-Ray support. Though if they release something early, they better have absolutely flawless BC to fend off the upgrade-weariness we've seen this generation.

The way BC has been badly mishandled by two of the big three has been pretty disheartening for me, especially considering the largely untapped potential for future generations to play last-generation games at higher resolutions and smoother framerates. If an Xbox 1080 or PS4 that played 360/PS3 games at twice the framerate and 8xAA debuted next year, I don't think there would be much groaning over short life cycles at all. I also think that standard BC is really just necessary for veneration of games as an art form. You don't have to buy a TV from 1980 to watch a movie from 1980, after all.

Considering GTA4 was released right at the end of April, adding the April and May NPD figures together(for hardware sold in the month leading up and the month following the release) the PS3 sold around 20 000 more units in that period. Unless you're just going by the April numbers alone, then year, 360 sold less than 1000 more, but May's numbers are just as relevant. Software is another story, of course.

Just wait for fall. 360 has a lot coming out for fall and winter. I'm already planning on getting Fallout 3, Rockband 2, and maybe Gears 2. Going to be plenty busy this winter.

It's a shame that Ninja Gaiden wasn't more like the AAA title it was on the xbox. Not sure if it would move systems, but regardless the title isn't the revelation that its predecessor was. It launched just before MGS4 as an exclusive but didn't have the same effect for Microsoft as Metal Gear did for Sony.

With dedicated 7 cores, one can dedicate each core to excellent physics, great sound, enemy AI and finally, overall a great gaming experience.
Xbox 360 was designed for excellent graphics which it does, period. But when it comes to physics, PS3 will outscore it.
As long as we multiplatform games, we cannot know this. Just wait for PS3 exclusives to pour, then we will be able to appreciate the Ken of Kutaragi.

Little Big Planet, Heavenly sword, and maybe resistance and Ratchet and Clank. I would one day hope to get a PS3, I'm sure that day will come. I mean, they've lowered so much in price in only 2 years, what will they cost 2 more years down the road?

Good ps3 news, it looks like MGS did move some consoles finally; ps3 finally cracked the 300k/month sold outside of the Xmas season.

For the 360? A sliver of good news... 360 finally sold more than 200k consoles a month. Maybe the price cut will help in July, maybe the E3 announcements will boost sales as well. But that's a lot of maybes. We'll have to see if the ps3 can maintain it's momentum or if the 360 can finally get some back.

Obviously the PS3 got a spike in sales from Metal Gear Solid. That's a game people have been waiting for for awhile. Don't expect that rate to stay at what it is. I've heard plenty of people say "The PS3 will be worth it when Metal Gear Solid comes out" but I've heard like nobody I know say that for other games like Killzone 2.

And lol @ people bashing MS for getting FFXIII on the 360. Even if they did pay Squenix money that's business. What do you expect MS to do? Roll over and let the PS3 step on them? Seriously stfu. If you're gonna bash MS at least do so in a manner that doesn't make you sound like a raving prick.

The PS3 is finally gaining some steam. Good for it. Doesn't mean it'll beat the 360. And I don't really care if it does. Most games are multi-plat now anyways.

@nerdBOY01: Yeah. And if we think about it, graphic really have not taken off that much since the release of x360 and ps3. I mean, yes we have Crysis, but it's not like LEAPS and BOUNDS over what we have.

I don't think graphics can get much better, but physically they could. Meaning, we still have not mastered physics. How about wind? Can we get more leaves physics in games. How about real time damage, like scarring. Footprints that stay, better snow/rain. There are a bunch of things we need to hit on besides graphics. I guess since you put it that way though, I would like to see a new system around 2011ish. That is 3 years away, which is a lot of technology advancement.

am I the only one here who thinks that final fantasy isn't a big power house? it will move units but it wont significantly improve or reduce the sale of any specific console. people said the same thing about GTA 4 and look how that turn out. I don't know. I long for the day we could all have one console, but then what would drive that console to do better? It would have no competition, which would be bad. I guess the really nice thing about PC games is that you don't have to worry about things like these because there is only 1 kind of PC, in a sense.

@CHU BOI: Yep. To be frank, White Knight Chronicles can't come soon enough (both for Sony and for me, I'm psyched). It has the potential to be "AAA" on arrival but it really, really needs to come out. Kinda like...uh...Home. Except Home isn't a game and..."AAA". You get the idea.

At least Sony has Versus as of now and personally I'm looking forward to it just as much as to FF13 although it's not treated with the same popularity. I totally dig the art style. Heck it might even be a better game to me, but I'm no JRPG expert anyhow (I even liked Enchanted Arms).

By the way, Squeenix have announced that at their invite only event, fans will be shocked by an (all new) announcement, in context with FF7. Let's see what that brings.

@macr0planet: Unfortunately, I would say that the legal and business complications of cross-platform play far outweigh the technical issues. How would they handle a PS3 player who wants to report a 360 player for bad behavior, for example? And from a business standpoint, cross-platform play is a no-gains feature because it benefits your primary competitor as much as it does yourself. Of course, it would be pretty funny to see Microsoft and Sony try to team up against Nintendo in that small way.

The only reason we've seen what little PC-vs-console online play we have is because PC gaming is a generally unregulated market that no single manufacturer is backing, which greatly reduces the conflict of interests.

Then again, potentially a third-party developer could get such a cross-platform system working and ask both Sony and MS for permission to put it in the game, with the promise that they'll announce to the whole world whichever side didn't want to play ball. It'd have to be a pretty ballsy third party, though. Maybe Infinity Ward or Rockstar could pull it off.

Joking aside, what do you folk think your bickering and arguing is going to do or accomplish? You aren't going to get anyone to admit they're wrong, it hardly happens in real life, and is theoretically impossible for someone to admit they're wrong when they have anonymity on their side. (ie; hiding behind a keyboard as they speak bias opinions)

I love kotaku for getting news I wouldn't see normally on other sites, and seeing how a well connected and caring community responds to that news, because I like knowing what my fellow gamers think of recent events in gaming. However this community is really changing in a negative direction. There was the ridiculously stupid comments about Jade Raymond, or stupid comments on E3 live blogging, and the Fanboy Wars are just getting out of hand. I remember when numbers could be released and we could respond reasonably well with thought on why they are, and in what direction the sales are going.

I honestly promised myself that I'd never write one of these "You guys are being children and I am an articulate and intelligent person for writing this" comments, but I just don't like seeing that flaming is becoming an acceptable habit when it never was supposed to be in the first place.

TL;DR : I wish people here would stop bicker like before.

@deathtastic: Indeed. I love a big calibre JRPG like FF but the PS3 currently has none. As I'm no JRPG "nut" I view the decent, but not stellar JRPGs on PS3 or 360 for that matter with a "Kinda cool...Not sure" look on my face. For instance Eternal Sonata, Valkyria Chronicles or even Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery. I'm just not convinced they play in the same league if you know what I mean. Final Fantasy is needed and soon.

I do hope that JRGPs like the ones I mentioned do well enough though. They sure are awesome for real fans who need a fix during the seemingly endless Final Fantasy "breaks".
